I get the concept of this anime but I have to say it takes a long time getting there. It's taken 4 episodes to even start to explain what's going on.....I think that's why so many people don't get it..........I don't think I have the patience to keep watching this.....

@moviemadhelen The "explanation" is there from the very beginning; you just need to pay closer attention. It doesn't tell you with its words or dialogue. It's subtle. Look at the imagery. Look at the details. Think for yourself.

Evangelion was awesome man! I loved it! but it wasn't as complicated as Lain. I mean sure the ending was a little confusing because it focused itself on the feeling the people were feeling after the murder of the last angel but before that it was fine.

Well here goes my theory. I think that the wired is kind of like the matrix and the events within the wired effects you out side the wired. (Its kind of like in Nightmare On Elm Street Freddy kills people in dreams and they actually die) I think that Lain is "the chosen one" (rather like Neo) and the guys with the red dots and glasses are like the bad guys. I think the Knights manipulate the wired through hacking like the people in the Matrix. I may be wrong but Im eager to find out.

"Reality" in this case is the fake world. The real world is "The Wired". In the Matrix reality is well.. what it is.

Other religeons insinuate along the same lines; that everything corporeal is an illusion, and reality goes beond what the senses are currently limited to.

Serial experiments LAIN is a very good anime. The complex story line makes you want to follow it, and follow it through. It tells a story of the connection between the wired and the real world in which case they can be intertwined. She is able to connect to anyone in the real world through the wired and communicate with them. If you really want to understand more you have to watch it to the end. By the way I'm only 15 and I understand this quite a bit.

@AtheistTabbiChan i usually ask people like this to offer their interpretation. Making a sweeping generalization like this means nothing unless there's substance to back it up. The synopsis she offered is the very top layer of what this movie is all about. There's so much more to it than that. For example, she has something to do with the wired that goes beyond user or even power user. That much i've figured out. I find it very unlikely she's just a little girl. I suspect she's a terminator :D

@AtheistTabbiChan But more than her just being advanced hardware, i think the movie is making a subtle hint (and i haven't seen it all just yet..) that they're ALL hardware.. or more that the wired was created to exploit the hardware/software system of the human mind and body but most of them don't realize it. There is a religious connotation here i think.. but it's subtle. I'm having trouble explaining my suspicions.. And i might be wrong.

@lostpunker2 I wouldn't necessarily call LAIN complex as the show has no real narrative direction and structure but is mainly centered around that one idea of the connection between the wired and real life and the blurring of the line that separates the two. LAIN is an incredible series not because of a complex and enthralling story line e.g. BACCANO, Count of Monte Cristo, Monster etc. But it's exploration of an idea in a unique and intresting way in without any narrative constraints
