  • I am so glad they switched this and Krupke around from the play. It makes a lot more sense and matches with what is happening right now.

  • Tucker smith fucking rocks!!!

  • awesome!!!

  • Epic.

  • How can anyone not like this?

  • West Side Story is sooo amazing!

  • I love this scene however if only they lived by this philosophy from the begining none of this might not have happened.

  • I had such a crush on the redhaired babe Graziella (Gina Trikonis); so lovely, sexy and wonderful.

  • Glee? Fuck that Flight of the conchords brought me here.

  • This sucks cuz the audio is out of sync. Kind of important with a video like this: dance with syncopated rhythms. I've seen this musical more times than I can count growing up and I'm also a dancer so I noticed it right away. Please fix it!

  • lol what the fuck is this shit? hahahahahaha im so high and i randomly dearched cool. hahahahahahahaha just smoked some grade a.

  • @KTMisFORfaggots LOL right on but u should have checked out cool down by slightly stoopid..thats what what u should be listening to high man

  • I am thirteen years old and I absolutely love these kinds of movies. Eliot Feld (Baby-John) had pneumonia during this whole scene if you can't tell, and he passed out from exhaustion after this scene and they had to take him away to the hospital. This movie is amazing, sad, and so attractive at the same time. I love Baby-John. R.I.P Tucker Smith and Natalie Wood.

  • @PonyboyMyLove When I was your age (about 50 yrs. ago), I had the biggest crush on Baby John.

  • 54 people aren't playing it cool.

  • The principles are such well trained dancers and actors. The combination, set against a perfect score make a ballet that is descriptive of where these kids are psychologically. Possibly the most well crafted modern dance musicals ever made.

  • Tucker Smith "Ice" 1936-1988 Great dancer! Tony Mordente "A-rab" met Chita Rivera "Anita" and married her in 1957; he is 5'5". My crushes were George Chakiris [5'11"] and Richard Beymer [6'2"]. I think I first saw this movie in 1965 in CA. I love it so much! Thank you so much for uploading this!

  • @mangledinal nice information

  • @mangledinal Sorry to be so pedantic, especially with some one who, like me, adores this movie, but didn`t Tony Mordente play `action`,...............Oh, by the way, i`m 6`2".

  • @MrValiant61 I am sorry. Tony did play Action; David Winters played A-rab. 6'2" is a perfect height for a man. I am 5'10". Hard to find guys as tall as you, Mr. Valiant. Take good care.

  • Action looks like Joey Tribianni from Friends!

  • I love David Winters <3 He's sooooooo hot in this ;)

  • This is absolutely trippy to watch.

    Go man, Go!

  • Checkout channel and sub

  • I wanna shit...shit cool!

  • this is a real musical xx

  • 2:00 He's on drugs...

  • Did a youth theatre version of this when I was 19,got to play Diesel and do this, the best number in the show. A few years later I landed my dream stage role, Riff in another production of West Side Story, but the proper stage version, guess what,in that Riff gets this number and loses Officer Krupkee, fair swap IMHO :)

  • never seen this movie

  • 3:15 BONER

  • Interesting trivia about this scene from IMDB:

    - "Cool" was such a demanding number for the performers, Harvey Evans (aka Harvey Hohnecker), who played Mouthpiece, later stated that the actors ritually burned their kneepads upon wrapping the scene.

    - Eliot Feld (Baby John) collapsed and ended up hospitalized with pneumonia during the demanding filming of "Cool".

  • Awesome sequence, brilliant movie. Riff and Ice were hot. :D

  • Gap Fat! :D

  • "POW!.......What the hell are we looking at?"

  • 3:13 to 3:26 is my favorite part. So epic

  • Anyone else think it's not a coincidence that the gang member Ice is singing the song 'Cool' :)

  • @Spiritcycle1 His nickname was diesel in the play and the song was song by Riff before the fight . The song sung at this stage was the comedic "Officer Krupke" it was swapped over (a great idea in my opinion) as it was felt that it was better suited to the film.

  • This reminds of Michael Jackson's video for "Bad"...

