  • Does ths work for motorcycle tires as well?

  • @jasonsps78 It will work on motorcycle tires with white letters or narrow white walls, but even I do NOT recomend it. Even though I haven't had a single problem with this method, it's just not worth the risk on a bike. Losing a tire on a car is one thing, losing a tire on a bike means seruius injury or death.

  • If you do do this be very F#@&^% careful...if you buff into the actual black compound (not the veneer over the white but the actual Black Sidewall) you will have initiated a crack in the sidewall, so make sure you stop just below the veneer/sidewall junction. Also if you don't buff smoothly then you will have initiated 1000000 cracks into the white compound. And last but not least, the black/white interface will turn yellow quickly because the black still has (hopefully) 6PPD. Not worth it.

  • video looks backwards. like as if he is grinding the white wall off the tire to the black under neath rather than the black off to the white underneath.

  • really man, :D cool

  • Thats sum cool shit, can u do that with any tires or just white wall?

  • @Ruben254h Only with tires that have white letters or a narrow white wall already.

  • ooh hillbilly technology..neat

  • Did he say it takes a few hours? The video was only like 6 minutes long !!!! HOW DOES HE DO IT

  • @612ZtoMhS

you my friend are a complete idiot

  • @RRReid294 well as long as we're friends thats all that matters :')

  • Haha, im kinda disappointed. You have to start with a tire that has some white to begin with.

  • cara como faz isso?

  • wont the white fall out of the rest of the tire

  • that is awesome mate

  • Nicely done on the tutorial! I have a 63 Thunderbird that could really use some fat whitewalls. Thanks for taking the time to make this!

    Cheers!

  • fantastic video, I really have always liked white walls.

    Thom in Scotland.

  • GREAT SAVE OLD TIRES thank you jjdbeagles

  • Could this be done without a powered tool? Say, with sandpaper...? 8D

  • @Commando303X Yes, but it will take you a REALLY long time.

  • Would this work on both sides of the tire? Or just one...

  • I don't know man, something about grinding the outside of my tire that scares the shit out of me. I think I'll just buy 'em.

  • the best way to make sure its perfectly round is by doing the exact same process, but have the wheel spinning on the back of your car while on a hoist or jack. just let it run in 1st gear by itself, far better result.

  • dumb question, does a 400-6 wheelbarrow tires have hidden whitewalls? i am customizing my club wagon that has wheelbarrow tires on them and was wondering if they have hidden whitewalls in them

  • @SpiritsoftheWolf

Only if the tire already has white letters or a narrow white wall. If the tire is all black, you're out of luck.

  • @JeffTanko, hahaha, that's what i figured, wasn't sure, owell, guess i'll have to make my own whitewall.... by spray paint

  • @SpiritsoftheWolf

There are some paints that work fairly well. I've had decent results with the Krylon Fusion, although it checks up over time.

  • @JeffTanko my dad has a caprice wagon with same engine as yours and it has a mechanical rad fan but also has a smaller electric fan on left side of rad but doesnt turn on .motor is good on fan but never turns on by itself,do you know what its for or why it wont turn on?

  • @cagonesss Sounds like he's got the towing package(being a wagon of course). The towing packages came with a mechanical fan instead of the standard twin electrics. I think, and I may be wrong, that the small electric fan is just an auxiliary fan that will only kick on if the engine gets way to hot. If the car isn't overheating, don't worry to much about it. Check out Impalassforum dot com for confirmation, it's a very knowledgeable forum, and they have an extensive wagon sub-forum.

  • the same effect can be achieved by trying to tightly park next to a high jagged curb on a narrow steet over a few years. :)

  • I'd rather pay the 1000 for new tires...

  • Ehh, won't you have a blow-out with weakened tires??

  • @wurft

When done correctly, this process DOES NOT weaken the tire. A tire's strength comes from the steel belts and cords in it's casing, not from the rubber. This is also the exact same process that that manufacturers use when they make wide white walls in production, I'm just doing it by hand.

  • Jeff , Was looking into putting 24s on my Cadillac El Dorado , But I want a white wall look on there with a 2 inch tire ... You think by any chance anyone makes tires like this or how would i go about getting this accomplished ?

  • i guess everyone to there own ,white wall tyres never really caught on out side of america ,i guess they look good on some cars, but would look a bit silly on others ,but anyway fair play to you for saving yourself some money ,good luck!

  • i dont care what anyone says, they need to make whitewall tires a fuckin standard on cars again.

  • Jeff, wondering if you have tires for sale ?

  • Jeff, wondering if you have tires for sale ?

  • @stonemusic23

No, I do not make or sell these for anything, just for my personal use.

  • throw it in a wheel and set the car up on jack stands let the car turn the tire so all you do is sit and grind!!!

