  • i have no clue what this is about

i only clicked this because of the chick

  • Um dude just fyi, you can just use the pen tool select the character and alt back space to place a color mask onto the character :\

  • Do you do your line drawings on paper then scan them into the computer, or just drawing them in the editing software? And do you use photoshop?

  • so FZDschool is in Singapore? wow thats close, maybe an hour to two hour flight from my country

  • is there still hope for me ? im a older person so if i want to draw could i still become this good i knew person he start drawing from 6 years old hes now 16/17 or something he can draw as good as you do just curious if its still possible

  • Seems unlikely that I could actually help with this process, but at the start where you put a load of grey around the character and then rub out the excess bits, could you not use the magic wand and click on any area outside of the character, then right click and choose select inverse, then just use the paint bucket tool to fill in the area behind the character?

Seems this would save a lot of time if it works :P

Thumbs up if this works so they can see please :)

  • what if you liek both designing ideas like i like the thought of drawing up dungeons and weapons and enviorments and armor, but drawing like a scene and junk sound great too

  • how do you do those glows, is that a tool in photoshop? i have been drawing for years and this year have gotten into digital illustration.

  • yay i have a alienware and just ordered my intous4

  • TONE HER STOMACH ARARRRR... cant help it its my favorite thing to do when drawing females :D

  • Wondering what you think about a person not having drawing abilities but loves this type of work.

  • @LoLSkyPlus What does not having drawing abilities mean to you, missing arms? If you don't have this kind of problem then drawing ability is the effort you put into learning how to draw.

  • What episode is the one for the zombie night one?

  • @kungfuremix It's Zombie Knights, it's episode 21. But you could've gone to the channel and searched.

  • I wish I could do something like this and say "It should take about an hour" haha

  • Actually almost half of gamers are female :L Maybe most of them are more casual gamers but I think if game developers catered to us more lot's of ladies would play more hardcore games. I don't mind sexy lady characters but they can still look sexy in protective armour haha. Games like Mass Effect and Skyrim do a good job of this.

  • And I thought I could draw...

  • Fu**ing Amazing Thanks!!

  • Can you PLEASE tell me how you shade? Because whenever I draw with my opacity set to pen pressure it ALWAYS ends up looking muddy and ugly. I can't blend colours in photoshop either.

  • What program do you use to draw digitally?

  • the linework is kinda distracting

    .

  • hey wat were u doing in the beginning of the video is that done so u dont have to keep erasing when coloring the character

  • I'm glad I found your channel, I was studying concept art on my own and getting ready to get formal art education. I'm 24 now and I was about to ask if its too late at my age, I'm glad I watched the video first!

  • great video :) i just wanted to ask how did you create those glowing outlines in the end of the vid?? and one unclear thing - when you swich to grayscale to check your values - you corect some stuff when your actually in grayscale but how is it that when you return to rgb its shows actual color and not the gray tone???? O.O i mean when its grayscale - colors dont work its only values ... or how is it? i dont get it...

  • @FZDSCHOOL I'm 16 years old and i just graduated from high school in the Caribbean. I have a pretty good background in traditional art and graphic design but i just started getting into digi art. I know i don't have as much experience as you but when I start to color, the drawing just don't look as good as others even my traditional drawing look better colored so i wanted to know if there are any tips to enhance my skills in digi art. my career is something to do with concept and game art.

  • i like pencils and paper more but nice work though :)

  • What sort of standard for the portfolio is required for entrance into FZD?

  • @Warriorjemgi

The goal of the entrance portfolio is to show your interest in design. This can be in the form of sketches, drawings, written ideas, notes, etc. FZD School of Design admissions department is looking for your problem solving abilities and “thinking on paper” skills. Do refer to the Before & After sample on Student Gallery on our website to see the entrance portfolio that our students have submitted in the past. For more information, please check out the FAQ section on FZD website.

  • Feng, I noticed how you created a mask in the beginning of this video. I tried finding out how to do it, but it just won't work for me.