  • @MegaBatman33 couldn;t agree more

  • awesome

  • i played snowboy in my highschool performance

  • :34 freaked me out the first time I saw it... O.O

  • i love that tourettes bit @ the end

  • This is definitely one of the best scenes in the movie.

  • Im sorry Glee usually represents, but they didnt for this particular rendition. Im not hatin, I just found it veeery unsatisfying. This scene is hot and electric, its dirty and sweaty full of anger and desperation; very in the moment. A decent homage to this scene requires dancers, like, REAL dancers. People who've taken ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical etc, for years. They should have recruited some old school trained dancers to back up Harry, and signed him up for some Jazz classes

  • @TheBambieyes He is a dancer, though. He's taken years of lessons - it's the singing that he's not been trained in.

  • @czyascanb But isn't he more hip hop based in his training? Thats the problem I wish bboys, breakdancers and the other hip-hop guys would understand, while hip hop is legitimate dancing, it would behoove them to take more traditional dance classes (ESPECIALLY BALLET) b/c that's where they get their fundamentals. It improves the hip hop dancing AND it gives them a foundation so that in case they ever wanna do a musical number, they have the training to pull of numbers requiring training w/o

  • @czyascanb looking awkward. Im not knockin Harry or anything, but Ive seen the performance and Im an avid fan of old school dancing. Ive seen and experienced the dance world enough to be able to look at someone performing and tell whether or not they have had classical training (believe me, it shows). Its really not Harry's fault, I blame the choreographers, directors, etc. They should prepare the cast better when it comes to dancing...

  • Ice is a badass......

  • Gosh, the way they move.. It's as if they're light as air! They make it look so easy! Amazing!

  • I'm out of breath just watching them! Amazing...

  • best song

  • Kool

  • 240p, we meet again

  • These dance moves are the most difficult, the dancers often got hurt or sick from exhaustion. The entire sequence is another masterpiece from Jerome Robbins...noone can choreograph like that now a days!! WEST SIDE STORY will continue to be the best musical of all time!! God bless them all!

  • "Riff is dead!" "HEY NEW GUY! TAKE HIS SONG!"

  • @ShaneWLowe Actually I think you'll find Ice, as he is called, was Riff's second in command for the entire film. it's only natural he takes the Jets on after Riff dies.

  • what genre does the music itself fall under? Jazz? I don't know:p

  • ...... There's a Glee version of this? Since when?

  • @lilium14100 Since they made an episode where they did this play.

  • Impossible Trumpet Part. :P

  • *Whoops!! I meant Eliot Field (Baby John)

  • Tucker Smith, David Winters, and Russ Tamblyn33333333

  • This is SO where Grease got the snapping thingy from!!!!

  • that spin on the knees- ohmyjeez- I can't even do a spin up on my feet perfectly yet ._.

  • ugh...Tucker Smith was so beautiful...

  • SO COOL

  • i came here b/c of the gap commercial

  • From the Jets. The ones who played Baby John and Velma started their dance studio after this film.

  • some of the greatest movie choreography ever..

  • @nicki446 Ever!!

  • I see now where Michael got some of his moves and stories for videos from...

  • too bad it's not in sync

  • THANK YOU GLEE FOR INTRODUCING ME TO ALL THOSE WONDERFUL MUSICALS <3

  • that was epicccc and cool!!!!!

lol i love West Side Story

People in my high school say i can't believe you like that shoop!

I say the same back to them :D

    This is real music

    not that rap crap!!

    RAP IS CRAP YO!!!!

  • @awesomeness34567 ...i really like this music but guess what else i also love rap

its all an opinion so u can just try to appreciate all music and not rip on it just cuz u personally dont like it

  • this was real cool.. *pun intended* ;)

  • why are the top 2 rated comments connected to glee? =()

  • @rickardroll Because Glee featured WSS and this performance and not everyone has is happy about it.

  • man, that was cool

  • little john is my favorite dancer. the guy went on to become a great choreographer! add him on your FB page!

  • Amazing(: haha Alex Michael Stoll brought me here(: I love him-3 even though he wasn't in this movie,he was Riff in the broadway production 2011-3

  • love an all guys dance number with tension and rough and tumble. love WWS!