  • If you don't wanna put the time into making your own white wall tires where's a good place that you could buy some for your modern car?

  • @KingDD3 Coker tire and Kelsey tire are good sources for factory made wide white walls. They carry both modern radial wide white walls and old style bias plys.

  • thats exactly what i want to do, take a saw to my tire. :D

  • Hey thanks for helping real rat rodders save some money. Rat rod is about looking good with what you've got and what you can scrounge up. good job.

  • @stopglobalswarming YEAH MON! i just painted my rims red on my 77' chevy pickup. i looked up the price on the wide white wall tires...yikes. man. i love this youtube

  • Wow. Great job!!!

  • Never set the grinder down on the disk!!!!!!! Always lay the grinder on its side........

  • Thumbs up if white wall tires will come back!

  • I like your hair very much!

  • whyd i watch this.....i cant even drive

  • Can you grind the tires if they are still mounted on the rim? Or is it better to remove them from the rim?

  • @kreapz I've found it's easier off the rim, but it can be done on the rim. You've got to be careful not to hit the wheel.

  • You Are A Legend Only If I Had Your Tools. I Got 2 & 1/2 Inch White Wall Tires. They Cost $185 A Piece

  • if you lift the back if the car up with the tyer on the rim start the engine put it in geer and while it is spinning run your grinder on the tyer and you will have a smooth finish just make shure you care is sicure

  • wow, times are tough down in the trailerhood. lol

  • Ha Ha Ha, ghetto whitewalls, I love it!

  • is that even safe??

  • Very Kool. You're quite an Artist :o)

  • @njguyzz21 well said good sir iv seen it my self..

JEFF!!! you are amazing im gettin a grinder to my tires tomorow im gunna have wide whites on an acura integra!!! allready got 14 inch steelies that are red!!! gunna look sick!

  • Haha. Yeah being able to see through the disc is really useful.

  • the edges arent straight enough, looking at the tire goin down the road youd get dizzy lol

  • Man! Once you stop talking and get started with those tools, you are QUICK!

  • Thats sweet

  • @jefftanko chek my video when you have a chanse

  • awesome!

  • fuck man, i don't care what anyone says, this is a bad idea.

drive it on the back of a trailer for a classic car show or something, yes, drive it round town at a low speed at your own risk (and other peoples), but definitely don't do any long distance and/or high speed driving on these things...

To be honest, it probably wont blow out, but that's no guarantee. That 64th of an inch is there for a reason. Otherwise the tyre company would save the pennies. Make sure the white is rubber not canvas

  • @rkelsey2702 Hey kelsey, I have know guys who have done this for years and have searched the net as well. None of them have ever had a blow out, nor can I find anyone on the net that said they had one. I don't believe it's anymore dangerous than tires that have been curb burned down to the white. In reality, I believe that the tire company put the white on the tire so they wont have to change the production on the line. The black is there to just cover it. Otherwise, why put the white at all?

  • wow man that turned out pretty nice. Smart, too.

  • Good video I wouldn't listen to all the negative comments people have been cutting whitewalls forever. Unless you go way too deep this is fine your always

Gonna have a chicken shit telling you your not safe fuck em!!!!'

  • white walls are for jobbers!

  • the question i was thinking is why the hell not just buy a tire with a white wall. they do still make them. then no smelling like shit after

  • $800 VS. $60 and a few hours time is why.

  • @JeffTanko I am a tire dealer... and FINDING wide white wall suppliers is almost impossible

  • @JeffTanko actually 150$ in australia..

  • @repostlouis314 True but their EXREMELY expensive and plus those expensive ones kinda fade away fast..

  • @repostlouis314 for one thing because they don't make 'm in many sizes.....I've been looking for some 215/50 17's for days now, nada!

  • @repostlouis314 if u ask that question....then why are u watching this video.

  • This is a really neat idea. I'm about to buy A 1950 dodge, i was looking sat coker tire thinking "How in the hell am i gonna pay for those, about $200 each tire.(and up) Im headin to the junkyard tomorrow for sure. Thanks man!

  • sweet grinder disk, what brand is that? mmm.. Im a girlie who likes good tools!

    nice.

I know you are demo-ing but I hope thar normally you wear at least a articulate mask. I was an aviation structures mechanic and have gotten very ill from not using proper gear... just passing the word... so if anyone trys this at home, be smart.. this is the kind of stuff that can mess up your lungs.

  • very cool, do all tires have an underlying white layer or just the ones with a white stripe? OR any tire with white lettering?

Imagine some white walled BFG all terrains, that would be really funny!

  • The tire MUST have white already showing, either a raised white letter or narrow white wall. If you don't see white, there is none there.

  • can this be done on motorcycle tires?????

