@sullivanj93 You really don't know how the voice works, do you? You really should do some research before you go trolling on youtube next time. When I was 16 I had easy b's above your notes, we get it - your voice hasn't completely changed yet. Her voice, just like the rest of ours, won't be settled into her for years. Those are fairly high notes - not extreme, but on the higher end instandard repertoire and the length of those notes depends on how she wants to do it.
Agreed. You have a great voice, so why imitate someone else? I don't even think Kristin Chenoweth's voice is suited for this "comedy aria" anyway. Brava!
people are so mean...you've done a great job..this is hard stuff and you're doing good. i'm sure you're even better now =-) its all about always growing and thats what i say to any musician i see is never become complacent so as long as you're continuing to mature musically you're in the right place...forget the haters lol
Can definitely tell that you're a Cheno fan! I love your voice. So rarely you come across a natural voice this beautiful! It seems to flow so effortlessly from you! Love it!!
Have you seen the score of the song? It is definately high! Very Very difficult technically, and her voice is EXACTLY where it needs to be, in my opinion. BRAVO!
I think it is an aria not for your age, although it lacks a little more mature, but you have very good voice nor doubt that, congratulations, just be careful when getting on and you hear a scream unpolished near the end of the piece . a kiss from guadalajara mexico.
I think that this is a lovely version of the piece you did a really great job especially for your age at the time. However, your definition of Coloratura soprano is inaccurate...
Thanks everyone for your Opinions and comments, I take everything into consideration - I was 19 at the time actually I am 22 now :) I may post up some new Videos I'm actually working on a piece called Moonfall, Some Marriage of Figaro pieces, and some lieder.
I thought you were good, and I LOVED the 'pearls and ruby rings' talking part. But the beginning was a little too fast. And the 'ha ha ha' part was too slow. You should also not do it exactly like Kristen Chenoweth.
Vocally, it's very good. But your actions are incredibly distracting. The coloratura passages were REALLY slow and there seemed to be a LOT of improvisation with regard to pitch near the end of the song. But overall I liked it.
hmmm...this is a combination of kristen chenoweth and diana damrau, speaking of the performance, not vocally. you are really quite good. i don't really know your age, but no matter how old you are, you are obviously gifted and extremely talented. please study vocal performance, if you don't already. i say this because i had a friend in high school who was this good and she majored in international law....a tragic loss for the world of opera.
How the heck do you even REACH an E flat? I mean that as a sincere question! I think that's amazing! I top out around a d flat..and that's on a good day!
The gestures are completely distracting. And what is going on when she sings France? She sounds like she's been overcome by nausea. Other than that it's quite good.
Great job!!! There's a short part near the end where the accompanist is kind of off. But you did great! It's hard to compare to someone like Kristin Chenoweth but you did a really good job!
You need to work on shaping your vowels a little. The "haha" sections were a bit draggy but I think that was more the accompanist's fault than yours. But overall very well done
Fabulous! One of the best on youtube! This young lady rivals some pros! If any critique, I would say, her acting needs to be "grounded" more. Too much haphazzard movement. I applaud this performance and she is magnificent!!
Not bad at all! On with my critique...I would of loved to hear you connect the phrases more. Also, instead of bashing those high notes out maybe float them a little more? It was a bit brute IMO. Maybe a little more gentle with the same amount of energy and volume? Your intonation I suspect is excellent. Continue to work on your technique and legato.
PS: KristinKewi, even the best singers could improve on a few things, and all musicians are aware of their weak areas and are working to fix them. The point is to give each other positive encouragement (which can include advice on how to fix specific mistakes), instead of being all cocky and posting 'nice try' under everybody's videos.
Your voice is lovely, and you sing this song with great confidance. There are always people who criticize others in an effort to look superior, but are simply just pretentious. Ignore them. Your voice is not too heavy or too anything. Nowhere is it written that there is only one right voice. I would say there are two immediate areas of improvement; Gestures-less is more, and Vowel placement-more vertical. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
Enjoyable instrument to listen to. I would love to hear your voice on some more lyrical-esque pieces such as, "Dove Sono" or even somthing like, "Come Scoglio". My only criticism is that your high notes seem pushed as if you weren't allowing enough air to pass through the vocal folds in fear of not attaining the notes while in such a high tessitura. Work it out, and keep up the good work!
You have a truly lovely voice. Can't wait to hear more from you in the future. I'm sure that as your voice matures, your performances will get even better.
I don't like your acting, but you have a good voice. Since I don't know all the details of technique, I can't critique it or say I can find anything wrong with it, for the most part. I didn't really like the way the "ha-ha"s were done at the end, but other than that, I thought it sounded pretty, at least.
i'm an opera major in college and i have to say, as a fellow coloratura, this performance was rather great! you definitely have the voice, it's a beautiful one and true coloratura. as for these other people, HAH that's all i have to say.. jealous wannabes. you're still young and your voice needs to mature. don't let any of these people get to your head, as long as you think you did awesome then who cares what anyone else thinks. keep up the great work and good luck in the long run! =]
Whew, some of the comments here are incredibly elitist and catty; then again, some of them offer very constructive criticism. // Either way, I give you credit for opening yourself up like this.
So this performance was not Kristen Chenoweth or Natalie Dessay, but you're clearly talented. Never forget that.
I, too, am interested in your degree(s) and where you've gone to school.
well...that was a nice effort. I'll give you props for having the courage to perform it, but I don't think you should be performing this again until you work out some technical issues (the runs were all over the place...try cleaning them up a bit) and perform it in front of the mirror a bunch of times. You're gestures are awkward. Try some that are more real. E for effort :)
THat was good- I was suprised. The only issue is breath support at the end and there was realy only one flat note...but it seemed like you were holding back a bit. That is a big song and you need to give a big performance.
