Newer Toyota MR2 w/ Honda Acura K20 SWAP

that is a cool ass car. i thought someone would do this ever since i seen a honda engine swapped into an elise. i'll never afford the lotus, but this would be cool. i just got an ls engine (just a 400hp, no z06), but its gonna take a few more years to gather the funds for the parts to get it into my little old miata. in my opinion, the mr-s would be cooler, but still too much dinero for my poor ass...

Interresting mod. I havent seen a Honda transplant into a roadster before. The V6 from the Carina is a popular swap in the UK but I like the Honda. I had a Roadster with a 2zz conversion a few years ago, now have an S2 Elise with a K20 engine conversion. Loads of onboard vids from these cars on my channel.

I don't think anyone can deny that Honda makes some pretty damn good engines, probably the most notable being the F20c and K20.. The MR2 had a superb chassis but the engine was not as good as the K20, so why not make a good car even better? The chassis surely can handle it.

mid engined K20? What's not to like? I don't see the point of being all brand loyal. Both companies have merit, and it's not like their cars are our own works.

You've never drive a MR layout before huh? No offense to anything, but I do agree that the K20 should have been elsewhere. But with MR2s, you'd put a 1989 CIVIC and a 1989 MR2 and you tell me which is better. Explain the difference if you even care to acknowledge a 1989 CIVIC.

@boostenthusiasts60 i atcually own a 89 civic and a 91 (i kow u comparin with 89)mr2 there are both excellent cars they are different in thier own way a real enthusiast can appreciate both layouts my personal opinion on the civic is that its extremely light capable of reaching very good power to weight ratio on a decent swap versus the mr2 superior handling and feel is incredible ist more of a track car than the civic...cons civic fwd layout sucks !! mr2 way harder 2 drive(fun) and hard 2 fix

Why do a K20 Swap into your 91 MR2? Stick with something new, 22FRE, or 4th GEN 3SGTE or even more, Individual Throttle 3SGTE VVTi Beams..

@LilJvv Its easier to swap in a 3sgte in it Lots more power and you'll maintain the cars natural balance.

You can do the K20 swap but the K20 is a much lighter engine so youll need to alter your suspension to compensate for the reduced weight.

Also a K20 engine costs about 2 times as much as a 3sGTE

@3star2nr haha really dude! the 1zz-fe that comes on the mrs is lighter than the k20. The 3sgte is old technology and has a cast iron block which is heavier than both the k20 and 1zz-fe aluminum blocks wow!

Not so. The 3SGTE is outdated technology. Don't get me wrong, I love Toyota, but they don't have anything the K20 has at this point. I can't wait until Toyota starts making sports cars again, people will start lifting those engines for older cars.

And SERIOUSLY wtf happened to toyota? back then they were the shit, now they have nothing :/ however, I think with the recent bad press, toyota will be awesome again in another 10 years, they gotta make big moves to get their rep back and they know it...can't wait until they come out with some new sports cars...

not a fan of this swap. not saying the k20 is bad but. 3sgte swap could get 300 to the wheels with everything stock just a boost controller i have seen it. you could get a a lot more bang for the buck. to the people arguing about turbo vers na its not comparable turbo is easily better easier and cheaper to make more power. trying to compare a supra and skyline to a nsx witch is all handling of course this car will be faster on the corners its not the lag making it slower.

It makes total sense to swap the 140hp granny block that was in there for the 210hp k20 wich can be easily tuned for 220-250hp.

And for all you turbo junkies out there, there´s alot of things to consider with a turbo like turbo lag especially going in and coming out of a turn. Where a NA engine can keep it´s full power throughout the whole turn. It also adds to more weight. Cars with NA engines tend to be more efficient on tracks than turbos.

Especially the more technical tracks.

Wow you are so freaking wrong! There are soo many turbo's out there that get their full spool at 2500-3000K RPM's. There are more turbo'd cars ont he track than you think. NOOB, go read up on turbo's and stop spreading false info.

No to mention, if YOU weere so scared of "turbo lag" get a freaking SC. N/A will never touch F/I cars. At the end of the day all of this depends on the tune. Any F/I cars can be "efficiaent" as you call it. Like I said before, it's all in the tune.

I don´t recall being disrespectfull to you but since you can´t comment without being a noob bitch then here we go. Turbo´s were banned from F1 competition in 1988, NOOB. Yes there are turbos that spool at 2500-3000 rpm but not in extreme HP applications NOOB like JGTC, Lemans.

Almost all turbo cars get spanked in GT series in the corners. Look at the supras and skylines vs the nsx for an example. They allways have to catch up on the straightaways.

And superchargers are limited by the cranks rpm range so that won´t work either. Turbos are awesome on big open circuits but once again they fail on the small technical courses. And remember, i´m talking about high HP applications now. In the 200-300hp range with smaller turbos then yes, they totally kick ass like in rally and in tour car series. I never said there were not many turbo´s on the track and i never said i was scared of them. Just comparing the 2 noob.

yeah its real. its mike's car. its a sleeper, toyota spark plug covers so you look in engine bay and would think its all oem toyota unless you know your motors. and yes i believe it was for sale awhile ago, from what i understand the owner was moving so it had to go, not sure how much it sold for though. this car was extremely quick and agile. the power-to-weight ratio made this car a track monster. i would know, we worked on it...
