what can you expect to a false religion like catholic church? for those who will contest, try thinking for yourself if a Godly religion can allow this demonic thing to happen in their church..
@spectoriate not sure, this place is in Rome at the side of the Capuchin church. There is another place in Palmero Sicily which is famous for its mummies
@spectoriate I was at this location back in 2001. It's very close by the Barberini Metro station. It's located in Rome and it's not for those with a weak countinence.
At the end there is a plack that says what you are now we used to be what we are know you will be. after a prpy amarican girl read that she started to cry it was so funny :)
The bird man and this crypt were the oddest things i saw when i went to rome. Its location is odd too because its just a small building right in the city.
This was one of the high points of my visit to Rome. Amazing...but really don't understand the old Catholic obsession with death, when the real focus was supposed to be eternal life.
Sick i think, same in Paris, mass killings in the name of god, whatever was the religion at the time,, creepy, We know our bodies are here for a while, why collect dead people and make a displa
@daddieo1970 It's a burial site originally for the Cappuchin Friars. Later it became a status symbol where rich people payed to get buried there this way. I have a feeling you are a stupid liberal because you think like one, always with the ignorance and hate speech.
I've read that photography is not allowed but I don't really know how you could've made this video if it wasn't allowed to take pictures. Do they mind if it's flash photography? We plan on going there next week but it'd be a bummer if we wouldn't be able to take pictures or record a video in there.
I went there this summer and it was so creepy. Just think: they're waiting for people to rot so they can dig them up and use them as decorations. I don't know. Just seemed a little weird and dark to me.
Those exhibition of death related imagery (or real skeleton in this case) are called "memento mori" meaning: rememeber you are gonna die. They are are supposed to make you think about your own mortality.
There are many examples around europe from medieval age to renaissance.
Others culture too have similar display, I am thinking about south america culture and all those death masks.
Saw this on the last of my three days in Rome (Summer 2008). One of the most awe-inspiring, eerie places I've ever seen (even for Rome this will cause some jaw-dropping). It's dark and macabre but also lighthearted in its way. These Cappuccins had an acceptance of their mortality that is joyous (when it's not freakish). Highly recommended for those who haven't been!
Visited there thirty years ago. Creepy. And the living monks tending the place were even creepier than the dead ones.
The story is when the church was built (13th century) they brought in dirt from the Holy Land to bury the monks in. When they ran out of room, they took the oldest bones and used them to decorate the walls so those monks could still be considered to be buried in dirt from the Holy Land, as long as they were still in those crypts. Very eerie place.
Don't think it has changed much since you were there. There are quiet a few bone churches around Europe I think its to remind us that we're only here for a short time!
This doesn't settle right with me. Here you have several thousand men who dedicated their lives telling people about eternal salvation in Christ, and yet find it necessary to have their material bodies preserved and displayed for as long as possible. I don't know if I can put a definate reason on it, but it seems wrong, somehow.
It's not that they want to preserve their material body. They wanted to show us that our beautiful body will become just a bunch of bones so it's a way to remember how weak is life.
I disagree. Material bodies mean nothing. Life is in no way weak. You must see that life has so many meanings that life is not weak nor strong. It is simply a lesson to be learned.
A Crypt with five alters decorated with 4000 skeletons,a plaque there says 'as you are now I once was, as I am now you one day will be' thats usually enough to sent people running to the nearest pub !!(or church)
How can this lead to the pits of hell? These monks were good men. Their holy bones have been used to build a house of God, what better place is there to Rest in peace other than a church.
and they invented cappucino's

"Tu fui, ego eris"? Is that similar to what it said? Or was it really in English?

There was an old plaque then beside it a translation on a card I think. This place is the real deal its old, musty and damp and not touristy.
