Touch screens are good on phones and tablets but not for normal PCs. There are situations where a touch screen is great but most of the time the best and most productive way to interact with a PC is via a keyboard. Next best is a mouse.

Is this going to try & push clunky interfaces on me again? There's a reason I got rid of Windows Media Centre from every recent PC I've bought & instantly replaced it with VLC, it's just unnecessarily slow & resource hungry, same as Internet Explorer with Mozilla Firefox.

There are tons of touch screen desktop units on the market that this will be awesome for. Also, technology is going mobile. Accepting this is important as living without mobile tech in the near future will be like not have a pc today. This is a great move on Microsoft's part. Hope to see more soon!

I think the layout is good, it's practical cause touchscreens are popular. But you should be able to open over two programmes and make their screens the same size cause when i'm on youtube i'm also on another site.

they didn't change anything, they just put a touch interface over the actual windows architecture. So basically what they did is create yet another background process that will be exploited by hackers since you will just have it open and connected to various things all the time. I'm glad I switched over to Linux.

There's not really a big change, just a few additions. The Windows 7 interface is still there, but there is also features from something similar to Windows Phone 7...it's not like you have to use all of the new features.

@Mrsaladization No it's not - unless you upgrade to Windows 8. In which case, no it's not, because you don't have to install them. The touch UI is an alternative interface to the desktop UI (which generally has too much fidelity for touch). You don't have to use the new UI, nor do you have to use the self contained "Apps" that will accompany it. You will be able to use Windows 8 like any other version of Windows, or stick with XP/Vista/7 for as many years as you want. Like always.
@G0lfYankee Ubuntu is the way to go for (ex-)windows users. For experienced linux users, there are hundreds of distros to choose from. But none of them is "lame". It's all the same kernel, just a different GUI and some pre-installed apps. There's no "best" distro. No point in arguing about how good a distro is. For now, what we all should do, is show all these windows users how much better linux is. I would use Ubuntu for that, since it is designed for this purpose. Cheers
What do applications like software development and 3d modelling look like on touchscreens ??? at the minute, I am inspired by the mac's multitouch trackpad e.g. 3finger drag option... and a touchscreen should be able to do the job of hotkeys better - but I imagine existing software will need *quite a bit of reworking*.

Cudos for hanging in there, but much like '95 freaks out on web 2.0, XP's lack of interoperability will eventually force you to use W7+ anyway. It's just delaying the inevitable.

Second, why cant anyone see they can use it both ways? i mean, its not that hard. Plus itll be on arm now, tegra 2... after saying tegra 2, i believe the ipad just bit the dust. why argue about what OS is the best. If it is your favorite OS then buy it.
Now back to the topic of this video. ... I am skeptical about this simply because Windows has traditionally been aiming to suite keyboard/mouse users, I know you can revert back and all, but rest assured the next windows wont have that backward compatibility as windows 8 might because well.. it's obsolete. Also, it reminds me of the iTouch, ... I already have one, but nothing like good old windows... (7 and younger)

@Mrsaladization No it's not - unless you upgrade to Windows 8. In which case, no it's not, because you don't have to install them. The touch UI is an alternative interface to the desktop UI (which generally has too much fidelity for touch). You don't have to use the new UI, nor do you have to use the self contained "Apps" that will accompany it. You will be able to use Windows 8 like any other version of Windows, or stick with XP/Vista/7 for as many years as you want. Like always.

@G0lfYankee Ubuntu is the way to go for (ex-)windows users. For experienced linux users, there are hundreds of distros to choose from. But none of them is "lame". It's all the same kernel, just a different GUI and some pre-installed apps. There's no "best" distro. No point in arguing about how good a distro is. For now, what we all should do, is show all these windows users how much better linux is. I would use Ubuntu for that, since it is designed for this purpose. Cheers

What do applications like software development and 3d modelling look like on touchscreens ??? at the minute, I am inspired by the mac's multitouch trackpad e.g. 3finger drag option... and a touchscreen should be able to do the job of hotkeys better - but I imagine existing software will need *quite a bit of reworking*.

Cudos for hanging in there, but much like '95 freaks out on web 2.0, XP's lack of interoperability will eventually force you to use W7+ anyway. It's just delaying the inevitable.