  • I DO NOT recomend this process for motorcycle tires. Although unlikley, if a car tire were to blow out, you'd have a chance to get to the side of the road safely. If a motorcycle tire blows out, you can very easily end up dead. Bike tires are subjected to loads that car tires are not. Even I wouldn't try it on a bike tire.

  • nice mad skill bro

  • just remember burning rubber is one of the last things you want to be inhaling.

  • Tires are the last point of contact. The only thing i would do with your tires is hang em by a rope off a tree! $800 aint to much when you consider what happens to a classic car/truck when cornering at speed and a blow out or delam occurs. Agree to disagree.

  • Good if you dont plan on driving your car! What a tight ass!

  • I average 20,000 miles a year on this car. Good for you if you want to spend $800 on tires. Personally, I'd rather put it towards something else.

  • awesome!!! I want to do this on my Park Avenue!

  • great video jeff this will sure save me tons of money on white walls thanx a lot man.

  • what a hassle

  • A few hours of my time is worth conciderably less than the $600 extra I'd spend on "real" whitewalls.

  • Would this work on something like the Bridgestone Accolade Motorcycle Tire?

  • that seems kinda sketchy....doesnt it weaken your tire?

  • The strength on the tire comed from the cords or belts(as in "steel belted radial"), NOT the rubber. The rubber has almost no strength by it's self, and you're only removing a very small amount of it.

  • i used a 36 grid disc for the grinder and 80 grid sand paper on my orbital sander

  • I tried it on my own by watchin your video and i used a 36 grid disc on the grinder and after i was done there were alot of black swirls how can i get em off cause the snaders not takin em off?

  • If the sander is not removing the black swirls, you may have ground to deep and are hitting the black layer under the white one. What grit are using on your sander following the grinder?

  • cool, i love retro look of white walls, not the tiny strip, but the big true walls. this would look beautiful on a reproduction 0f any 1930-1970-s model, or an original if i could ever afford one.

  • thats kinda cool but i have a faster, easier, safer, cleaner way to do this...

all you need is a paint brush and some white paint.

    try that next mr.redneck...lol

  • I've yet to find a paint that won't either crack, flake, peel, or yellow. There is no paint that will last on a car that's actually driven.

  • it will last you long enough untill the time you will change your tires if you dont drive in water, cold conditions, rocky or dirt or any off road train.

  • whats with the disrespect?

  • how did i disrespect you???

  • dude u should wear a gas mask while burning up all that rubber that shit could fuck u up!

  • good info though!!

  • Most women do this naturally by the way they park, always scraping into the curbs when they park - ever see a woman who owns an SUV and has the lettering on the side of her tires - typically, that lettering gets all scraped off until you just see a white ring around her tire. ANYONE know what I'm talking about?

  • @njguyzz21 yep I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. lol

  • @njguyzz21

    HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • @njguyzz21 yup, and i always was wondering how that could happen, turns out...well, you see how.

  • @njguyzz21 hahahah !not just the tire! also the bumper, doors...

  • thats kinda cool.

haha i wouldnt trust the tire under load and pressure, but i'd definately try this some time!

  • Where can I find these grinding discs with holes?

  • Don't Know. Mine are leftover from years ago. I think 3M and Norton make a similar product.

  • I tried this and it worked ok! I decided to buy blemish tires online, which worked out much better. when i did the technique on a white letter tire, it worked great, except for the unevenness of the white band itself. the whitewall tires i used next were not good. the whitewalls ended up being sort of a crown on the sidewall, which was tough to even out and make even. the blem tires i bought online were pretty perfect, plus they were $48. let me know if you want to know the web address.

  • cool vid, i wanna try that on some old white letter BF radial TAs

  • put these bitches on a 64 impala

  • LOL

  • dude seriusly, put gold dayton rims inside them and bolt them on a low rider =D

  • HELL YEA

  • ive got a Triumph Bonneville (cafe racer style) and wouldl ove to have white wallks on them!

..dont think they are white under tho :(

    good post anyway :)

  • I buff white walls for a livin.

does anyone know where i can buy a machine?

  • thats nice

  • thanks man building a trike and will work great

  • thats really nice man

  • PIMPING

  • hi, they looks great

one thing but, seeing the tyres still have the stickers on them and heaps of tread - i think they are brand new - not old and crusty as u say

  • I assure you, they are from a salvage yard. They are low mile take off tires from wrecked vehicles. I get them from Star Autp Parts in Janesville, WI, and average around $15 per tire. If you'd like, I can e-mail you a picture showing the reminants of the blue marker on the sidewalls that the yard uses to label them. The tag on the one tire lables it as mine since I call ahead to have them pulled when I get them. New tire stickers are also much more rectangular than the tag on this one.

