Messiaen made some of the most beautiful music of the 20th century, it's really nice being able to see him walking around the woods talking about birds, thanks for sharing this!
It's funny that in this clip vs. Part one he seems to have relaxed, combed his hair down, is much more sage and less lunatic. This is awesome, him so earnestly loving the bird songs.
Ok i love birds, since my childhood for today, now im an graphic artist. When ive heard his music for the first time i had a VERY STRONG FEELING, or intuition that his music is from the core of the nature, it reaches it rules of structural distribution of forms and now i see he studies the birds , what a beautifull meeting mr Messiaen!!!

To base music off of bird song is completely ignorant. All of his music sounds the same. It's a bunch of jumbled up, go nowhere serialist garbarge. Absolute shit is what actually what it is.

Melody cannot exist without rhythm, so that doesn't makes sense, and since Messiaen used harmonies both simple and complex, that doesn't make sense either.... what you have said is overly conservative, not the slightest bit liberal... talk about not making sense!! Don't confuse opinion with confused fact, just say "not for me"!! Although, you may want to check out Quartet for the End of Time first : )
@petezilla right you are my friend. but since birds have no sense of almost anything, i think this is complete randomness, which cannot be treated as music. There must be at least some rules to make it music. So these rhythms you might hear here, are so complex that they can't make much sense on the whole, and the same goes for the melodies. Harmony doesn't exist here. And yeah, definitlely not for me, but i thought i'd say why. cheers mate. :D

I would never dare go to an Oceansize page and say "There could never be music written about the size of the ocean because the ocean has no rhythm, melody, or harmony."

He was not trying to reason with them, he was transcribing their songs and putting it into a musical context, it's really a simple concept. He was not unprecedented in imitating birds or nature, especially as a French composer.

Messiaen, in his relation to bird-song, retains that delight and wonder that a child might feel at the simple wonders of nature, and passes it on to us, his audience. I think it's one of the greatest things an artist can do.

how good of messiaen to give us art that easily transcends politics.
his personal expression of spirituality is inspiring.
(too bad, though, for many composers whom were hindered by the politicians or religious zealots of their time...)