You obviously thought about this aria for a long time...you do need to focus more on the lifting the soft palette and breath support...keep up the good fight!
No offense your voice is pretty but this song is simply not for you. I take voice lessons and you are trying to hard. and you get off key in the high notes and your sliding needs work.
there are a few rough moments, but they are blown away by the fact that you're one of maybe 10 people on earth who can sing this. I really liked it. You have excellent control over your vobrato.
you did amazing..i think tho..you kinda KRISTIN CHENOWETHED IT UP TOO MUCH when you said france..but you are simply amazing..and yessss Phantom would be great for you too
You naturally have a beautiful voice, but you really really need to work on your technique. Are you taking lessons? I can't understand a word you're saying, at times your pressing and forcing the sound flat, and you're runs are very muddy.
I want to learn this song, but I've only been taking voice for a little over three years, so I'm afraid I'll just get frustrated with my lack of speed, etc. How long have you been taking lessons? P.S. I really loved your phantom song, too!
Er... you have a gorgeous voice, but I don't think you're a coloratura. Your voice is just too heavy; more like a lyric. Not to mention you didn't sound comfortable in that tessitura. I'd love to hear you sing Dove sono or something though.
(sorry... i'm brazilian and my english isn't very good, but i think it will be bether that if i write in portuguese)
So... how old are you? you seem to be too young for sing this aria... i mean... not just young, but also imature... Since when you had singing classes? Have you done already old arias, Haendel, Bach, Mozart (NOT "The magic Flute", but the "INAS": DespINA, ZerlINA, MarcellINA, etc), lieder? It prepers you for sing...
While it's clear you have a wonderful instrument, you need to continue your study of the voice. In addition, please taking some acting classes. Your movements are redundant and very closed. If I were grading you in a jury you would come in short. This rates a C. Intonation problems, body alignment all over the place and some definite vowel work needs to be done.
I am a coloratura Schicchi, but I am only a 20 year old Coloratura. I did not say I am going to be the next Beverly Sills. I am starting the Queen of the Night. I already started it, I never said I perfected it. I have the speed and the notes of a coloratura. I am also not a full dramatic yet.
Where you do have a wonderful voice, MUCH work is still in store for you. You shouldn't be singing arias until you are ready to sing them. And this clearly shows that you weren't ready judging from the lack of control in the higher tessatura. I recommend a huge improvement in the acting instead of copying what Kristen Chenoweth did. Your acting was very fidgety and quite annoying to watch. However, best of luck to.
Wow! this is incredible, with you every step of the way with this video! Incredible! Keep up the singing! I love this song, I can only sing it after warming up for about...an hour! Great job!
Wow. For one of the hardest songs in the entire musical theater canon, that was freakin' great. Be proud of your voice, and work on your gestures, but mostly be proud of your voice.
My gosh! Youre the Glitter and Be Gay girl! I listened to your video some time ago but apparently didnt comment. I dont know why....youre AWESOME! I totaly love your voice and I love how you sing with such emotion and expression.
I love the ease in your voice in the beginning, but it seemed like you really tightened up on some of the high notes and lost vibrato. My only other problem was your gesturing was kinda sketchy in parts and it distracted from the song rather than adding to it. But hey, there's no denying you've got talent :)
You have a great instrument there. Just focus on opening up veritcally. It's the habit of high voiced singers to depend on strident and bright soundings to kind of constrict the tone into being higher.
Also, as far as the acting side of it goes, just fill in the blank spots between verses/lines with just as much feeling as you have when you're speaking or singing. It's really good, and your voice has some great potential. Keep studying!
All I can say is that I am profoundly impressed by your beautiful and agile voice.
Yes, it is true that it wasn't perfect, but having in count that you are very, very young, it is nothing short of impressive that you would perform with such control and high degree of precision.
I agree. She didn't say she was Joan Sutherland, but she's definitely coloratura. Her placement may be "heavy," as you put it, but she just has a nice, strong voice (with good control).
filmcomposer, her high register in this isn't in whistle. This song doesn't require whistle.
You need to take acting lessons...this was boring to watch. You're not a bad vocalist, but I'd hate to be the one to tell you that you definitely aren't a coloratura. I'm afraid your placement is far too heavy fort hat title. Keep working, though.
She may not be a coloratura (a dramatic or lyric soprano maybe?), but that doesn't mean her voice doesn't sound lovely singing this. She can hit the notes well, that's all that matters. Lets not segregate by voice type. Should sopranos never sing mezzo songs?
I am actually a Dramatic Coloratura; I was 19 years old when this was recorded. Like someone commented, I am not saying I am Joan Sutherland. I am currently working on the Queen of the Night Aria. I am only 20 and I go up to a High A flat above High C. Thanks so much for the great comments and your opinions! And for the performance being dull, I was performing this in a Church at Christmas for my voice teacher, so I apologize.
You're too young to determine your fach. Dramatic sopranos are almost as rare as a true contralto - they come along about once a generation. Just because you can sing larger concert works/arias doesn't mean you're a dramatic. Your voice needs more weight to be classified as such. Also just because you can 'hit' the high notes doesn't mean you should perform them or are ready to sing them.
YOur comments are the exact words I was looking for when I was commenting this video. Its always nice to know theres someone out there that KNOWS what they are talking about! I agreee completely!
You are very sadly mistaken if you belive that "hitting notes" is all that matters. The voice has to fit the rep., and hers does not fit. She is msot certainly not a coloratura and not a dramatic. Being able to hit an Ab does not a coloratura make. Coloratura calls for versatily and ease which she does not demonstrate.
I did not mean to imply it doesn't matter if she wants to do it PROFESSIONALLY, but for an amateur it doesn't matter. I don't think she ever claimed to be a professional (but maybe I misread something somewhere). She is in training, and (from what I understand) just did this song for fun.
Though I really don't think it matters personally if the person singing IS a true coloratura (as long as they are singing properly) unless you are talking professional productions where it is expected.
As a side note, coloratura has nothing to do with the vocal range. Keep singing!

