The time was the early 70s and the Vietnam war was still going on. I think the producers of this remake were trying to connect this to the horrors of the time.
@chantalbernard I wouldn't presume the producers were so parochial or myopic. They were artists, too, and more likely embraced the oppotunity to address universal themes thus lending to the timeless appeal of a classic.
