I remember when I got this game. I knew nothing about it at all. I played it for about 20 minutes, all I remember was the long text describing the war, and then showing up in the town, running around. I got bored before leaving the town and left it alone for months. One day I decided to try it out again, powered it up, walked away to get a drink, came back to see the FMV playing. jaw dropped, played 14 hours straight.
@tiakpark xgam(dot)org covers that all pretty well in their index section, including some connections that are mostly overlooked (just click on the starting letter in the word you are interested in.) But the perfect works I don't think elaborated on a lot of the the metaphors in the game leaving them up to the player, like any good artist would do with a painting or lyrics to a song! Hope you find what you are looking for.
Actually this video is not meant to be seen in this format -- it was made as a way to save disk space.
The PS1 FMV accelerated libraries that Sony provides are stored in a fixed bitrate format, which has sound whether you like it or not. The FMVs you *see* in the video do not actually have FMV audio in the game -- rather the synthesized audio system handles the audio for those segments and the FMV audio is muted. Instead, they threw in the song onto the audio track for the FMV file for "free"
This video was originally intended to follow the opening video, and the opening credits were to be shown over it. They had to cut it, though...actually, they had to cut A LOT from Xenogears. Games are too ambitious every now and then, and that's always a sad case--you know the developers wanted to make something much better than what came out. In the case of Xenogears, that's really a big shame because it's incredible as is, so imagine what it COULD have been!
@TheShockMaster Had nothing been cut from XG, the game would have been a total of 6 disks with a 7th JUST for the ending and soundtrack. (and i would have LOVED every sex of it.)
@TheShockMaster I completely agree with you. This game's story, art and playstyle were so amazing that it took several years of study in other religious texts, psychology and biochemistry courses to completely understand some of the underlying principles used throughout the game's massive storyline.
As far as Xenosaga, I think that the first one was on to something, but the follow ups were not what I would have expected given such a rich base to draw from in Xenogears.
If you can get a hand on the Making of Lunar: Silver Star Story, it's just a pre-loaded movie player designed to play all fmv's located on the disc. This glitch apparently works with other games as well, but Xenogears is the only one I've heard of that kept content that was otherwise dropped, and is thus 'secret'.
But still, I'm getting sick of the Xenosaga hate... it wasn't as awful as you claim it to be. If Xenosaga is bad... then Xenogears isn't the best rpg ever either then.
The thing is... Xenosaga was never supposed to be a prequel for Xenogears. It just played with the same mythology/ideas... but Gears fans still had hope, then got bitter and hate/blame Xenosaga ever since.
Anyway, I hope Xenogears will have a remake one day... because it deserves one.
Episode 1 of Xenosaga actually takes place in the realm around when episode 1 would have been though. Episode 1 of Xenogears in the perfect works states its about Jerusalem which Xenosaga had a lot about. But after Xenosaga 1 the creator took it in his own direction since he was no longer with Square. But episode 1 and 2 would actually have to be 5,000 years apart.
Yeah but... Takahashi told us Xenosaga wasn't a prequel... and he told us when Xenosaga 1 came out. He wasn't stupid, he knew since the beginning he couldn't create prequels to Gears.
I'm half blaming people who turned their back on XS/Takahashi (just because XS wasn't their precious XG prequel) for Xenosaga getting shorten to 3 episodes. If the guy got more support, the series would have been way more awesome and maybe still there.
Xenosaga wasn't scrapped because no one supported it. It actually had quite a large fan base both here and in Japan the issue was that Namco made alot of changes to XS2 without Takahashi approving of those changes to his story. So he left half way through production on XS2 and had nothing to do with XS3. Namco had to end the series because he was no longer directing it.
That's another internal problem... but I'm pretty sure the poor sales didn't encourage them either (and while XS2 was really disappointing... many fans left before they could even play it... just because they learned this series wasn't going to be connected to XG). Another example of what poor sales did, XS3 just didn't come out AT ALL after the poor sales of Ep2 in my country (France). After all, Xenogears didn't get prequels/sequels because it didn't sell enough.
True, but the style and topic is extremely similiar. Focus on cutscenes and story, psychological, religious, complex, deep, science-fiction. Xenosaga is not worse than Xenogears, if you take off Nostalgia glasses.
@Hupuable Just because you're one of the rare people who loves Xenosaga as much as Xenogears, doesn't mean that we are wrong in disliking Xenosaga or that you are wrong in liking it. Honestly, I can't sit through 5 minutes of Xenosaga without gagging. I had high hopes and was open minded, but I was hugely disappointed. They are VERY different games.
xenogears should really get a remake with graphics like xenosaga, and the ps1 storyline intact. it will be great :S

@Lingadil I think we would all agree that the novel portion should be turned into gameplay.

@Hupuable, because xenogears was fully rotational and each town had so much to explore. Xenosaga was linear and the cut scenes looked creepy.

Does the Perfect Works ever cover the Kabbalahistic symbolisms throughout Xengears?
