But, I love the whole grandiose, wall-of-sound structure of the song. And I also greatly appreciate the concept-- reminds me a lot of a George Orwell novel.
Odd that previous comments dismiss this vid as "artsy." Strange, to hate artists in particular, as if businessmen were any less self-indulgent, as if making music for decades required no discipline at all.
Interesting, that Ihsahn and Ihriel aren't condoning the sorrow they portray. The usual strategy of songwriters is to confirm the rightness of others' suffering, whereas Peccatum seem to be saying that wallowing in sorrow leads to a Tamasic state: jaded sterility. Good chorus.
Eh, I think they're not outright rejecting pain, but reinforcing the need for a balance of suffering in the healthy soul: enough to inspire passion and temper the resolve, but not enough to devalue one's achievements. And yeah, the chorus more than makes up for the rest of the song. Can't stop humming it. :D
I'm not suggesting they're rejecting pain; rather, they seem to be rejecting those who consciously and repeatedly damage themselves with it. I doubt that Ihriel lacks respect for poets like Beddoes and Dowson, but it's possible her philosophy rejects their life decisions. Yeats's did.
Do understand that I'm not condemning Ihriel's POV. I'm only saying it's rare in songwriting (which only makes Peccatus more original). Try to think of another song with the line, "they deserve to suffer."

Continuing... anyway, regardless of "strength", we're feeling social animals. We can't exist without society and everyone deserves equal consideration (though not necessarily equal TREATMENT, ex: put the smart kids in advanced classes, and the "special" ones in special ed). I'd say a good motto is one for all, all for one. A society without consciousness of collectivity is as bad as one without individuality. BUT, you can't help those who won't help themselves. You can only do so much.
I look at the world in a semi-determinist way, so this obviously affects my answer. When you think about the influence of both innate talents and a person's environment, in a lot of ways people have less control over their strength and functionality. A smart person with supportive parents would do better than an average person with negligent parents in many cases. The capability for people to feel and have wants is only affected by intelligence when you get into the area of retardation.

I'm not really referring to Nietzsche although Ihsahn and a lot of BM artists are probably influenced by him. I'm talking about Emperor's philosophy as they expressed in early interviews. They clearly stated only the strong were worthy and there was no place for the weak in society.

Odd that previous comments dismiss this vid as "artsy." Strange, to hate artists in particular, as if businessmen were any less self-indulgent, as if making music for decades required no discipline at all.
Interesting, that Ihsahn and Ihriel aren't condoning the sorrow they portray. The usual strategy of songwriters is to confirm the rightness of others' suffering, whereas Peccatum seem to be saying that wallowing in sorrow leads to a Tamasic state: jaded sterility. Good chorus.

Eh, I think they're not outright rejecting pain, but reinforcing the need for a balance of suffering in the healthy soul: enough to inspire passion and temper the resolve, but not enough to devalue one's achievements. And yeah, the chorus more than makes up for the rest of the song. Can't stop humming it. :D

I'm not suggesting they're rejecting pain; rather, they seem to be rejecting those who consciously and repeatedly damage themselves with it. I doubt that Ihriel lacks respect for poets like Beddoes and Dowson, but it's possible her philosophy rejects their life decisions. Yeats's did.
Do understand that I'm not condemning Ihriel's POV. I'm only saying it's rare in songwriting (which only makes Peccatus more original). Try to think of another song with the line, "they deserve to suffer."

Continuing... anyway, regardless of "strength", we're feeling social animals. We can't exist without society and everyone deserves equal consideration (though not necessarily equal TREATMENT, ex: put the smart kids in advanced classes, and the "special" ones in special ed). I'd say a good motto is one for all, all for one. A society without consciousness of collectivity is as bad as one without individuality. BUT, you can't help those who won't help themselves. You can only do so much.

I look at the world in a semi-determinist way, so this obviously affects my answer. When you think about the influence of both innate talents and a person's environment, in a lot of ways people have less control over their strength and functionality. A smart person with supportive parents would do better than an average person with negligent parents in many cases. The capability for people to feel and have wants is only affected by intelligence when you get into the area of retardation.

IMO nobody has to do anything. the strong don't HAVE to help the weak. it'd be nice, sure, but they don't have to. however, if they want to be helped in times of need, they definitely should help other people as well.

determinism in this case we understand as a theory, that human is determined by his inherited characteristic from parents, grandparents etc.
so from this point of view you understand much more - that one is determined by two things: inherited characteristics and his own free will.
but you know - human will is sometimes very weak :) this is why i think that "stronger" should help "weaker"
but i like your opinion too

well, I guess you really can't deicide wether somebody deserves help or not, most of the time. I'm kinda a follower of the greek idea of freedom that way, as in, you could say no, but you're going to say yes anyway. But in the end, there are probably no right decision. something them are just wronger than the rest.

It's harsh. Follows in the philosophy of the strong/the elite.
All of these ways of thoughts and philosophies have some truth to them, but should all be taken with a grain of salt. Some people cannot help themselves regardless how hard they try. These people should not be ousted from society just because they are weak.

i think the song addresses the everyday/ common man as the "numb one".
the video shows how everyone has an inner-self trying to remain free.
until it eventually dies when the outer-self is subjected to conformity.
but on the point you made about strong/ weak.
i think it should be everyman for himself.
why should we cater to those who can't even help themselves?
no one caters to the strong willed people of this world, why should it be any different for the weak?

Yes, that sounds nice written on paper and it sounds fair. Everyone for themselves. But actually I think you probably agree with me. I'm sure you've had a few (or one) person in your live who you've loved dearly and would do anything for them. If one day they were to become paralyzed you would keep loving them as before. You wouldn't abandon the person just because they're weak.
Being strong is good if you're the only one. But what makes life special is love

actually my family is very detached from one another, so i couldn't say i care for any one of them in the way you suggest.
but i think in most cases people would continue caring for a paralytic under ANY circumstances.
but what i was referring to, and i think what most people refer to; are the people who are able to help themselves but do not.
the people who live "numb" lives, routine, monotonous existences.
you cannot expect help if you are unwilling to help yourself.

If you are talking about "Nietzchean" philosophy, Nietzsche never advocated a physical extermination of lesser beings. His works were abused and edited by his sister to fit the Nazi-ideology.
Friedrich Nietzsche makes it quite clear that the weak are here to justify the strong, not to be exterminated by them.

I'm not really referring to Nietzsche although Ihsahn and a lot of BM artists are probably influenced by him. I'm talking about Emperor's philosophy as they expressed in early interviews. They clearly stated only the strong were worthy and there was no place for the weak in society.
