I don't surf as much as I used to back in the 90's and definitely not in the 2000's, academia took surfing's place... but still, I don't understand the draw for competitions. It just seems so soul-less... and tow-in surfing seems to be just the same, though I like watching the new moves that come about. Is it just me or are those 1970's surf movies like Bali High with 'Tommy' Carroll surfing 'Ulu' still so cool with just basic surfing, no skateboard moves.

I dunno...I've seen Craig Sput on bigger waves at the entrance to Humboldt Bay...seems to me Mavericks was pressured to happen on a weekend and early in the season to guarantee a repeat performance of last year would never happen again...how about Mavericks II later this year?...like....when the waves finally show up...

Whoa, haha I'm a Swede/Finn. The contest is never held on really big days. Check out the Dec. 4 footage. Some of the waves were easily in the 60-70 ft. range.