  • soooo much snapping!

  • With the exception of Sweeney Todd. But again, that's Sondheim.

  • In my opinion, West Side Story is the greatest musical ever. The standards of musical theatre nowadays isn't nearly as high as this, or at least, definitely not in film adaptions. If Wicked is the best musical around at this time, then I'm quite frankly shocked. They don't make musicals like this anymore.

  • @Toddy354 Have you seen Billy Elliot? It's really good in my opinion, and it only came out a few years ago. And I've heard The Book of Mormon is suppose to be really good and hilarious. Also Phantom of the Opera is still out and of course that's awesome.

  • @IsItTheBagel OHHH yeah! I've been meaning to see Billy Elliot for ages, I love the film, so I'm hoping the musical is good too. I've never heard of The Book of Mormon, I shall check it out. Not a huge Phantom fan, but each to their own:D The Hired Man is really good and that's pretty recent I think actually...

  • CULTURE brought me here.

  • glee brought me here ;]

  • Best choreography ever? Probably.

  • This is one of my favourite dance numbers in the world. I could watch it millions of times. I love how they feature Baby John in this scene and show that he can really dance. Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • I came here for a dance class, to observe dance moves.....WOOOO me!

  • I never saw Glee...So Thumbs Up

  • I love West Side Story and Grease :)

  • Thumbs up if you're a girl and you totally want to play Riff. :D

  • the best ensemble dance numbers ever filmed....... Glee tried

  • I have to say I watched west side story awhile ago and instantly loved this song. And Mike Chang totally killed this performance on glee also!

  • I've been a WSS fan for years and no rendition or homage will ever compare to the original.

However, I also watch Glee and although it's been boring me lately, I have to give Harry Shum Jr. credit for his effort. I don't think any other character could've done it, and not just bcuz he's the resident twinkle toes. It suited him perfectly.

There are a lot of purists in the arts but they need to get off their pedestals and appreciate that pop culture is helping to bring back the classics.

  • @VampireMadonna A wise comment.

  • @VampireMadonna I completely agree, of course it helps that I find Harry Shum Jr. totally attractive anyway. That being said, you also do need to give Glee props that they did the original and not basing it off the movie. Not that the above song done by Ice wasn't awesome, it's just good to do a tribute to the actual original musical. My friend and I saw Phantom of the Opera live and she hated it because "it wasn't like the movie". I hit her >.<

  • Michael Jackson-Bad...

  • I've read about how hellish this was to shoot, for all involved, and the girls in this scene didn't even get screen credits. But wow, did it pay off. Best sequence in the movie, and the movie is full of good sequences. So emotional and intense, really bringing the whole IDEA of expressing story through dance and music into full fruition. It's a triumphal scene. I thought Mike Chang did a good job, but his version, charged as it was, doesn't hold a candle to the original.

  • Don't knock the Harry Shum's performance, it was amazing! He really stayed true to the source material from the cadence of the song to the choreography, while still finding ways to make this performance his own. As somebody who LOVES WSS, what Harry did was pretty amazing too

  • I'm here because I love West Side Story, not because of Glee...

  • @Gnajonsdottir what do you want a prize? it doesnt matter how you got here it just matters that you are here!

  • @renatastarzforeve21 Well... half of the new comments are about people who got here because of Glee, so I decided to say I came here because of how amazing West Side Story is, I don´t see you asking them it they want a prize for being here because of Glee...

  • got a rocket in your pocket..easy action!

  • I saw West Side Story on stage last year but I'm also a Glee fan so when I heard Glee's version I was like, "I REMEMBER THIS!" haha

  • AwesOme

  • Ew, Glee covered this song? Oh god, way to kill a good song.

  • Tucker Smith <3

  • all i get from u idiots saying that youre here for glee and because of glee, is that you all are incredibly uncultured

  • @melirose89 Okay so maybe some people are here because of Glee but that doesn't mean they didn't know West Side Story before. And even if they didn't you should be happy that Glee introduces this amazing music to younger generations. :)

  • @melirose89 don't be a prick.

