Why is it called the "Puppy Episode"?

@MirandaAugust64 Because way before she decided to come out on the show they were discussing what to do with the character so that she can develop, so the writers said ok, let's give her a boyfriend, then someone said 'This can't happen, Ellen's gay', then they said 'All right then let's give her a girlfriend', but the producer said 'Don't even think about it' ... eventually somebody said 'well let's at least give her a puppy'...And that became a code name for this episode, she got her puppy:)

I think I saw this in a series called "The real Ellen story" or something that aired years after...it also said there was some buzz and rumours on the episode and people were wondering what the name meant and eventually the whole story and script leaked, so everybody knew...That episode drew some 45 million viewers, I think

It was a running joke during Season 4 that "something big" was happening to Ellen Morgan before the end of the season and DeGeneres remarked in her typical humorous way that "either Ellen Morgan comes out of the closet or she'll get a puppy"... this was her clever way of keeping people guessing clear up until the reveal.
