Awesome! David Maslanka is the man! at 4:21 I hear some Give Us This Day mvt II after the "calming part", i like to call it...Give Us This Day is my all time favourite...
Thanks for posting this! I played this in college in 1997. I remember our director telling us we were doing the premier Texas performance. This is such a fun piece and brings back great memories.
i love the sound of this song, but it is so LONG!!! i have perc. 3 and at one point i don't play for over hundred measures!!! and I noticed a lot of missed/messed up parts (percussion wise)... some were very noticeable, some not so much... at least to me... but either way, the song is AWESOME
We're playing this in my symphony band. This song is so much fun. The asian theme is probably my favorite. I play the Eb Clarinet part for it. The runs are so much fun. It's so much fun. We have to learn it in less than a month.
The juggle between the first clarinets for solos at about 2:30 is really cool to listen to.
We just started working on this in our symphonic band and our director is determined to get it up to 180. We've been playing it at about 160 lately and that's blowing my mind. I can't imagine 180!
My band is playing this for our spring concert. We have to learn this in like a month (Ouch). It's frekin 7 PAGES LONG, THOUGH! Longest piece I have EVER played in my LIFE! D:
Wow, an all maslanka festival? Sounds intense. I played unending stream on life last year and I think that unless your a woodwind, there's not much you do....about 15min of the 30min duration of this song is like....waiting....and waiting....and some more waiting.....you should be able to guess what type of instrument I play right? It's a decent song and all, I just wished that it wasn't such a large focus on a few instruments.
Holy cow! Fantastic job! I haven't played this piece [yet] but I can HEAR and SEE how difficult it is. This ensemble is truly amazing, just like Maslanka himself.
I have played 'Mother Earth' at Florida State Summer Band Camp and 'Give Us This Day' in an honor band and I must say that David Maslanka is one of my all-time favorite composers.
"Give us this day" was an absolutely amazing piece of music. I played it with the Interlochen Symphonic Band this past summer.David Maslanka truly displayed his mastery of the wind ensemble with that piece. I played the timpani part, and although it was incredibly difficult to play, it was easy to understand. He is an absolutely amazing composer, who has impacted my life with a single composition.
as great as the peice is i dont think that anything can beat Mother Earth. i had the oppertunity to play it in my schools wind ensemble and i ended up loving it more than festive overture
My university Wind Ensemble played Maslanka's fourth symphony. That piece is CRAZY! Maslanka is one of the greatest composers in this day and age, if not the best
David Maslanka is friggen amazing. We played his "Mother Earth" piece in my high school's Wind Ensemble, and that piece is wicked and extremely fun to play especially the Bari Sax part (that was my part).
i played this in my region band my senior year and i can say that this song is really hard. we played it slightly slower than this but you guys are amazing. good job to whoever performed in this.
Looks like I am going to have to revisit my hard-and-fast idea about what a "song" is. You're the second person who's said the same thing! Thanks.

One of my all-time favorite pieces! I never get tired of listening to it. (BTW, this is not a "song"--a song is a piece of music that is sung.)
Jaysne 2 years ago
@Jaysne it is still a song. each player sings their part while playing. i know i do. its the only way to hit pitches correctly on the first try.