  • what does my grade ration have to be to enter in FZD? or it doesnt matter?

  • @pgf95

Applicants to the Diploma in Industrial Design program are required to be at least a High School graduate and pass all the subjects. In addition, you must submit the transcript and English proficiency tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. Please note that there will be a portfolio submission and interview session as a part of the acceptance process. Do refer to the FAQ section on FZD School website for more information. :)

  • @FZDSCHOOL thanks so much for replying!

  • hey THX for the video i draw like this but u showed me theres nothing wrong with it :)

  • so if you start by already make a full line art drawing of character its like painting right over in a kind of way cool i love the style of the line art

  • can i apply to the programs even am not from Singapore and also is it an online program or should i travel there ?

  • @G0ldenM0nkey

Our program is available for Local and International students.  Currently our school does not offer any online courses as practical and in-class assignments is required. Please refer to the FAQ page on our website. Thanks!

  • I can't thank you enough for all these helpful videos! It would be a dream come true to attend your school, but due to expenses and living in the U.S. it's impossible for me, which makes me very grateful to still be able to see these helpful videos!

  • question feng, as an artist who is making his portfolio currently...does all of your work have to be completely original or can you depict characters, environments and vehicles from already existing creations as well? i would like to work at bioware and virtually all of my work depicts creations from mass effect and dragon age...is that okay?

  • @InternetAesHole dude, your artworks must be original, cause all the art directors search for an artist, who can design something new. They already have artist who made old concepts, and if they want smthn like it, they will ask him. Try to add more of your original stuff to your portfolio

  • @InternetAesHole There are some really useful vids by Feng Zhu on portfolio creation and he says that it is definitely not OK to do that, not only is "fan art" frowned upon and dismissed in a portfolio as unprofessional, at worst it is considered plagiarism which is illegal. Just be inspired by other people's work but never directly copy, if you like Mass Effect, then check out the works of Syd Mead, Bioware credited him as the main inspiration for the art style of the games.

  • did you use photoshop to draw the characters?

  • you doesnt know the magic wand tool????... what a wast of time

  • @tecnodios You doesnt write much English? What a wast of words.

  • this is amazing! check out maddsketch's channel if you want to.

  • feng, have you uploaded like your brush set anywhere? i would really love to try them out..

  • I know Feng uses a Wacom intuos 3, A4 size

  • What kind of digital tablet do you use?

  • @KirarinUploads If you go to episode 34 part 1 he shows everything he uses (He has alot)

  • whats it like to be able to really draw anything you can imagine, and well.

  • How do you get your stroke to appear so smooth the way you have

  • All the videos are really helpful, thanks a lot :)

Request: I was wondering, could you maybe do a video about the professional working environment? The practical side of working in the industry. Like: project based working, freelancing, working at a studio. Inhouse vs offsite, traveling,(stability of) income, combining it with family/social, work times/overtime. How does it all work? Maybe some of your personal experiences, to give an idea of how the life of an entertainment designer looks.

  • @HologramDnB Hey, thanks a lot!!! I'll try that.

  • Hi! I just recently discovered your website and its amazing! I'm too old to enroll in your school. Anyways I have some topic suggestions that you may wanna cover for your design cinema. These are:

    1. Making custom color palettes and how to logically arrange them for a more fluid workflow.

    2. How to make custom texture and atmosphere brushes in photoshop... when and how to use them as well.

That's it for now. I'm between switching careers and I find your videos inspiring! Thanks much!!!

  • does anyone know which episode the bug that Feng was talking about is?

  • @Philosofy3 episode 6 or 27.

  • @Philosofy3

    Episode 27

  • Hi Feng and thanks - did this one start with normal sketches, notes ideas or as siluettes ?

  • I don't know if FZD has thought of it yet, but it should seriously consider making a digital art book encompassing everything Feng discusses in his tutorials. I have Digital Painting Techniques Volume 2, and it's great, but there are so many things that could be explained better and I think FZD would be the perfect company to create such a book. I also firmly believe that because of Feng Zhu's massive support base that exists on Youtube alone, the book would be a major hit.

