i just got a rat and he was really nice. now im opening his door and letting him come out and i give him a little food.... but before at the pet store he was nice and and the clerk squezed his cheek and put her finger in front of his mouth and he didnt bite. but now he will bite someone's finger and thinks its food . i feel like i ruined "the not biting anyone thing" please help ASAP
Hi Syria...: Have you gone onto any 'Rat Forums' for suggestions? That would be best...get some expert ideas from fellow pet-rat owners re their adaptable (changeable) psychology. The rat is now accustomed to associating the tips of people's fingers with food. Try approaching the rat with your hand sideways in order to pick it up, but never with food. Reach toward the rat's back and 'claw' the rat into your palm gently and begin massaging its neck and back. Good luck!

For the first few times it will nip at your fingers, however, eventually it should learn that hands are not for feeding; squeeking or responding to the bite might also help deter the rat. Also, some owners train their rat to distinquish between a consistant feeding hand (such as the off hand) and a playing/picking up hand
omg. i currently have 3 boys, and they're chubbs! you think it's too late to get them comfortable enough to like running around in an open room? i've never done that, and they're almost a year old. they love playing too, but they can be such scaredy-rats!

i have a problem i have a blind rat named Oasis, i got her two years ago and she is going on her third year, well before i had to go to collage me and her were close now since im back she bites and rips skin she doesnt want anything to do with me and she is getting very old and i dont know how to get her back to her old self, she wont even let me pick her up anymore, is she too old to go back to her old self?
Please Help, im tired of my family being too scared to feed or water her. cuz of bites

So glad my mum hasn't seen this.....she would either be hysterical or passed out. Hates rodents and is scared of my ferrets cause of their 'big pointy teeth'. Those rats were having a blast, greatly loved pets. It's a shame our pets have to leave us. :(

They really are like little dogs; you can teach them tricks, they lick you, you can walk them. It's a shame that they still have such a bad reputation..
You should not be putting that rat in your mouth! Little kids our taught that!!!!! The rats can get bacteria from us and you can get bacteria from them!! If you do research it tells you not even yo kiss them! Everything else is great tho good job you have a cute bunch of rats!

Unfortunately, they do. :/ I stayed with a friend who had three lovely rats and the whole place was very, very pungent. :S Rat pee... of love. I know boy rats declare their love for their owners that way. X3
I have a girl rat and it doesn't smell bad at all. Its pee doesn't either. The reason it might get bad is when it has been built on. As long as you spray around and clean carpet once in a while the room will smell fine.
Your friend didn't know how to clean them properly..They don't smell more than a cat or dog, or human under the same circumstances...I get the pungency can be a big turn off, it's for me, but poor ratties they are otherwise clean..:)
Cute. But be careful...Three words: Shaken...Baby...Syndrome. Too much throwing and bouncing could lead to brain damage. They seem to enjoy it, though. If they didn't they would bite you, right? Peace Out!
Ps: I live in a 30 square meter, they're always close to me and jumping on the cage bars as soon I'd get to the kitchen :-) on of the two is little bigger and daring (tries to catch my finger through the bars)
I ve got my ladies for 3 weeks now (got them 6 weeks old) I was told that they should be kept in cage a few weeks in order to let them getting used to my movements, the smells, the sounds (tv, etc). I ve been sitting in front of the cage, giving them food with my hands (so they know I would'nt be a tthreat for them). When I put my hand in the cage they both come and get curious; Is this a sign they're ready?

@KarniMata - I think that's cos women are generally more understanding and less judgemental. I've had ratties for the past 10 years, currently have 7. I had a good laugh at this video - my ratties are pretty much like this with me too.

