  • tutte le volte che sento questa canzone a stento trattengo le lacrime.

  • Never got the obsession with WWII. WWI was a thousand times more fascinating and world changing.

  • Is it just me or did they borrow some lyrics from The Cowboy's Lament?

  • @Roxmagn a/k/a "The Streets of Laredo"...yes, both songs seem to have a common ancestor, a British folk song from the late 18th century called "The Unfortunate Rake." Another of "The Unfortuante Rake"'s descendants is "The St. James Infirmary Blues", which also has some similar lyrics.

Many people think this is a traditional ballad; it's not, it was written by Eric Bogle in 1976. Another by him on a similar theme is "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda."

  • @billd66 Ohhh okay. Thanks a lot for the info! I'd love to look the songs up and compare.

  • why u guys fucked up all yourself? it's time that this irish / britain shit has an end...

    greetings from bremen

  • @phel55 ok.. and what does this have to do with the song anyway? besides the fact that my understanding is that it ended awhile ago...

  • @LadyOGreenWood

nothing to do with the song. it's about some comments here.

  • Video is about WWI, not WWII.

  • I prefer Skrewdrivers, but this is pretty good too :)

  • cant people just listen to a great tune without bringing politics into it

  • Im american but scottish and irish decent i love this song and the message is strong and makes a great point like all of u but im sad to say i think only the dead have seen the end of war :(

  • nor did they have the right to claim scotland either the imperialistic bastards. further more i believe the church was a part of the problem at the root of itall. coming around to force people to convert to their stupid religion. I follow the Old Ways. Fucking dirty roman christians. Fuck all of that shit. give northern ireland back to ireland. EIRIN GO BRAGH!!! ALBA GU BRACH!!!!

  • born in america. But when it comes towho hasmy true allegiance, its Ireland. Fuck those Saxon huns from england!! What ive learned so far about eirins struggle with the brits is that there would not have been much problem had we been allowed to hve our own governing sovereignty while agreeing to fly the unionjack. something kinda ike what i think scotland has or whatever. bu bsides that the english had no right from the very beginning hundreds of fucking years ago to try laying claim to ireland

  • Almost as good as Skrewdriver's version.

  • keep your politics, i wear the scars to bare tribute to mans blind indifference to his fellow man. the song is superb and fantastically performed... well played dropkicks

  • littleoakleaf: Just so you know, I've seen some of the horrible things the IRA has done in your name and they DID have a choice. You've managed to perpetuate the very hate that this song speaks to. Way to make yourself look like an idiot and degenerate the good Irish name in the process.I'm a Catholic born in the north of Ireland and people like you disgust me as much as the UVF and hard-core Loyalists. SHAME ON YOU!

  • I for one liked the quotes at the end. Wars will not end until the soldiers drop their weapons and refuse to fight, and then bury the weapons. It happened in North America hundreds of years ago when a prophet named Deganawida brought that about. Wars are started by men who believe their own blood will not be shed, nor that of their sons. Wars start because of oppression and unjust leaders.

  • i really didnt like the quotes at the end of the vid. the images are from world war two, and i think the boys knew the horror they were fighting. the quotes seem to suggest if we would have just engaged hitler in conversation, it would have stopped the war. unfortunatly, sometimes the only answer is war.

    ugly tho it may be.

  • @lorddomwolf There was a peace conference before WW2 though. Remember the Munich Conference where chamberlain tried to appease hitler? Also war is definitely not the only answer - the pen is mightier than the sword. Ever heard of that phrase?

  • @beefkk90 i know it well...seems it didnt work out so well for anyone but hitler. are you saying that the wise thing is to just give the despots whatever they desire? ive heard the pen is mightier than the sword many times. i love that phrase as it makes me laugh and laugh. was the third reich defeated by the pen? were the confederate states of america defeated by the pen? the romans defeated the carthaginians by way of sword not pen...many other examples if that doesnt do enough for you.

