  • well they may not be as well done know but thats not the point. the point is getting better tricks and entertaining the audience who watches 5 minute edits on the internet. its not about the art as much as just focusing on the skiing.

  • Plake is right! he way I see it there is "Filmmakers" and "Skifilmmakers" Any good Filmmaker could make a good skifilm but today the industry is governed by "Skifilmmakers" with little or no touch. Andrew Kidman could probably make a kickass skifilm. And I bet Herzog could do it to if he wanted to, because they are good at making just that; Films. Telling the story is what it's all about, if you are a filmmaker!

  • I wonder if Eric Pollard is watching.

  • @jamesmaccon

his stuff has never been about being extreme, its about capturing the essence of skiing

  • Droppin science!

  • ma come cazzo li porta sti capelli

  • word up!

  • He has a valid point. Ski films were more of an art and took the time to really examine the sport than they do today. In this day and age the attention span is so short, most people are bored with the film half-way through it. I must admit that the athletes are doing some amazing things, but the production and craft in film making is really lacking.

Someday, people will get sick of this forum that is popular today.

  • His criticisms are spot on. Seems like so many of the modern ski movies are all about being "X-TREEEEEME." I also want to know the backgrounds, the locations, and the stories associated. I hope today's ski film makers watched this interview!

  • im from sun valley

  • excuse me does anybody know if this film is going to be shown in europe and when?

    thanks

  • Using an absolute term such as "never" is foolish - especially if you don't know someone. You end your little sermon with "I know I'm not" as if that demonstrates some humbleness on your part. Please. You've already indicated a degree of arrogance with your earlier generalisations and now this. Your presumptions about what I might think are of no consequence to me, but here's a tip: don't be too quick to categorise people based on a very limited text exchange - you'll look a lot smarter.

  • People like you are never...

    As good as you think

    As smart as you think

    As hip as you think

    As open-minded as you think

    As talented as you think

    I know I'm not.

    Get over yourself.

  • I have no interest in watching the newer breed of ski films. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of soul put into them and that, for me, is a big part of what made Stump's films so unique and wonderful: a whole lot of soul (and one hell of an imagination!)

  • Have you watched any? If not, then how can you make an honest assessment?

Steep is an excellent ski film...well made and full of soul.

You sound like your Dad complaining about the music you used to listen to as a teenager.

  • Actually, my dad never complained about the music I listened to as a teenager! But since you've mentioned music, I will say that the newer ski films I've seen are much like so much of today's pop music - generic, with little imagination or "soul" evident. A large part of it is due simply to the current social and economic climate, which affords little leeway for imaginative products that don't conform to the mold. If you have some particular recommendations regarding ski films, I'm all ears.

  • I gave a recommendation: Steep. I find it annoying when people think the music or films of their generation are somehow superior. It is all subjective. By the way, pop music never had soul. It's meant to be fluff enjoyed by adolescents that are too young to have much soul. Complaining about this generation's music or films, etc makes you seem old and anachronistic. If you look hard enough, there is good music and films out there. Just like there is good & bad music & films in every generation.

  • Pop music never had any "soul", huh? It seems that your understanding of the term "pop music" is limited (and based on misinformation). Certainly, if you think that "pop music" is "meant to be" nothing more than "fluff enjoyed by adolescents that are too young to have much soul", then you are wrong on two counts. Too young to have much soul? I feel sorry for you - I had soul when I was three years old and reacting very strongly to music on an emotional level. Continued...

  • As a professional musician and someone who has researched popular music at a post-graduate level (and taught the subject at a graduate level) I can attest to the depth of much of the pop music that has been produced. If you'd like some references to help broaden your scope of knowledge, I would be pleased to forward you some titles. As far as complaining about "this generation's music or films" is concerned, it has nothing to do with any generation - young versus old. It has to do with...

  • ...the state of an industry that has become refined to the point of stagnation. Granted, I'm not as aware of ski videos as I am popular music, which is why I asked for some recommendations on your part (it seems you were only able to offer one...). Regarding subjectivity: some things are subjective, some are not. The mode of operations on the part of the corporations that own record labels is not a subjective matter.

  • HA!

  • are you retarded. do you know how much time it takes to get a good shot, good light, and good snow. The pros are waking up at 4 and hiking up to steep spots all day every day to get shots and newschool has imagination two. Stump never had gnarly ass spine lines like TGR or huge ass jumps like PBP and MASSIVE pillows like MSP. so ha i proved you wrong newschool has tons of soul and way more imagination the Stump so know what your facts and ACTUALLY WATCH THE NEWSCHOOL VIDEOS BEFORE YOU JUDGE THEM

  • Retarded? No. I have no idea what you're getting at with your points regarding lighting and good snow - not to mention "pros" getting up at 4:00 A.M. What does that have to do with my comments? You haven't proven anything except that what you value in a film has nothing to do with the "soul" I referred to in my earlier post. More imagination than Stump? Okay - if you say so. I have watched some "new school" videos and I haven't enjoyed them. If you have any to recommend, I'm listening..

  • I know some of the park stuff is dumb but just watch TGR movies and you'll see the soul. i agree that park films like 4bi9s So Far So Hood kinda suck but the TGR guys are skiing gnarlier stuff then Stump even imagined could be skied i know Stump is a legend of ski movies but just watching Blizzard of Aaaaaaaah's and then Re:Session (by TGR) is crazy. TGRs new movie has some the gnarliest AK spine lines i think even Stump is impressed with

  • and the soul it takes for Sage Cattabriga, Seth Morrison and all the other TGR guys and dont forget the soul it took for the late and great Shane McConkey to go Ski-BASEing. i agree that the newschool park shit is annoying but all the TGR and In Deep segments have tons of soul. and even some of PBPs backcountry segments are crazy. so make sure you see all the new ski movies before you judge all of them

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check some of those out for sure.

  • dillikins

    Others to consider....

    Steep

    In Deep

    The Edge of Never

  • Thanks for that, Steve.
