  • WOW!

  • @howardb02 I know! There is an official "Best Of" collection out there, but trust me, they only skimmed the surface. But I bought it for the video quality anyhow. Recommended!

  • Johnny cash had a show????

  • daringly beautiful

  • England will be playing 4, 4 fucking 2

  • RIP dude...

  • The way light reverberates in his silver blue eyes makes his look like a prophet. Incredible.

  • what did johhny say to him at the end that made him snigger??

  • IF I CAN DIE CLEAN AND SOBER ALL MY IFS WILL HAVE COME TRUE

  • Good on you Dennis.

  • i remember he recited part of this in apocalypse now

  • Thank you for uploading this, the proof that all great men meet at one point or another, in this world or the next.

  • @deanhamilton He probably meant to mention Kipling and forgot. Dennis was high as a kite at this period of his life. Considering how wrecked he almost certainly was, I thought it was a valiant performance.

  • @abargle

He says it was a poem by an Englishman, he didn't indicate it was his.

  • @deanhamilton He clearly says "It's an Englishman wrote it"..... he does assume that you know the poem and the poet.

  • @deanhamilton do me a favor and shut up... please please please shut the hell up for crying out loud!!!! just enjoy the piece why dont you you ungrateful, unappreciative hypocrite. shut up. ...

    'applause '

    thank you, thank you :)

  • @deanhamilton This was 1970. The general public was more literate then. Everyone knew he was acting and that he didn't write it.

  • @deanhamilton

0:13 "An Englishman wrote it." relax.

  • @iceburgrecords Kipling was born in Bombay, so does that make him an Indian, Englishman of the The British Empire, or just British-Indian. It gets confusing these days.

  • @deanhamilton He said it was by a britishman in the very begenning of the clip.

  • @deanhamilton No he did NOT act like he wrote it. He says at the beginning that an Englishman wrote it. Does Dennis look like English to you bitch?

  • @deanhamilton youbrainlessfuck eveyoneknoswhowrot it cept yerdumphuk ass

  • @thoostorm4 calm down, son.

  • @ysfaljanabi How is this awkward? He breathes between the lines. He breaks in rhythm and emphasizes downwards towards the end of each spoken phrase. It picks up tempo towards the end as the lines become shorter. I think it is a great, although not brilliant, recitation.

  • @ysfaljanabi He did miss a large chunk of the poem.

  • wow, its like instead of double talking, its twice the sense..

  • The two ppl who dislike this suck

  • .......AND YOU TOOK THE LOAD RITE OFF ME!!!!

  • here here

  • :D

  • great guys

  • its so fuck beautiful

  • @BigDuke921

    R Kipling is the poet.

  • start again at your beginnings

never breath a word about your loss

  • INSPIRATIONAL YET TRUTHFUL. THE WORDS OF A HERO AND WORDS I PERSONALLY ABIDE BY ALSO.

  • Bravo, Dennis! Excellent recitation! You will be missed.

  • did johnny call him david at the end??

  • The finest poem; orated magnificently; asking the eternal question - what is a man? Magnificent.

  • @themassofmen Yeah, great to watch and listen to.

  • Cant stop watching it over and over...

    Really good stuf !!

  • ACE

  • Dennis Hopper,Johnny Cash and Rudyard Kipling. This is distilled quality.

  • you're a man my son

  • Incredible.

  • Dennis Hooper-the world lost a great icon and spirit. Rip Mr. Hooper. awesome tv right here in my opinion

  • This is a jewel!

  • missed a line Denny!!"if you can wait and not be tired by waiting"!! never mind rest in peace mate!

    ohne nur ein einz'ges Wort darüber zu verlieren;

    Wenn alle mit dir rechnen, aber nicht immer jedermann;

  • WOW.... great poem, great men... r.i.p.

  • So long rider...

  • what a life is there a book?

  • It is good, but he is reading off a card

  • Wow.

  • Great Hopper on Johnny Cash show!!

  • classic a young dennis hopper.

  • We need more of this

  • Hate to be a downer, but he left out a line.

  • does it have subtitles please?

  • IF by Rudyard Kipling

  • I will miss him. His movies got me through my roughest, darkest times.

  • Yes, I will be a man. Thanks, Dennis. RIP.

  • Rest in Peace Mr Hopper

  • Poetry on TV - wow. What a concept. Dennis had the heat and violence of a poet's heart but he held it with real grace. He will be missed but I'm so glad we had him for 7+ decades. RIP Dennis.

  • Didnt realize Dennis died... I dont think he was that old...

  • A pair of rebels with causes. They're both missed.

  • The Englishman was Rudyard Kipling.

  • Top Actor will be sadly missed

  • Je t'aime, Dennis

  • love Dennis Hopper R.I.P.

  • The King Is Dead....Long Live The King!

    theElf

  • Rest in Peace. There's a new poet in the kingdom today.