  • @lorddomwolf the only reason it worked for hitler was because he planned on ignoring it anyway. hitler was greedy. he signed a treaty with stalin but lied to him too. greed is the cause of many of those wars. the confererates wanted their slaves, the romans wanted more land. the only reason ireland was invaded in the first place was greed. greed is the curse of men and there will be more wars until people can learn share things

  • @beefkk90 there are a few details we could disagree about but yes, the reason that words dont always work is that one person /people/nation sees something that another person/people/nation has and decides that they want it for themselves.

    sad isnt it?

  • beautiful song!

  • This song got stuck in my head and I humed it during school and I got in trouble for it... But this is still a great reminder of the fallen in WW1

  • @AzureKitefan1 i got hooked on it cuz my teacher showed it to us! lol

  • @Sabradan-For the record the Welsh, Irish, and Scots are all the same race. Scotland was originally settled by the Irish. When the Scots were sent to Northern Ireland to settle they were actually returning to the land of their ancestors. As for Northern Ireland I think the problem was reduced to a religious war more than anything else. In fact I believe the original idea of settling Northern Ireland was to eliminate or convert the Catholics. In any case it was terrible for all sides.

  • 7 people are heartless fascists.

  • Just to refresh your memories, Ireland is an island to the west of the island known as Britain. Are they British? No, there Irish.

  • The green fields of France have developed a beach - Must be global warming. I'll blame BP

  • fuck off

  • HEY GUYS! HERE'S AN IDEA! HOW ABOUT WE STOP BICKERING AND JUST ENJOY THE SADNESS AND BEAUTY OF THE SONG. YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT!

  • DKM did a fantastic cover of this song.

  • excuse me, but this song is not about ww1 is about the easter revolution, or i missed the sense of the song? btw, beautiful song and lyrics.

  • its in france were all the deaths of wwii are

  • For IRELAND!!! and for the many brave Allied and Resistance souls who gave their souls in World War I , may they rest peacefully, with no more torment than they have already endured.......

  • Irish Pride Worldwide!!!

  • cum on de irish ;);)

  • what your grampa in the 9th ID???

  • The song is about the first world war and all the pictures were taken with second world war equipement. The weapon that's firing is a M1 Garand and was the standard rifle of the American troops in world war 2 XD. BTW there wasn't any landing on a beach in the first world war. German troops never made it to the shore thanks to the Brittish, Irish, Scottish, Frensh, Belgian and US soldiers. :p Greets from Flanders Fields ;)

  • @gameprofiler you can also see at the begining they are useing a ww2 heltmet

  • Long Live Ireland!

  • @JC640 where did that come from? this is in remembrance of those who died in ww1 not for ireland

  • what's that song at the end?

  • this song was written by Eric Bogle

  • i love this song. dont know why. makes me kind of sad and a little hopefull for the future of all.

  • To all those who have died in a war -worth- fighting for, I salute you. Rest in Peace, Thank you.

  • Very beautiful song. thx for showed us.

  • @cwhitfield1138. Congratz on being the most ignorant person I have seen on youtube so far today. Too many people like you spam your stupidity. I could totally tear you to shreds but i'm feeling pretty good, and frankly you did a pretty good job making yourself look like a jackass already.

  • don't feed the trolls

  • Nice video PrivateBaker (:

  • @girlsdontlikeboys shut up queer

  • definatly one of my favorite songs

  • the original song is even more powerfull

  • The original is by The Fureys and wot a beautiful song it is too. And I'm an englishman!

  • @redfan1971 Actually its by Eric Bogle, and Scottish-Australian folk singer. Theres numerous versions of both this song, and his other anti-war WWI themed song, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Its not about any specific Willie McBride either, of any nation, as no Private Willie McBride aged 19 died at the Somme, some Prvt.W.McBrides did, but not 19, some 19 did, but not Privates, some who fit rank name and age dided, not at the Somme though.

  • Least we forget

  • Lest we forget

  • war is a bitch life takes after it live as if youll die tomorrow and smile at the little things now and in the future you will be better for it

  • This song seems simply to be about war and how one human can have such indifference for another human. It can stand for many things. Many lost their lives needlessly. Not just Irish, Scottish, British. It was all who were in the war. Britten is not the only one who had their own agenda. Many Americans lost their lives needlessly on the last day of the war when the Army Generals didn't tell the American soldiers to stop fighting. They wanted to see who could advance their own platoon further.

