I found this film very moving, most wonderful, Mr. Garcia was a revelation in it. Never allow hypercritical idiots who wouldn't know a piece of art if they tripped over one to tell you what to think about a book, a movie, a painting, etc. Make up your own mind about such things, art is for everyone, not just for a chosen few cultural bigots.
I know that a lot of bad things have been said about this movie and how it got so much wrong but, after seeing the movie, I looked Modigliani up and found out the facts about him, and told my child. I am not an art student or an artist and would not have known about him or to look him up with out the movie. So, good things did come out of this movie!
Uh, please keep on being polite =) And where du you say why guns and guitars should have a thing to do with Modigliani ?
It should have a thing to do with the painters who paint it. Not with Modigliani.
Why does Utrillo paint a mad ? Because he's mad. Why does an other painter paint "Mexico" ? Because he likes Mexico. Why does Modigliano paint Jeanne ? Because he love her.
It is not Modigliani's paintings where there are guitars and guns, so no problem >__>
Diego Rivera did not paint Mexico because he "liked Mexico" but because it was his culture.
But throwing everything together in some collage just shows the film maker has no idea what to say...throw it all in a soup and hope it looks good..but it's a pretentious attempt to look artsy someone who knows little about Modigliani; misses basic facts ...like Modigliani never used easels. Nothing to say except artists are so Bohemian.
I'll be in Paris in 3 days to see the DeChirico show at the Modern.
Been reading a lot about Modi and when I saw he did not use an easel I laughed because I NEVER use one myself.
Just don't like them. Don't know why he didn't; maybe to keep the paint from running. If one has a cliche view then all artists paint with fury at their easels like weasels.
New York Times; "The best and maybe the only use to be made of the catastrophic screen biography "Modigliani" is to serve as a textbook outline of how not to film the life of a legendary artist."
Ouch, the critic of the NYT is... unkind ! But it is the problem with movies that want to tell the great characters' lives : cliches, wrong interpretations, liberties taken with regard to the truth...
But don't you think it is - as far as the other qualities that a movie should have are concerned (actors' performance, music, image, lights...) - don't you think it is a beautiful movie ?
I have studied the period in Paris from the time and it connects in no way with all that I've read and seen.
I object to trying to add fake drama to a story that is primarily about painting. Picasso did not compete with Modigliani. Picasso liked Modi and Modi liked Picasso's work. And the big fat actor playing Picasso looks so different than Picasso...too much so.
Hate the 21st Century stylings. Just does not work. The music should have been Satie...not Synth Pop drivel.
In the bonus of the movie, the actor playing Picasso explains why he's not less fat.
The fact that Picasso and Modigliano respected and liked what the did is showed in the film, I think.
What I know about Paris -but above all- Montmartre corresponds to what we see in the movie. Conclusion : I don't know a lot of things about Montmartre at that time, what a pity !
The song is by Sasha Lazard - Ode To Innocence (Ave Maria - Modigliani.) I purchased it on Amazon, Sasha Lazard CD 'The Myth of Red'. It's a great song!
Picasso, Rivera, Modigliani... All the greatest paintors of the last decade were there in Paris at the right time and this film offers a great portrait of Modigliani as he was, thanks to the script and all the marvellous magic of this picture but also because of the magnigicent play role of maximo actor Andy García!
I loved the movie and the music too and wonder if there is a soundtrack for the film

Grande Modi! me sigues inspirando y te siento vivo... Grazie!

Anyon e doing simple basic research on Modigliani knows;
he didn't use an easel.
Baloney about art. Everywhere you look.
There is not a guitar in any of his paintings and what's up with the guns and other bullshit?
Rexicano 2 years ago
What guitar ? Picasso's ?
What guns ? Some Modigliani's friend's ?
Think one minute, it is not Modigliani's guitar and guns, it is not for his paintings, are you stupid ? --'

If you don't see all the bullshit thrown in here; then you are BLIND.
Yes, there are guitars...guns... and all the nonsense I mentioned....and none of it having a thing to d with Modigliani.
OK? Now go fuck off, retard.