My only other problem was your gesturing was kinda sketchy in parts and it distracted from the song rather than adding to it. But hey, there's no denying you've got talent :)

well i thought it was phenomenal...your acting is much better than mine if that makes you feel any better! haha

I absolutely love your voice... You scared the crap out of me when you suddenly turned and made that first big high note. Wow! See you at the Met!

All I can say is that I am profoundly impressed by your beautiful and agile voice.
Yes, it is true that it wasn't perfect, but having in count that you are very, very young, it is nothing short of impressive that you would perform with such control and high degree of precision.
Congratulations. You're great.

I agree. She didn't say she was Joan Sutherland, but she's definitely coloratura. Her placement may be "heavy," as you put it, but she just has a nice, strong voice (with good control).
filmcomposer, her high register in this isn't in whistle. This song doesn't require whistle.
FoxyGrandpa 5 years ago
Er... E6 is usually whistle tone.

Whistle tone would imply it's disconnected, head voice (super-head) would imply it's connected

If you can't even sing the coloratura parts in Candide up to speed, what makes you think you can handle the Magic FLute?
schicchi1160 5 years ago
You're too young to determine your fach. Dramatic sopranos are almost as rare as a true contralto - they come along about once a generation. Just because you can sing larger concert works/arias doesn't mean you're a dramatic. Your voice needs more weight to be classified as such. Also just because you can 'hit' the high notes doesn't mean you should perform them or are ready to sing them.

YOur comments are the exact words I was looking for when I was commenting this video. Its always nice to know theres someone out there that KNOWS what they are talking about! I agreee completely!
schicchi1160 5 years ago

Natalie Dessay will always be my first choice for this song, but you did phenomenally.
