I used to call this from number a public swimming pool when I was a kid (alot of places had not figured out that they needed to block 900 numbers yet!)...It was a party line...You could (sorta) hear everyone else who had just called the number...Just a bunch of kids screaming their city and cussing each other out...The 80's were awesome
@321Doggies There still are a surprising amount of 'party lines' today, most medium-to-large cities have at least one. But instead of 900 numbers they're now local calls paid for by ads they play when you call.
Two dollars a call, indeed. This commercial is better than anything mankind has done in the past 20 years. Freddie Freaker(tm) where are you in mankind's hour of desperation?
I am so glad to see this again! It's one of the funniest memories from when my younger sis shared my apartment and we worked together in the summer of '88. We both would come home from work and see this ad when it came on during MTV or Dance Party USA and think "How stupid is THIS whole concept--and this ad?" Our favorite line: "Party 'til ya drop!" How much "partying" can you do on a phone line with a bunch of strangers--"'til ya DROP"? Pathetic! Oh, and the eyes and voice at the end--too much!
Yeah AceMaster, I think there were at least a few versions. I'm 99% sure that the one I saw all the time was "1-900-409-FREAK," because that's the way I've been singing it all these years. I used to have a VHS tape devoted to it, labeled "FREAK PHONE" on the side with a stern warning never to tape over it. I remember sitting there watching MTV all day just waiting for the commercial to come on so I could record it.
I popped it in the tape a few years ago and it had been taped over. :(
thanks, I've been waiting for someo ne to post this. it seems a little different than I remember, I wondor if there is a different version. I thought "$2 a call" was in a goblin voice.
I remember calling 1-900-909-FREAK to talk to a stupid dancing character called "Freddy Freaker" who did a dance called... you won't believe this... the Freak! Seriously. It was some recorded moron telling really bad jokes.

At the end there is some kind of blurred message about a $2 call to Starwest Entertainment and L.A. Toys.