  • like this technique alot and looks like it might be alittle faster too.

  • im really on that black and white value technique, what do you do and how do you use it?

  • I SO agree with you about the personally preferring line drawings a bit more, Feng!

  • "Make sure to click HD to see all the in-depth detail"

hmm, okay, I suppo- HOLY CRAP, THE DETAIL.

    Awesome work as always.

  • Truly amazing work, Feng. Great job.

  • Thanks for these videos they are very cool and informative to boot! :D

  • im glad to watch your many tutorial. thank u!

  • Feng, instead of erasing the overlaying flat that you are doing in 3:32 you can take the magic wand tool while standing on the flat layer, check "All layers" for the tool and click on the stuff you wanna erase, then just hit delete.

    Voila, time saved!

  • word up to the wacom 3! I got a deal on mine, so i'm psyched.

  • Great video, again, thanks.

Could you say a word or two, what to do if you have to draw all day and your wrist is falling apart. Hope it make sense ;) Bless you Feng.

  • @Morporgx

My wrists are falling apart :P Try wrapping a sock or something around the wacom pen...it helps.

  • @Fengdesigns

Sounds ridiculus :) But, let's give it a try. Btw. I got my first job offer in gameing industrie thanks to You. So, if You are ever visiting Poland, or just crash Your plain near Silesia, call me for a beer ;)

  • Hi Feng,

    I really like your vids and I really appreciate your tips and all;

but how about you putting your "Design Cinema" videos on a podcast or as episodes of a show on itunes? i think, that it would be really cool to have your videos on itunes!

I would love to come to your school for at least one course, but that'll have to wait, because I'm only 14! But as soon as I can; I'll come to Singapore! :)

    Thanks for your time! :)

  • Cintiq is more for a pure hand painting style like WoW and Torchlight. Wacom is for more photo texture work in combination to hand painting style exactly the technique Feng is showing in the video.

  • Just one question. What if your client saw this drawing and say "Ehi! I like it. Can you do it without black lines?"

How do you proceed in this situation? Do you turn off the ink layer and start rendering the painting without looking at the black lines or do you prefer to leave the lines and paint over them till they are covered by other colors?

  • @Koutetsujeeg you can start erasing lines that don't make sense in real life first, ex. lines defining hair shape. Meanwhile keep the ones in the shadow which is real. Using the opacity eraser to do just that eventually the lines will slowly disappear. For cartoony style, you can just take the lines right out and work from that, which on its own can be a style like what's seen in Pixar artbook.

  • @chaohlin

Nice idea! My problem is that if I completely remove the lines I'm not able to draw anymore...I feel lost because I don't remember the initial drawing. Instead if I keep the lines it's very hard to achieve a "realistic" feel.

I will follow your suggestion, I will delete only the lines that don't define an outer shape. Thats easy for mechanical drawings...a little less for faces and organic things.

  • QUESTION: I am a student on 2nd/4 year 3D Visualization and Animation program. But my passion is 2D concept art. Can i come to your school as an exchange student? Message me and i can show my portfolio.

  • awesome videos. Out of interest, do you ever work in traditional formats in your own time - oils and canvases etc?

  • @Daddysauce2010

No, I don't do any traditional stuff anymore. All digital these days. I'm not much of an art person. In my free time, I'm usually watching movies, checking out games, or exploring jungles in some far away land.

  • awesome vid! just a quick qtion.

after you dropped the textures in, what oppacity for the brush did u mainly use?

  • @saprissa9

Having a strong drawing background definitely helps, but it is not an entrance requirement at our School. We’ve had students who didn’t draw much at all before enrolling at FZD, but graduated with high-quality portfolios. You can take a look at some before and after examples on our official website Student Gallery.

  • It's like Christmas when he posts these!

  • yo dude, i love you in an artistic way, thanks for these awesome tuts

  • Thank you so much for sharing your work! I am such a huge fan. Because of your videos, I am seriously considering switching careers. Like you said "We only live once, so better do what you love doing".

