I think Paki originated in the UK with the influx of Pakistanis in the 50s onwards. Here, it's usually meant as a term of abuse to describe an unattractive person that *looks* Pakistani - greasy, pitch black hair, brown skin, dark eyes, hooked nose. You also have to remember that Pakistanis are Muslim which may account for why some people don't like them.