  • not to argue with you just saying it would be english not british british could be either scottish or english it is the union beetween the two that is britian

  • When i fill in forms etc i cross out the British part and write English next to it instead.

  • But ultimately, yes, the song is about WWI and Brittain's seemingly inability to fight its own battles.

  • @batty11boy 1916 was the year of the Easter uprising which was an organized military action against Brittain. The civil war didn't actually start until 1922 when Michael Collins returned to Ireland with a treaty that would split Ireland and allow Brittain to retain some control over the Island. Vote went 64 to 57 to accept the treaty, then the government split and the IRA was born. The civil war started 6/28/22 when Collins fired upon IRA occupied buildings in Dublin.

  • The British conscripted Irish troops to get slaughtered at the Fronts in WWI, especially the Somme. Thats what the song is about. Read some books people.

  • Comment removed

  • This song is about the Great Fallen in 1916 where British troops sent Irish and Scottish troops into Somme France. Everytime I hear this I think of my cousin who was killed in Iraq. Willie McBride it happened again and again and again.

  • @tricksurfr01 , Thank You. I hope some of these commentors are not actually Irish

  • Everyone was slaughtered at the west (and east) front. It doesnt matter if it was the English or Irish, they were all in it together. in war everybody dies, its noones fault accepet or own. Were all quilty.

  • @tricksurfr01 I have to correct you , NO soldiers from the island of Ireland were conscripted during the first world war, every single one of them was a volunteer and as a foot note the "british soldiers" who fought the rebels in Dublin in 1916 were mostly Irish soldiers in the British Army , don't forget the WHOLE island of Ireland was at that time was part of the United Kingdom so the british army was the army of the country they were living in ,

  • hes supposed to be an irish soldier who fought for britain. rangers and celtic bars both play this song. think its more of a rangers song as he fought for britain in the war

  • cooljdave,

    Lets explain

The song is about an young scotish man fighting and dieing for the British in the first world war.

The singer is explaing that he fought and died for a lie.

Did you really believe them when they told you thier casue, did you really believe that this war would end wars.

Well the suffering and sorrowing, the glory, the pain, the killing and dieing was was all done in vain.

Oh Willie McBride it all happened again and and again and again and again.

  • COULD YOU FAGGOTS PLEASE STOP ARGUING!!! goddamnit just listen to the song and shut the fuck up!

  • Its sad! PLaying this song at my grandfathers funural he was a ww2 vet.

  • The song was written by a Scot, its about WWI, has absolutely nothing to do with Ireland except that it was played by the Dubliners, Clancy Bro's, Pogues etc etc etc and DKM of course. In fact the song wasn't even written until the early 1970s.

  • A scot Australian and dont you forget it

  • Willy McBride was supposedly Irish. So....

  • Well its not fair to say that it has nothing to do with Ireland.

Lots of Irish men died needlessly in that war to.

The song is anti-war/ anti-empire. Which both Irish and Scot can understand.

  • I love that quote, All wars are civil wars because all men are brothers!

  • stfu.

  • yes it's about the battle of verdun, or as it was also called the "hell of verdun" or "the bone crusher" which took place in 1916. about 200.000 soldiers died in these few months of the battle. their corpses were left in the area between the fronts which was called "no man's land"

  • The line - did you really believe that this war would end wars - clearly refers to WW1 as it was referred to as the war that would end wars.

  • I m guessing the song is about both wars because that soldier (apparently fighting during WW2) is resting by the grave of that willie mcbride who died in WW1 thats just it

  • God Bless your Grandfather, Baker.

  • this songs hidden meaning is FUCK WAR!

  • are you all nuts its not about the risisng because these guys are scottish. idiots

  • irish

  • it must ben from the first world war because they are singing about 1916 and that was first world war

  • Amazing song, terrible video.

