There is a similar trick, which uses a transparent metal wire cage. To see how its done, you can watch the movie "Prestige". The bird actually gets squished and the magician takes out another bird, euthanizing the previous one... But it isn't how THIS trick is done though :D

Nice video. Can this box be used to make other things disappear than livestock? Or is the magician just limited to doves? I was hoping the box could be used to vanish various items like a paperback book, a cupcake, several decks of cards, etc.. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this question!