Yup! You don't see them scurrying away and hiding on us do you? :-) (By the way, they're passed on now...they were great while they lasted...just under 2 years of life sucks...too heartbreaking! Miss 'em lots though!
Sure! Lots of handling/touching. Play with them at least 1 hour a day. Don't use cedar-chips as a litter base - will affect respiratory system - only 'Yesterday's News'. Get use to them peeing everywhere - it's how they make a trail to follow. No biggie. Put money aside for vet bills. You'll need it! Use Hagen Rat blocks food as a base - limit treats or they get fat/unhealthy, just like us! Pad wire cages with flexi-plastic - easier on their little feet. Hope this helps! :-)

Hi again. Boys pee A LOT more than girls. Reserve 'play clothing' for yourself. You'll need a rug-shampoo every 6 months or so to remove stains, or you can use some pet stain remover before you do a home-job shampoo of the rug. Re shoulder - let THEM determine how and when to climb up high on you. Don't let them fall!! :-) Good luck! Thawed frozen peas and corn - an ALWAYS favourite too! They'll get spoiled with too much though...we certainly know that!
This may be the case. however it is risky to get your rats fixed, so unless they are going to be mixed with the other gender its ideal to leave them be

Dude, I don't know how I feel about this. It's kinda cool, but it's kinda gross. It's really NEAT but kinda creepy. Someone told me rats were REALLY smart. And they really seem to KNOW YOU!
@CRYST2SHELL Of course they know him! :) Rats are social animals, which means they love to play and bond with other members of their group, whether rat or human.
Once I kept some baby rats for about two weeks, then had to leave them with their old owner and brothers/sisters while I went on vacation. When I came back, I knew I would have no problem picking out my own rats from the litter, even though they were all either gray or black. The two that had been mine ran straight up to me!
depends on the rat/s also, I've had 50 through my time (I used to breed) and I brought the little ones up to like all sorts of play. some relished the throwing, I would 'toss' them on to the back of the lounge and they would hold on when they landed... actually taught one lil boy to jump from cage to cage with that.
Some just never liked that treatment, so I stopped doing it to the ones which persistently reacted bad to it. Each rat to their own/er...... ;)
How did you go about teaching them to get thrown up like that...im trying to teach my guys to let me do that, but they dig their claws in and hang on for grimm death and to get them airborne Id have to Shake the Off and Fling them into the air...otherwise they are comfy with me

your rats are adorable. its so cute when you wiggled your fingers on the floor and 2 of them ran to you. When I do that my boys get all hyper and start skipping and hopping around and nibbling me and try to wrestle with my hand.
I used to love letting my tatties climb all over me and investigate what's in my mouth. Sometimes they would find a yummy bit 'o something stuck between my teeth, O MY!

I love my rats to death too,.but I think letting them stick their heads in my mouth or letting their razor-sharp little claws slash my bare legs would be taking it a bit too far. I do, however, let them take food from the end of my nose.

I had a few rats that absolutley LOVED being tossed, although, I tossed them onto a pile of blankets while i was sitting on the bed, but they ALWAYS ran right back to me, and did the excited little nip, like, "come on dad, do it again!!!"
Great Vid...shows how much he loves his rats and how much they love him. they have so much fun. My rats and I used to have so much fun. My oldest girl used to get so excited about the car drive when she heard the keys jingle...she would come running to the door to go with me. and then sit up on the dash board till we got to the coffee shop where she got little cookies from the girls in the drivethru...lol
Rats usually go back in their cage of their own when they played because it's their sanctuary sort of. Your you just pick them up and put them back. Absolutely no problem. :)
They'll go back into their nesting area quite easily - ours are actually trained that when they hear a certain whistle that playtime is (reluctantly) over and will clamber back in by themselves and sit there waiting for treats :)
this is now my new favorite rat youtube video. it truly shows how fun rats are. i have two dumbos myself (and have 9 before them) and i am also babysitting four! they are great fun and i play with them all the time and treat them as if they were children! and this video is so nice and adorable. your rats are so playful! mine are too... that is until they get sleepy and them cuddle up and take a nappy with me.
Nope, they DO fight, but that's rather cute, and in the next moment, they cuddle again. I have two rat boys, my flat mate has two girl rats, and none of them has ever really hurt the other one. ^^

Sure! Lots of handling/touching. Play with them at least 1 hour a day. Don't use cedar-chips as a litter base - will affect respiratory system - only 'Yesterday's News'. Get use to them peeing everywhere - it's how they make a trail to follow. No biggie. Put money aside for vet bills. You'll need it! Use Hagen Rat blocks food as a base - limit treats or they get fat/unhealthy, just like us! Pad wire cages with flexi-plastic - easier on their little feet. Hope this helps! :-)

Hi again. Boys pee A LOT more than girls. Reserve 'play clothing' for yourself. You'll need a rug-shampoo every 6 months or so to remove stains, or you can use some pet stain remover before you do a home-job shampoo of the rug. Re shoulder - let THEM determine how and when to climb up high on you. Don't let them fall!! :-) Good luck! Thawed frozen peas and corn - an ALWAYS favourite too! They'll get spoiled with too much though...we certainly know that!