  • possibly my fav dropkick song

  • i love this song, i listen to it all the time!

  • Comment removed

  • kimsvensk you dumb fuck. The song was written by Eric Bogle and every band is able to cover it and it's damn shame that your nazi idol made cover of it.

  • they are not nazis you fuckin pollock their Irishmen,

  • please die.

  • tennents92 if we didnt join the war when we did and gemany did capture paris do u hink they would stop there the plan was to invade through belguim to avoid the major defences and make it easyier and they they would have power of calais and dunkirk we would be cut off at the english channel and would have to join germanys alliance

  • France plus élevé de liberté, de droits à la vie anglaise

  • in my opinion this song has many meanings but my opinion is that it is to highlight the atrocity of all wars fought in vain that has stolen many people away from us on the false claims of patriotism

  • good call

  • EHHHHH shut the fuck up Andrewfly24

  • You kow your history jackassfan05 :).. but it's stil å great song

  • Eric bogle one of Australia's greatest song writers (it is about The battle of the somme) but i also concur UP THE IRA

  • back then i never thought i could shoot down a german plane.....but just last year i finally managed to do so..

    Grandpa

  • Ye're actually idiots if ya think that song has anything to do with WWI. It's the 1916 easter rising. The heroes of Ireland fought for our freedom for 7 days. They freed us from those english cunts rule They'll never br forgotten. UP THE RA!

  • Facts schmacts! Who needs facts when we can so easily make up our own, even when the real facts are plainly stated. I mean, of course it is about the Easter uprsing. Who cares if the song makes mention of FRANCE. Or such lines as "AND THE TRENCHES ARE GONE" , or "NO GAS, NO BARED WIRE, NO GUNS FIRING NOW".

  • And who cares that there was 2 possible McBrides the story could have been written about, both who DIED IN FRANCE DURING WW1!

Look, I appreciate the Irish fighting for their freedom from the English. But you guys are deluding yourselves if you think this song has anything to do with the Easter uprising.

  • i cant argue with that, btw this is the post about WW1 and the easter uprising. page 3 :o)

  • How is this song NOT about the 1916 Rising??

You obviously can't be Irish if you think that this song isn't.

There is a thing called HIDDEN MEANING...duh

We fought for 800 fucking years to get out freedom and then you simply discard that fact saying you "appreciate" it...Try learn our history first before commenting on it.

As jackassfan05 said, it IS about the Rising, an event that seperated the true republicans apart from the rest of the English loving bastards.

    Tiocfaidh ár lá 32!!

  • Um, no. Tell me one line in this song that is about the 1916 rising. Its about WW1. And, yes, its about an Irishman (one who also happened to be British) but that doesn't mean its about 1916 rising. I don't recall learning anything about trenches and such in my history classes--at least not in reference to the Easter Rising--only in reference to WW1.

  • mcbride is a scottish name.flowers of the forest is a song that is played only at the funerals of scottish soldiers or vets.with the internet doesnt anyone look up anything?this song is not irish in any way.

  • @sabradan It's about a Scotsman. This song was originally sung and written by Eric Bogle, who is SCOTTISH.

Also, if it's about an Irishman, how can he be British too? At that time there was no partition in Ireland and none of it was 'British land'. Partition in Ireland didn't happen until 1921-1922.

Learn your history before you try telling people they're wrong.

  • @REHannah1995 You're partially right. Ireland wasn't partitioned until 1922, when the Irish Free State was estbalished. Before that it was all ONE COUNTRY, true enough. But guess what? It was all BRITISH land. That whole '800 years of British rule' thing, and whatnot. So, I suggest you learn your facts before you try and correct ME. Run along now, adults are talking.

  • @sabradan Okay, I admit I missed that one point, but my point still rings true. Scotsmen don't think of themselves as British, do they? Or Welshmen?

Also, I don't take kindly to comments like "Run along now, adults are talking"; having had people say that to me all my life, I would have thought that at least here people would have the common decency to accept my opinion. But obviously, I was wrong and people are just as rude as everywhere else.

Afterall, this isn't even about Ireland.