  • which why ii plan to work hard to become one your videos help out a lot hopefully one day i can join ur school but first i think is should finish at itt-tech first just in case it doesn't ill have something to fall back on

  • im glad you said that your never to old to do this type of work cuase im 19 and since right now im getting a degree in graphic and design i thought it was to late for me to switch over i like graphic and design but to be honest when i joined the school i didn't know what i wanted to do i just joined because my mom wanted me to go do something other than sit on the couch i can say that itt-tech introduce me to alot of things concept art being one of them and being a concept artist is so cool

  • I absolutely love this episode...

...just like all the other ones, too!!

Thank you for taking the time to post these amazing videos, I'm 15 and I'm planning to study 2d and 3d art to work at a video game company, and I can't even tell you how much I learned by watching your videos and how greatful I am :)

  • Simply amazing, thank you

  • @HologramDnB Thanks a lot for answering my question, but I guess i kinda already knew that part. the laptop example is sort of an obvious shape, but how about something a little more complex like a nose, or something with a lot of texture or depth that doesn't exist like some fantasy creature. How would you know how to shade that?

  • Oops! I ran out of words on that last comment. Also if anyone else out there knows the answer for my question, please feel free to answer it. Back to Feng. Thanks a lot for posting these videos, I really appreciate your work and I hope you keep it up for the years to come. They are my art school at home.

  • Hi Feng, I just wanted to ask: You said that, when working digitally, the dpi does not matter as long as the canvas size is big. I understand this. But, at school I was taught that, in printing, a resolution of 300 dpi is a must. You mentioned that a lot of these paintings are eventually printed out in the studio. So I was wondering (if the 300 dpi I was taught at school is true) what happens if you worked your painting at, lets say 150 dpi, and the studio wants you to print it. Would it matter?

  • @mahiky

I work with a DPI of 1, but the resolution of the image will be something like 8,000 by 6,000 pixels. If you have high pixel count, the DPI doesn't matter. You can also have a tiny image, say 200x300 at a DPI of 1,000; but this image will be blurry when printed big, because the pixel size is too small. So don't worry about DPI, just PPI.

  • @Fengdesigns OH MAN! Now I understand the difference. Thanks a lot Feng. I really appreciate it.

  • @Fengdesigns Hi Feng, I sent you a personal message and I was wondering if you could reply back.

  • Comment removed

  • what classes should i take before i apply to FZD??? figure drawing and perspective is not enough. what else should i take?? anybody can respond, i dont want to bother feng. im sure he gets this question a 100 times a day. thank you.

  • Hi Feng, I'm just wondering how do you understand how to shade (render) these characters. I saw a video where you said you can shade anything by using a cone, sphere, cube, and cylinder. Is this the same thing for these characters.

  • @999yuiop

Pretty much any object (man made or organic) on this planet can be broken down into the 4 basic shapes. Once you understand how light reacts on these shapes, you can combine them into complex objects and know how to draw/render/paint them. It's an essential skill all industrial designers must have.

  • Good work on taking the time to answer questions. That should be a regular feature!

  • I learn something from every one of your videos. just by hearing how much you love about your job inspires me.

  • How do you paint in black and white to increase or decrease value of the picture?

  • Thank you so much for these videos.

  • Ahh

Thanks Feng for spending your time on this dude!! Really appreciate it :)

  • Thank you thank you thank you!

  • Hi Feng, I was wondering how did u draw Black&White and still can switch back to the colors? How did u do that? I've tried to use "Ctrl+Shift+U " to get black images, but when I done I couldn't get back anyway....Could you please tell me how did you do that? I'm really appreciate...

  • @MrDaniel800 put a flat black layer on top of your layers and change it's blend mode to saturation.

  • @MrDaniel800 do what hareljiann1 said, or do what i do, and just use Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer (click the half black and half white icon in the layers palette)

  • an another awesome tutorial! you are rock feng

  • how do you select colours so quickly?

