The service rifle is a pretty good gun if you have the strenght and skill requirements and put both the modifications on it

The M16A1 should be Automatic, now The M16A4 is 3-Round but very powerful and accurate and full of range. There is also a M16 Carbine.

the strangest thing happened to me when i was playing this mission. i ran all the way to mojave outpost to talk to major knight for the reinforcements when all of the sudden on my screen it says " Lieutenant Hayes has died." so im sitting there dumbfounded....what the hell happened to him?? yes i cleared out any convicts, creatures, etc. it was wierd i talked to him in the tent, ran to the outpost..and then he died. uh...