  • @REHannah1995 Well, perhaps when you stop running your mouth off with ill-begotten, incorrect 'facts' like a juvenile, maybe we shall stop treating you like one. Also, perhaps putting (what I assume to be) the year of your birth, admitting how young you are, child.

And Scottish people, and Welsh, and even some Irish consider themselves British as well...since, well, they are. That's why the country is called 'Britain' and not simply 'England'

  • @sabradan It's not called Britain.

It's called The U.K, and has been since Ireland was adopted into the country, because Britain consists of Whales, England, Cornwall, and Scotland.

  • @sickel101 Firstly, it's WALES, England and Scotland. About 3 people in Cornwall want independence. They could thrive of their ice cream.

  • @stu398 Yes, I'm aware of the spelling mistake. It's a simple joke.

Nobody in Cornwall wants independence because nobody would know who they were, then.

  • @REHannah1995 dude Ireland has always bin known as ireland to the irish

  • @bamfandbamf Erin Go Bragh

  • Maybe because the song is called Green Fields of France? It's about World War I.

  • how bout 1/3 of immigrants during the early 1900s were irish. john f kennedy was irish. notre dame? guinness? killians? whiskey? so if it werent for all the irish people coming to america, this country wouldnt be how it is now...so before you start running your mouth do some research. dont fuck with the irish

  • ok everybody lets not fuck with the irish we will get into there national sport BAR FIGHT

  • its gealic football and hurling actually mr canadian hockey

  • The one thing an Irishmen or women can count on is another Irishmen standing up and asking what your problem is , so exactly what is your problem with the Irish ,muttface

yes bar fighting is a national sport among the Irish care to have a pint and learn Irish bar etiquette, your talking to a fucking professional right here,

  • WhoooHoo !!!

Andrew Mcfly dont know who hes fucking with, hand him his ass, the Irish are here now..

  • ill tell u most of america is irish or no an irish person so fuk u

  • no they arent only is boston you knob gobler

  • Knob Gobler??? Really who is gay enough to think of that

  • Up the Ra !!!

  • Amen, and we Irish Never Walk Alone !!!

Irish American, 100% Pure Culchie like your Da's Poteen:o)

and your right most of America is Irish, dont mind these idiots they were public schooled.. maybe we should explain the famine to them. or british rule? maybe a lesson on the worst sunday in Irish History.. like i said forgive them they had to much koolaid...

  • Germans made America too! German was almost the language that would have been used at the Federal level.

  • The beer was made for men Mcfly not girls as far as the Irish we built this country you dick, read a book.

The Hands That Built America, Were Irish, You Moron...

  • And German. Lots and lots of Germans.

  • yes germans too, nice of you fella,s to bring the Franks. but no race put more blood sweat and tears into this country like the Irish

  • The song isnt about the uprising my friend and im glad its not, the song was written about WWi it was written after the artist saw the massive cemetary set aside by the french for our fallen,

  • tennents92 (3 days ago)

anti the greed driven capitalist system.

I don't see how it had anything to do with capitalism. Most countries in Europe were still monarchy in WWI. Greed has no government. Monarchy, Communism, Democracy, or Capitalism itself. Greed and imperialism have been waged in every form of government known to man. I don't see why everyone blames capitalism for everything. Everything has two sides, and everything sucks to an extent.

  • willie mc bride was an irish catholic who fought in the same regiment as my great grand dad, royal enniskillen fusiliers, listen to the fuckin words u dum orange cunts before comenting, he neva fought 4 sum fuckin english king!! its about the lies the brits told the many irish men that joined the british army during ww1, 'fight againest the germans and we'll give u ireland back' the irish were used in ww1, just look at the somme!! IRELAND FOREVER Tiocfaidh Ar La.

  • and thats the willie mcbride story i heard here in America growing up. almost text book to what my grand father Chester McClain told is as Children.

Erin Go Bragh ~ Tiocfaidh Ar La

  • No surrender to IRA scum!

  • Neither asked nor Given, Quarter that is...

    remember, Never Defeated...

