A good Greek festival is lots of fun. If you are in St. Louis, Missouri, during the Memorial Day weekend, go to the festival at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in west St. Louis County. During the Labor Day weekend, go to the festival at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the "central west end" neighborhood of St. Louis. (In my opinion, the latter festival is better, but both feature plenty of fine Greek food, Greek music and Greek dancing.)

Same reason that traditionally Scottish men wear 'skirts' (actually they are called kilts).. think history and war. There were no strong jeans for soldiers so kilt like uniforms presented the best thing to wear when fighting a war giving you the most free movement. These men are dressed as soldiers from the Greek war of independence. Other armies adopted kilts for the same reason. There were a type of 'trouser' in the late middle ages but it was too weak for war and robes too long.
