Actually year/month/day makes more sense if you want to sort files based off of their date values treated as strings. If you put day in first then '20/12/2009 pic.jpg' and '20/06/2003 pic.jpg' will be right after each other and the sort is all messed up. Just my way of doing dates.
People unfamiliar with the format are often confused by iso dates (or worse, they try to correct them!) so I use ISO only for storage and sorts. If I print them out, I usually reformat them according to the local custom of the intended recipients.

That's what we call an ISO date. (see ISO 8601)