  • @Deadman6990 you must be here for glee ;)

  • Thumbs up if you came here after listening to Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang on Glee) sing this. =)

  • Harry Shum Jr FREAKING KILLED IT! I bet his dancing is gonna be even more epic!!

  • Im here because of Glee!

  • So nobody else thinks this scene is absolutely humiliating, the most embarassing thing they've ever witnessed? I love the movie, but I'd like to nuke this scene.

  • Ahh.. True Broadway. Warms my soul.

    ActionXAnybodys4eva!

  • No wonder Mike Chang's singing Cool, this has just as much vocal quality

  • EASY, ACTION

  • Omfg Mike must sing this

  • I can just imagine Mike Chang singing and dancing to this. I CAN'T WAIT NEXT WEEK! But even before I heard that this was gonna be on Glee, I ALWAYS LOVED WEST SIDE STORY! <3

  • Real Cooooooooooooooooool~~~~ I've been ordered to sing this at school OMG :D

  • this is my favorite number from this show.

  • Mike from Glee is going to sing this.

  • apparently wne they made this video the guy who plays baby john fainted once and he had to be rushed to hospital cause he got hypothermia because it was is warm were they filmed it and they instuntly went outside were it was cold to cool down

  • At least Michael's Bad isn't gay... xD

  • Before there was Michael Jackson.....

  • SPLITS. THEY DID SPLITS!

    This is cool. :)

  • This the culmination of masterful coreography with cinematography; probably one of the best in filming history.

  • This the culmination of masterful coreography with cinematography; probably one of the best in filming hisory.

  • We talked about that in school, this is by far the best song of the whole musical! :D

  • Mike Chang is apparentally doing this <3

  • thanks so much for posting these, with subtitles!!! I'm going to be using them in my English classes, fun 50's/60's slang

womb to tomb, riff, womb to tomb tony!!

  • @RemulakArisen shut up!

  • This is probably one of the best scenes ever. I love how dramatic it is. Does ANYONE else want to learn this? The choreography is amazing.

  • @MonsoonWinds6 Me and the band i play in are learning the dance and how to play the music, we are almost done.

  • @crazyfamily57 I am so jealous!!!! I think I may have to get some people together and learn it. =)

  • @MonsoonWinds6 Just remember it's not as easy as you think.

  • @crazyfamily57 Yeah, i know! They are professional dancers after all. And if you want to redo it you should probably have a little experience ;)

  • @crazyfamily57 To MonsoonWinds6 - you and the band are learning the dance AND how to play the music?? Wow, that is awesome! Good for you!

  • @Sunny105121 Thanks! We worked really hard...

  • pretty sure that the description of this song is wrong...They are not trying to play it cool after Riff's death...considering Riff sings in this song...

  • @Emmy1615 Rif is dead!

  • What ever happened to Tucker Smith.

  • Also, the COOLEST SNAPPIN' EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the best part of a great movie! Tucker Smith in those tight-ass Chinos=Damn!!!!!! And the best part of this song/dance number is when they all squeeze 2-gether, dance 2-togrther for a few seconds all squeezed 2-gether and then they all jump in the air at the same damn time!!!!!!!!!! How did they do that???? Can you believe this awesome is 50 years old????? It'll still be a classic when it's 100!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • got a rocket in your pocket?

    it's no Leonard Coen.

  • coz im BAD!!!

  • Comment removed

  • The guy who plays A-rab here played Baby John in the original Broadway run. He became a major choreographer himself after this movie.

  • @RemulakArisen lol i showed this comment to my dad and me and him were cracking up!!

  • @technoman232 Then your father is a moron and no surprise, he raised a moron as well. Hands down, the greatest musical ever written!

  • scary cinematography

  • Ice(Tucker Smith)is so damn sexy. His eyes are just incredible, especially in that retreat into shadows crouching shot, you can see his eyes like a caged animal. Fantastic

  • @zona999 Same here. I read that the role of "Ice" was specifically written for the film to ensure Tucker Smith was in the cast. He was talented. Sadly he passed away in 1988.
