@howardb02 I know! There is an official "Best Of" collection out there, but trust me, they only skimmed the surface. But I bought it for the video quality anyhow. Recommended!
@deanhamilton He probably meant to mention Kipling and forgot. Dennis was high as a kite at this period of his life. Considering how wrecked he almost certainly was, I thought it was a valiant performance.
@deanhamilton do me a favor and shut up... please please please shut the hell up for crying out loud!!!! just enjoy the piece why dont you you ungrateful, unappreciative hypocrite. shut up. ...
@iceburgrecords Kipling was born in Bombay, so does that make him an Indian, Englishman of the The British Empire, or just British-Indian. It gets confusing these days.
@ysfaljanabi How is this awkward? He breathes between the lines. He breaks in rhythm and emphasizes downwards towards the end of each spoken phrase. It picks up tempo towards the end as the lines become shorter. I think it is a great, although not brilliant, recitation.
Poetry on TV - wow. What a concept. Dennis had the heat and violence of a poet's heart but he held it with real grace. He will be missed but I'm so glad we had him for 7+ decades. RIP Dennis.
the world has lost a tremendous man, actor, and a true talent, yes the rebel of film that will always be remember. This performance right here is why I got interested in literature, thank you Mr. Hopper for all the great memories may you rest in peace. NO one today could or would be compared to such a man as dennis hopper or any other from his generation of great actors IMO take care all
Though we knew it would happen,it's hard to believe he's gone.But he left us with great art as actor,director,photographer,and artist that we can continue to enjoy. and though he dealt with obstacles (some self-created) as we all do,he faded, overcame them,and returned stronger as some of us also do. Whether it be his fantastic portrayal of Frank Booth in Blue Velvet,his photos like Double Standard,or the way he could say "man" better than anyone,he will always be appreciated by bums like me.
Very wise poem and Dennis obviously understood it and felt it because he did a great job reciting it. Good men are leaving the Earth. Is it all because of The End? I guess so. R.I.P. Dennis
It says in the description..."DENNIS HOPPER READS...". There was absolutely no reading there whatsover...that was recited, by heart. Hopper was awesome.
it's funny how the "left" are often more Biblical than the "right", even if they don't recognize it as such. Don't know how many of you noticed, but that was nearly a check off list of recommendations out of the Bible, including paraphrases from Jesus.
if is the middle word in life If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, dont deal in lies, Or being hated, dont give way to hating...
Just saw Dennis this morning when he finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (It's near the Egyptian theater if you ever want to check it out). Physically he's not looking too good,but you could tell his spirits were high at his being honored after 55+ years on the Hollywood trail. I only discovered this clip yesterday,and I'm loving it immensely. It shows how the real man could really emote a serious poem compared to the one he read on Petticoat Junction as the butt of a joke.
Brilliant. I've never experienced those words like this before. Furthers my belief in the oral interpretation of literature as a means of better understanding it. Love his little alteration on the last line, too! Thanks so much for posting, abargle!

ohne nur ein einz'ges Wort darüber zu verlieren;

Wenn alle mit dir rechnen, aber nicht immer jedermann;