Dude, I don't know how I feel about this. It's kinda cool, but it's kinda gross. It's really NEAT but kinda creepy. Someone told me rats were REALLY smart. And they really seem to KNOW YOU!

@CRYST2SHELL Of course they know him! :) Rats are social animals, which means they love to play and bond with other members of their group, whether rat or human.
Once I kept some baby rats for about two weeks, then had to leave them with their old owner and brothers/sisters while I went on vacation. When I came back, I knew I would have no problem picking out my own rats from the litter, even though they were all either gray or black. The two that had been mine ran straight up to me!

depends on the rat/s also, I've had 50 through my time (I used to breed) and I brought the little ones up to like all sorts of play. some relished the throwing, I would 'toss' them on to the back of the lounge and they would hold on when they landed... actually taught one lil boy to jump from cage to cage with that.
Some just never liked that treatment, so I stopped doing it to the ones which persistently reacted bad to it. Each rat to their own/er...... ;)

How did you go about teaching them to get thrown up like that...im trying to teach my guys to let me do that, but they dig their claws in and hang on for grimm death and to get them airborne Id have to Shake the Off and Fling them into the air...otherwise they are comfy with me
AND I would Never wish to harm or injure them in anyway at all...ever!!! gotta love them ratties, so cute, intelligent, funny and downright adorable

Make sure u give it constant attention, and try to hanndle it as much as u can staight away so it can get used to u :) ive had 3 rats and my recent one ive had 3 days and already hes used to bein handled :D x they love sweet things too lol anythin they shudnt eat they love!

i own a rat n they love being thrown around and stuff like that also, rats can survive a 50 story drop so i think him playing like that wouldn't do anything.

I do this with my rats too. I toss them and then I tickle them, they do funny sounds like their like "more, more, more!". lololol

your rats are adorable. its so cute when you wiggled your fingers on the floor and 2 of them ran to you. When I do that my boys get all hyper and start skipping and hopping around and nibbling me and try to wrestle with my hand.

I love my rats to death too,.but I think letting them stick their heads in my mouth or letting their razor-sharp little claws slash my bare legs would be taking it a bit too far. I do, however, let them take food from the end of my nose.

Lol, not gross, rats spend 3rd of they're waking time cleaning themselves. They are 6 times cleaner than the average human.

I had a few rats that absolutley LOVED being tossed, although, I tossed them onto a pile of blankets while i was sitting on the bed, but they ALWAYS ran right back to me, and did the excited little nip, like, "come on dad, do it again!!!"

Great Vid...shows how much he loves his rats and how much they love him. they have so much fun. My rats and I used to have so much fun. My oldest girl used to get so excited about the car drive when she heard the keys jingle...she would come running to the door to go with me. and then sit up on the dash board till we got to the coffee shop where she got little cookies from the girls in the drivethru...lol

Rats usually go back in their cage of their own when they played because it's their sanctuary sort of. Your you just pick them up and put them back. Absolutely no problem. :)

They'll go back into their nesting area quite easily - ours are actually trained that when they hear a certain whistle that playtime is (reluctantly) over and will clamber back in by themselves and sit there waiting for treats :)

this is now my new favorite rat youtube video. it truly shows how fun rats are. i have two dumbos myself (and have 9 before them) and i am also babysitting four! they are great fun and i play with them all the time and treat them as if they were children! and this video is so nice and adorable. your rats are so playful! mine are too... that is until they get sleepy and them cuddle up and take a nappy with me.

Nope, they DO fight, but that's rather cute, and in the next moment, they cuddle again. I have two rat boys, my flat mate has two girl rats, and none of them has ever really hurt the other one. ^^
