@Mb3th4321 Everything happens for a reason. What your stating is based on pure opinion but you have the right to believe whatever you choose. Some people believe in creation and base their theories on a book and faith, while others base it on facts introduced by the people that study such fields. Whether you choose science or faith is up to you, but don't act like your answer is the only correct one.
good point but the science isn't based on 'facts' its all theories. they cant prove anything since no one was there. you can only assume. and please dont be so condescending bout the faith - its not just some book
@alwayselly Science is based on fact, the things that come out are theories. Its a scientists job to go out and prove the theory. Fact only gives you a plausable explination.
@alwayselly Was being far from condescending and science is a mix between theory and FACT. And to others, it is just that: just 'some' book. Faith is faith. I won't deny or disprove that a book can't be correct, BUT as you stated that science is 'based on theories' so are books such as the Bibles, Karan, Kaballa, whatever... There is no way in an shape or form for ANYONE to prove that such stories actually occured, but its based on the theory of faith in a religion that it did. My point is..
Don't suppose we could ever manage to get them to come to Australia... sniffs... apparently it's popular here toooo! :3
Though I'd have to refrain myself from squealing like a crappy fangirl when sheldon/simon comes near me haha! Sigh.. I usually hate that behaviour toooo ^_^
The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc."[1] Formerly, the term referred to a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat, snake or bugs.
What i never understand is how people can call geeks weird... how they dress up in cosplay (if you are into that) or.. being overly obsessed with some show, for example. Yet, look at all the sports fans.. they all go nuts in stands, here in Australia they paint themselves their team's colour (in football) and yeah. Yet that isn't seen as being overly obsessed ... Nor is it being obsessed with cars lol.
I liked Star Wars as a kid - though it was one of those things that I loved but forgot until I saw it when I was older. I'm pretty sure at some point I would have imagined fighting like a jedi though! And I'm a girl :P :D
But I spent most of my childhood liking pirates, and then getting into fantasy. I like star wars now though :P :D
Though I never ever got the rivalry between star wars and star trek. I grew up on Next Generation, and bits of star wars. But I liked both lol
Didn't even know there was rivalry now until I was in my senior year of highschool and some of my friends were like.. "Star wars sucks... or star trek sucks." It was one or the other! O_o lol
And come on! Everyone has a little bit of geekiness in them! Otherwise you would be plain, boring and dull! :P :D
Chemistry is a branch of physics, which is a more delimited notation to decompose whatever surrounds a person and what´s accessible to her by active or passive response. The most delimited language valid for all areas and all degrees of the scale dimension is math.
It's been pretty good regarding the science but they kind of flubbed the season 2 finale. They should have been looking at the north magnetic pole (if anywhere) and not the geographic north pole.
How can the water in a glass then be at different temperatures. I've put a glass filled with water in the freezer and after a while the water was frozen on the outside but not in the middle. I'm not saying you are wrong but I'm just wondering. Is it then that all the water is at about 0 celsius but some of it isn't just solid?
''A glass of ice water does not begin to go up in temperature until the last bit of ice has completely dissolved, and then the temperature starts to change. No one believes me. I read that in the Smesonian(sp?)''
Does anyone belive there is an actual formula for Pi? I don' know (something like an equation to calculate the sequence of numbers). If math is to make the world simpler by numbers then there must be something more to it then random numbers as everyone says.
Yes, of course there's a formula, there's a few actually. If you think about how a circle's circumference relates to its diameter, there's the equation circumference=pi x diameter. So if you want to make pi the subject, you'd get pi=circumference/diameter. As I said, there are many more.
Perhaps you mean perfect conduction? I should think there'd be a temperature differential from glass to ice, but a slight one. Conduction would have some play as well.
Need to get me a thermometer now and see if the differential is detectable (crudity of thermometer will reduce likelihood, heat conduction of glass will increase).
Pi. e. Fibbonacci, molar # atoms.. loads of cool constants.
agneishde, "genius" and "smart" are like language. You don;t ask "Do you speak language?", you ask "Which language do you speak?"
You should not ask "Are you smart/a genius?", but, rather, "What are you smart about?" or "What are you a genius about?"
I know geniuses who can't even burn water, have "black thumbs" and couldn't nail two boards together if you precut and predrilled them, yet can whip my butt in chess, or maths, etc
The ice thing is complicated. Water won't go above freezing until the ice melts, as long as the water stays thermally mixed. Of course, in a big enough glass, the water on the bottom can warm up, but water near the ice stays at the freezing/melting point until the ice is all melted.
Or they had their brush with fame being filmed by you, Phil.
The show doesn't run in Germany yet (and I don't watch TV all that much anyway), consequently you and Adam were the only ones I recognized. So while we are already geeking out here: Many of the truths that we cling to depend on our point of view. :-)
Thank you very much for this Phill... But about that ice-in-a-glass thing. I have to ask this.: Does the same thing apply for the whole planet? Are we screwed when the last bit of ice caps is gone? Are the ice caps keeping the ocean temperature at a stable level? :P
I would assume that a sufficiently large body of relatively still water (an ocean, or even a bathtub) would have a temperature gradient. Anyone know how quickly heat conducts through water?
Thanks for uploading this, nice work on the input!

I actually have a square pyrex pie dish and a round cornbread tin.. and, yes, I got them for exactly the reason you'd suspect :P

Who remembers pi anymore? Calculators have it built in, there are other constants to memorize.
daymyth 3 years ago
Pi.

So true... I love it

The ice thing is complicated. Water won't go above freezing until the ice melts, as long as the water stays thermally mixed. Of course, in a big enough glass, the water on the bottom can warm up, but water near the ice stays at the freezing/melting point until the ice is all melted.

we learned about the specific latent heats in grade 11 physics class :)
Pretty interesting stuff

Or they had their brush with fame being filmed by you, Phil.
The show doesn't run in Germany yet (and I don't watch TV all that much anyway), consequently you and Adam were the only ones I recognized. So while we are already geeking out here: Many of the truths that we cling to depend on our point of view. :-)

Brush with fame... When you posted this, I was fully expecting you to be up on the stage, and didn't find that expectation at all surprising. :P

Thank you very much for this Phill... But about that ice-in-a-glass thing. I have to ask this.: Does the same thing apply for the whole planet? Are we screwed when the last bit of ice caps is gone? Are the ice caps keeping the ocean temperature at a stable level? :P
uni4dfx 3 years ago
I would assume that a sufficiently large body of relatively still water (an ocean, or even a bathtub) would have a temperature gradient. Anyone know how quickly heat conducts through water?

Noticing his videotaping as the cast is introduced, I wonder if Johnny Galecki has a secret YouTube account, haha.
I would've loved to have been there. Your brush with fame is awesome.

Great to see a new video from you, and also your small brush with fame. =P

OK Phil, I know you raised your hand for all of those.