  • the world has lost a tremendous man, actor, and a true talent, yes the rebel of film that will always be remember. This performance right here is why I got interested in literature, thank you Mr. Hopper for all the great memories may you rest in peace. NO one today could or would be compared to such a man as dennis hopper or any other from his generation of great actors IMO take care all

  • Though we knew it would happen,it's hard to believe he's gone. But he left us with great art as actor, director, photographer, and artist that we can continue to enjoy. and though he dealt with obstacles (some self-created) as we all do,he faded, overcame them, and returned stronger as some of us also do. Whether it be his fantastic portrayal of Frank Booth in Blue Velvet, his photos like Double Standard,or the way he could say "man" better than anyone,he will always be appreciated by bums like me.

  • Dennis Hopper. Amazing dude.

  • Very wise poem and Dennis obviously understood it and felt it because he did a great job reciting it. Good men are leaving the Earth. Is it all because of The End? I guess so. R.I.P. Dennis

  • just fantastic! it just proves that Dennis Hopper was a multi-faceted, versatile artist!

  • RIP

  • R.I.P. Dennis.

  • Fantastic! Cash and Hopper on the same stage...WOW! They don't make fellas like that anymore.

R.I.P., Mr. Hopper and Mr. Cash. We'll miss ya.

  • thanks. RIP.

  • This poem was actually written by Rudyard Kipling (author of The Jungle Book) to his son. But Hopper does it proper justice! RIP!

  • It says in the description..."DENNIS HOPPER READS...". There was absolutely no reading there whatsover...that was recited, by heart. Hopper was awesome.

  • "'I tell you,' he cried, 'this man has enlarged my mind.'"

  • great poem. RIP D-Hopp.

  • ...if

  • @indiesixtynine very well said! we'll be leaving in a better place, indeed.

  • R.I.P. Dennis hopper (1936-2010). dead, but not forgotten.

  • Owen Wilson shuold play him on a trubute movie... R.I.P., Dennis.

  • @lzsmn I always thought that they should have played father and son in a film. Too late now.

  • @qqrk1372 yeah, unfortunately...

  • @lzsmn Actually, when I first saw Owen in Cable Guy I thought it was Hopper's son.

  • @qqrk1372 in a certain way, they were alike... not only phisically, I mean.

  • @lzsmn Understood.

  • 2 REAL MEN!! Brilliant!

  • Damn Dennis, we loved you. R.I.P.

  • thank you for this man. makes it better for me to say goodbye to him...

  • RIP Dennis

  • RIP Dennis Hopper

  • The poem must have been an influence on his life...he even quoted a couple of lines from in it APOCALYPSE NOW.

  • Firstoff, he's a Republican. Secondly, why would the one guy give it a "thumbs down"? It's beautiful poetry.

  • or sowing season i mean

  • 144 to 201 were used by jesse lacey of the band brand new in the song jesus christ

  • it's funny how the "left" are often more Biblical than the "right", even if they don't recognize it as such. Don't know how many of you noticed, but that was nearly a check off list of recommendations out of the Bible, including paraphrases from Jesus.

  • I always liked Dennis Hopper .. now I like him even more.

  • if is the middle word in life If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, dont deal in lies, Or being hated, dont give way to hating...

     Rudyard Kipling

  • Just saw Dennis this morning when he finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (It's near the Egyptian theater if you ever want to check it out). Physically he's not looking too good, but you could tell his spirits were high at his being honored after 55+ years on the Hollywood trail. I only discovered this clip yesterday, and I'm loving it immensely. It shows how the real man could really emote a serious poem compared to the one he read on Petticoat Junction as the butt of a joke.

  • it's for Dean. This was 15 years after his death. A secret tribute.

  • TY TY TY so fkn cool seen hopper read this as an older gentelman on a german tv show but never seen the origanal..... TY

  • That was great, thank you!

  • He is a very sexy and talented man with beautiful deep eyes and terrific smile. Love you, Dennis!

  • That was good show,.

  • Dennis was a very sexy guy, then too.

The "mm (1:36)" and (2:09) "ahnn" were the best bits for me.

I never knew he had a nose like that.

  • Brilliant, thanks definemaybe for the share!!

  • rudyard kipling was an anit-semite.

  • oh well

  • so were lots of people

  • Kipling was an anti-theist not an anti-semite.

  • Brilliant. I've never experienced those words like this before. Furthers my belief in the oral interpretation of literature as a means of better understanding it. Love his little alteration on the last line, too! Thanks so much for posting, abargle!

  • Where?

  • Wise words,i love it.

  • The poem is called If By Rudyard Kipling. The complete version is extraordinary.Good to see Johnny have poetry read

on his show.A very good video.Thanx.

  • Good stuff. (When was the last time you heard a poem recited on TV??)

  • @akrlic All the time...

  • @akrlic Good point. I used to love "Def Poetry Jam" now it's gone. Now all we have is an endless array of personalities who've discovered that they can make a living pandering to an audience whose values lie in their prejudice and distrust of people who are not like them.

  • Awesome, it is so true what he spoke.