  • @Ben4views to select colors quickly hold onto 'alt' key to color pick the photo texture reference that's first laid down as base.

  • After you create your mask, and then you make your layer above it to paint your color, how do you get your "marching ants" to disappear? Whenever I do this I ctrl+click the layer with my silhouette, the "marching ants" appear, and I paint on the layer above. There is something that you do to make them go away. What is it? Thanks ahead of time for your response.

  • @pbryant23 Control/Command + H hides them. They hide just about everything on the canvas that isnt part of the painting, like guides for example. Dont forget that you hid them tho, otherwise you'll break your brain when you cant figure out why you cant paint on another area :P Press the same key combo to show them :)

  • @fronteraster thx man. i could never figure that out. i'm pretty sure i will forget to unhide them and go crazy trying to figure out why. hahahaha.

  • @pbryant23 LOL been there, done that. :P Good luck!

  • I admire you taking time from your busy schedule to produce free high quality educational videos. Afaik you're the only one that does this.

QUESTION: Is taking your own photos or searching from google and studying from those a valid way of studying in comparison to life drawings? It's often not feasible to go out to find subjects to study when photos are so much more convenient. Is it dangerous to rely too much on photo study even if you make effort to not fall into just tracing and copying?

  • @Floatharr The major difference is that when you draw from a photo you studying an already flat image while drawing from life forces you to take a scene with depth and express it on a 2D plane. Drawing from photos is fine for things that you don't have access to, but it's also important to do studies from life - even if it's just random people in a coffee shop, stuff around your house, cars...ect. Drawing people also forces you to learn to draw a figure quickly using a solid gesture base.

  • @Floatharr When you have painted enough from photos, you'll be amazed at how much you'll learn from real life. Photos are just as important for its convenience and vast varieties. It's a learning cycle that cannot stop.

  • @Floatharr yes, the point of drawing from life is that you are rendering a 3d object on a 2d surface. photos are already 2d so they take that learning away. Not to mention that cameras don't capture color the way the human eye does. If life drawings a problem then use a mirror, draw friends / family, people in public etc. Photos are great once you have a basic understanding but if you look at any good artist, they learned from life.

  • @Floatharr

We encourage our students to take their own photos and buy a ton of books. Google is very limited since images from books will never show up (copyrighted). The way we use photo-ref is a bit different. We teach students to understand the fundamental shapes under the image and draw everything that's there, not just what they see. And tracing and copying is a huge no-no at our school.

  • @Floatharr You can study from photos, but you want to put them into a perspective and make them 3D. There was an episode where Feng had a file that contained bugs from photos and translated them into a 3/4 view 2PP perspective plane.

  • Wooo, hes back (:

  • btw feng you should build your own pc's if you find yourself changing every 2 years. For what it seems like you are paying you could probably squeeze about 20% more performance for the same price if you build yourself.

Also if your getting a new pc soon I recommend waiting till about august because amd will release their new bulldozer processors.

  • @whosthisguythinkheis

Yeah, I'm over-paying for Alienwares for sure (latest quote I got for the PC I'm about to buy is around 9K USD!). But I just don't have the time anymore to build my own (buying parts, building, testing, installing, etc.). That time could be spent on a paid-project, and the fees from that will buy a lot more than just an Alienware. So it's a trade between time vs money....which one is worth more?

  • @Fengdesigns Well when you think about it that way if you spend about a few hours, like 9 hours max making a new build yourself you'll save money in the long run and not have to waste time looking for a newer pc in the near future because you'll be able to upgrade without having to worry about warranties and thus meaning you won't have to waste another 9 hours making (including the time ordering parts) within the next 2 years.

But yeah I can't put myself in the shoes of a professional though.

  • Do you paint these in CMYK or RGB in photoshop?

  • Thanks for sharing Feng! Huge fan of your work!

  • Thanks for these Feng Zhu! Excellent as always!

  • thank you a lot !

  • The men's line drawings look incredibly cluttered.

  • @whosthisguythinkheis is that because of what you said about not being able to suggest forms?