  • Yes, cos that explains how we still have the Six Counties. Don't get me wrong, I love Ireland (my dad's Mum's side comes from County Antrim) but Ulster is British. No Surrender!

  • IRA is an organisation that fights for the rights of irishmen. unfortunately with wrong methods, later.

  • I prefer to think of them as what they are. They're terrorist scum. Granted, our side is far from innocent as well (UVF, Black n Tans, etc). But still, call a spade a spade. IRA are terrorist scum.

...And besides, the residents of N.I. are not 'Irishmen' in the sense the IRA want us to think. IM an Irishman (by descent, and thinking of moving over to NI) but I, like all the residents of NI, are, first and foremost, BRITISH.

  • British first. Irish, Scots, Welsh, English what have you second.

  • @sabradan How can you say this? I don't associate myself with being British, I am from northern Ireland, i am Irish I do not wise to be associated with Britain. Its my own choice.

  • northern ireland is part of great britain

  • @guitarguruah you fuckin idiot "great britan" isnt a union anymore its a fucking island northern ireland is part of the uk but part of the island of ireland and soon a fuckin united ireland so up yours queerboy

  • @LittleOakleaf I live in Belfast. I consider myself fully Irish, as well as fully British.

  • @LittleOakleaf All on the island of Ireland are Irish, well done man

  • Of course, the IRA is terrorist scum. But when I think about, that someone would come to Germany (I am German) and would try to annex a part of it by violence and oppression, I would be the last person who would watch it without to react on it. They have got the best reason you can have to grab to arms.

  • Here in the UK we'd tend to disagree with you.

  • @sabradan No we are not British. I live in the ISLAND of Ireland. I am Irish. Also, IRA had no choice but to form, the British Army sent to protect us were just glorified terrorists who killed many innocent people.

  • @LittleOakleaf Every poll for the last ten years says the majority of Northern Ireland would rather continue to within the union of the United Kingdom. As an Englishmen I have respect for all Irish whether northern or southern, and abhor some of the acts caused by my British Army, but it does not even come close to the barbaric and cowardly acts of the IRA. Though i doubt the Northern Irish are inclined to unify with the south with the state of the economy down there.

  • @davidtanner213 you are right about the polls but you are forgetting that the majority of northern ireland is loyalist while a minority is republican. It is very true that the IRA have done cowardly things but the concept of guerrila warfare is how southern ireland came to be free. The IRA doesnt have the support it used to so its acting hastily. The economy in the south is in a word - Fucked, but with all the budget cuts westminster is producing northern ireland could be feeling the pinch too.

  • @LittleOakleaf i strongly agree with you. i am part irish but im mostly scottish and i think that the brittish were bastards for doing that :( war is the worst thing to ever happen :-)

  • @sabradan How can you call the IRA terrorist scum when the Loyalist paramilitaries are just as bad, if not worse, than them?

I'm part Irish, but mostly English, so therefore I am British. If you're Irish by descent it's highly unlikely you're fully Irish, so you can't call yourself an Irishman. Residents of Northern Ireland are 'Irishmen' because Northern Ireland was, until recent years, part of Ireland and most of them are of wholly Irish descent.

  • WELL SAID sabradan. NAW AveSanguinius YOU HAVE MISSED THE POINT WITH YOUR IGNORANCE. THE 36TH ULSTER DIVISION WERE THE BRAVEST MEN OF THE WAR WHO ALSO GAINED THE MOST FOR THE ALLIED FORCES

  • NO SURRENDER!

  • An outstandingly beautiful song.

God bless young Private Willaim McBride of the 36th Ulster Division who fought and died for King and Country

  • Who died for greed and stupidity more like. I think you've missed the point entirely.

  • Not really. I believe it is YOU who have lost the point. This song is anti-war, not anti-country and anti-patriotism. All the men who fought and died in the Great War, and all the men (and women) who fought and died in all the wars since are/were patriots. To me, at least, the song is saying that the most patriotic thing would have been for the war to not been fought, leaving these men to be able to grow old and be good citizens, and yes, indeed live, for King and Country.
