what an awesome scene. This is why I loved the Two Towers of Lord of the rings of all three segments and in particular this scene with Sam and just the size of the gates and the big creatures opening them. Truly wonderful special effects

@Garglh They might be officers or sergeants who are responsible for watching the lines to keep the men from deserting from the ranks. Officers might have different weapons then the rank and file. For instance at certain times in the Middle Ages only knights would have had swords whereas everyone else would used other kinds of weapons like spears or such. It might also be the same for these guys who have to direct the fighting rather then take part in it.