  • my apologies then mate

  • so to do this to a regular tire would not work cause its all black underneath .. i need to ask for a narrow white wall or raised white letter tire is that correct .. also are these hard to come by for a VW Beetle ?

has anyone done this just like the video ?

  • Comment removed

  • what kind of tires do i need?

  • I had no idea all that white was there in a tire o.0!!!

  • i had no idea either, i figured someone would find this interesting and useful, now are you going to turn your Lincolns White walls into wide whites? :) i am just wondering if my new tires, there 31" DOMINATOR A/S tires, they have OWL Outer White Letters, i am wondering if there is white rubber under the black inserts? then i can make them look like RWL Raised White Letters?

  • I'm considering it, but idk how it would look, probably cool as hell :) I' m gonna take a side pic of my Lincoln & then take it to the paint program & see how they would look :)

  • Cool.

Grinders & my 11 lbs Sledge Hammer,

    are my favorite tools!

I've got Snow tires on my old Mustang II

    & use it for off-road.

    Deo Vindice!

  • As my response three comments up states, no, the sidewall MUST have white showing on it.

  • do thay become yellow ??

  • All whitewalls will yellow eventually if they aren't cared for. The sets I've done have stayed white, but I scrub them clean using "Bleech-White" a few times a year.

  • do they have to have a white ring already?

can it be done on plain black tires?

  • They MUST be narrow white wall, or raised white letter tires. All black tires will NOT work.

  • yeah its look ugly and the silicone become yellow ^_^

  • what about using white Silicone?

its easy to use & easy to remove..

  • If it sticks to the rubber it might work ok. You might have trouble getting it on smooth enough so that it looks nice.

  • For some reason I can't help to agree with the tire guys. Those tires have those layers for a reason as insignificant as it seems that layers is there for a reason. Why not buy the white wall inserts?? A set of four set you back about 40-50 dollars. You cant even tell that those are inserts. I have a VW Bug and those things are used alot. Plus you save time and labor.

  • Again, this is how white walls are made at the factory, we're just doing it by hand. The strength of the tire comes from it's cords and belts, not the rubber. I personally will never use those inserts or "Port-O-Walls". They are made for stiff sidewall bias ply tires. Because of the amount that radials flex, they will eventually wear grooves deep into the sidewall. They also have a history of flying apart at highway speeds when they start to age.

  • i think i will do it by a razor

  • I can't recomend that. It may work, but it would be difficult and time consuming, not to mention dangerous. You obviously would do that at your own risk. A better solution would be to sand it by hand with course sand paper. Using a blade just seems like a bad idea.

  • oh man i love it

but can i do it by rising the car by a jack and make a Friction between the tire and knife or some thing? cause i don`t have these stuff.......and thax.

  • pretty cool if you have a unfinished project that you are looking to see if white walls will look any good on it.

  • I can't drive....25

  • Have you had any failure on the road or anything this is very interesting

  • It's pretty neat if your not gonna drive on them alot but for daily drivers this dude is fuckin stupid. I am a tire tech at a local National Tire and Battery, and belive it or not that 1/64th of an inch is there for a reason. Scientist and highly skilled pros design most tires and thats why there made how they are. You start to fuck with them then they start blowing out. You can do it if you want but what the fuck ever.

  • "I am a tire tech at a local National Tire and Battery"

But he is the one who "is fuckin stupid", LOL

  • 10 bucks remember... there worn out any ways what do you expect.. 1/64th of an inch is not going to matter much

  • " I am a tire tech " aka I can spin lugs and take a tire off. " Derrr that 1/64th was put there by a scientist ma ". Your parents must be proud.

  • wow tomorrow Im going to buy a load of old tires at the junkyard and make them a whitewall to sell on ebay!

  • Making them to sell might not be the best idea. If a tire ever fails for any reason at all, you will likely take the blame because you "modified" it.

  • wow

  • interesting

  • WOW THANKS HARLEYBAYO

  • if i saw black through my white wall i would throw that tire away!!!

  • Great tutorial!!

  • dees that work for any tire?? Even super low pro?

  • As long as the tire has white letters or a narrow white wall, it will work. with a low pro, you will probably want to practice on a junk tire first because the white stripe under the black may not be very consistant leaving you with a wavy white wall. As always, you do it at your own risk.

  • Well this one beats the kid I seen painting the white on his tires with a brush..

  • That is awesome!

  • I work for a tire plant in MT vernon call general tire/ continal tire north america only if they new they could just take the tires that have bad with side wall letters that are either chewed up to much from the grinder they could sell those and make money but we scrap them they need to see this video and relize they could sell thim as wide with wall's

  • thank you

  • tyre treds does it in hayward.(510)581-3378

  • Tried it and it works! Thanks Jeff!
