@musetv13 go to your tv and the video settings and make sure that the "720p" checkbox is enabled and the "1080p" checkbox is NOT enabled. After that plug it back into the 27" iMac (must be the 27" model) and turn it on then after a couple seconds press "command-f2". Now I noticed that sometimes my screen would still just show up black for a bit and go back to the computer... but just keep trying and it should work. Good luck!
hey i haven't tried this but i think if you want to get 1920x1080 from ps3 to the imac is to change the imac screen resolution to 1920x1080, but i haven't tried it it just seems like another way lol
Are you still able to run programs in the background or does it turn the imac into just a display. I am recording now with a hauppauge but I am getting a 27"imac and can't find out anywhere if I can record without the hauppauge. Please let me know whenever you get a chance thanks
Hey dude ;) I have mine hooked up to my imac with the kanex xd and I can get sound through my sony speakers via the 3.5mm jack, but when I switch in system preferences to my krk's nothing happens?? any ideas?? ;)
It wouldn't have any lag, its basically a regular tv input port, and it has no effect on your system whatsoever because it uses a different bus to go to the display instead of using your computer, which basically means you cannot capture it at all.
That mini display port should be just hdmi, because thats what it is, only its appledized
@billze6 Unfortunately no, If you use the quicktime recording cam, it will only monitor and record what the computer itself is going, (which in this case while youre playing your ps3 or xbox, your computer is resting at desktop home screen, so thats all it would be recording) so that sucks
question... so you can't control the brightest when playing or change mode of the display.. anything? i guess you need to do that just before switching to the ps3
@migeru29 actually, you can control the computer while playing the ps3. Obviously, you can't see anything that is happening (since your on your ps3) but your computer is still completely running in the background. You can play/pause music in itunes, skip forward/backward songs, control the brightness and volume, etc. Its very handy to use the keyboard buttons at the top. Hope this helps.
@alejo3344mac There are some SLIGHTLY cheaper alternatives like the eyetv's, but they come with the consequences of a big lag and crappy viewing quality
Look i have an imac 27 too, a ps3 for sure and yesterday my Dr. Bott HDMI Digital Video Link was delivered. Unfortunately i don't know, how to set up my PS3 to be able playing my ps3 on my imac screen. You mentioned to set the ps on 720p on my TV, but i can't find the setting for it :( please i need urgent your help. Your help is very necessary for me, i would thank you a ton :)
typically you would be correct on a hd television.... but this isn't a tv, it's an Apple iMac 27" and its resolution is FAR higher than a HD tv.... SO that being said, the 720p input is then upscaled to fit a 2560x1440 (rather than 1344x756 which is the standard 720p). This causes the image to look "pixely" when sitting close to the screen... it will be like this with ANY converter for the 27" iMac since it's input will only support 720p and not 1080p. hope this helped
hmmm... i guess to scale 1080p to 1440p is less visible. but 720p to 1080p is more visible.. or... maybe the imac scaler sucks.. because my friend have a 30 inches dell display with 1600p! and he even scale wii games (1440p) and you can hardly tell the difference.
well like i said in the video, the pixely look is minor and i was just being picky. if you sit more than 3 feet back from the screen you can see it at all. and it's actually not the iMac's scaler... iMac's don't have built in scalers. Its the 3rd party product (in this case dr. bott's) scaler. And i whole heartedly agree that it would look better on a 30" dell since it can have more pixels it would be able to support a higher input resolution.
i just did my research and dr boot doesn't have any scaler.. it's just an hdmi to mdp converter, that's it.. the only way to watch 1080p would be using an external scaler which can do 1080p to 1600p then we need a dual link dvi to mdp converter.. but you will not only be able to get 1080p but also upscale to 1440p and not just double the pixels.. obviously there are scalers capable of that. .but maybe not external ones
Unfortunately no. And as far as I know (I have been in talks with several different manufactures for 27" iMac converters) 1080p input will never work because the imac's native screen resolution will not support that input. So these companies have to just make them at 720p output and then scale the images up to fit the screen
Yes this is what I was discussing in the video. You must hook the ps3 back up to a tv and go into the display settings and change the output to 720p. Then after you've done that hook it back up to your iMac, turn it on, wait for a few seconds and then press "command-f2". Hope that works for ya
Try what I said to do in the vid. Plug it back into your tv, change the display output to 720p, and then try it on your iMac again. I had the same problem until I did this. Hope that helps.
I set the PS3 to 720p. But when i play (PES 2010 / 2011, MW2) the quality is really bad. Why might that be?

Excuse mate,
I have got problems with the video settings.
When I plug in the hdmi cable I turn on pressin cmdF2 and everything is black.
How do I change the settings on the ps3 if I can't see anything??
And if I can connect the ps3 on a Hd TV what settings do I have to change?
I do have to tick out 1080 from the video settings??
I appreciate your help cause I m nearly goin mad

Step 1) Plug in ps3 to your tv through the HDMI port.
Step 2) Go to the settings column in the ps3 main menu and go down to "display preferences" (might be display settings etc.)
Step 3) Change resolution output to 720p and disable the other options
Step 4) Turn ps3 off and try it again with your imac
Make sure that the ps3 has been on for a good 5 seconds before pressing the Command-F2 button. Hopefully that helps.

why there are pixels? 720p does not means it should look like that when watching close.. there must be a problem with that converter then
