I was asked by our Freshman orientation professor to get Matthew up for class bc he was late alot and I'm not sure why she handed me that responsibliity but I guess it's because we were both in SR dorm. I remember mostly in that limited interaction was how small he was. I was on the basketball team so at 6'3 I felt like a barbarian next to him. He seemed very gentle and kind. When I learned what happened, my first thought was what kind of monsters could these men have been to do that to him.

I did a version of this speech for competition. I could never do Mr.Shepard credit, he is man who's character is to strong and beautiful to be replicated. Does anyone know if there is a full recording of his courtroom statement out there?

This has got to be 1 of the most eloquent & highly charged speeches I have ever heard.Mr Shepard had such courage to confront his son's murderers & speak with such dignity about what Matthew meant to him.That his horrific murder has opened the world's eyes to these atrocities can only be of small comfort to the family,but it MUST tell the world,"We will NOT tolerate your hatred any longer" Mr Shepard,I applaud you & sincerely hope you have some peace! R.I.P Matthew.

@brewerschick08 We are concieved and born as homosexuals, HOPEFULLY nutured by parents like mine that didn't care, they just wanted the best for me. REAL parents will accept and teach us we had NO CHOICE because homosexuality is NOT a choice and they will fight for us, advise us, point us and act as any caring, loving parent would do! The same parents will teach us the the evils of homophobia are LEARNED, CHOSEN traits and are NOT natural.

@brewerschick08 although homophobia is sickening to me, i dont necessarily think its a choice. its a phobia, a psychological disorder. many things could factor in to creating that intolerance in a person, especially the fact that for a long time our society was greatly intolerant of homosexuals.

my skools doing this play "the laramie project" this shits sad :( his head was all deformed nd anly way u wer able to tell he was white was where his tears had been running down while he was tied up and the docter said this is how u should look if u wer driving 80 miles an hour downhill and crashed. he got hit with beer bottles nd pistle whipped just cuz he was gay he didnt fucking come onto them! this is really sad i tell my friends this story nd try to stop them cuz they make fun of gay ppl.

God is not a bullshit thing, it's just a higher power people belief in (in neutral terms)...I think you possess as much anger as those two men did, which is sad.

@XforeverlongingX i`m sure God didn`t get a chance to write the bible. i`m sure people who have claimed to be in those times&hear God wrote it. In our nation we have people who are Christians who don`t have anything against gays and we have the Christians that do. In every religion and culture, age and race either have something against gays or they don`t. It`s not God who hates gays, it`s the people who want to use God as a form of rule to say "God hates gays".

@XforeverlongingX I honestly don`t know if Matthew personally believed in a God or God, but i`m sure you don`t know that either. Matthew probably has his own views on it. We have preachers who preach for people to hate gays using the bible as a scare-tactic to get people to believe and follow. I believe in God, but i don`t fully agree with the bible knowing People wrote it. There are a lot of things i don`t agree about the Christian structure, but there are also things i do agree with.

I'm sorry but i cry every time i watch this. i was told that this is america where there is freedom, but i'm thinking to my self there is no freedom here, its only hell, i want to live as every one as equls. people don't know the harm of prop 8. really how would gay marriage effect your life? it would. so whats the deal with saying no to these people. i've meet kids who are gay and there parents kicked them out for being gay. Dennis Shepard should be proud that he can say he wanted to see Mckinney dead. This was one of the most moving speeches that I have ever heard. Most people could not say that. Everyone deserves to live, but those who choose to take life away from others.
