This is meant to be a direct competitor to the Native Instruments Maschine! I like both companies and I have wondered when was Akai going to come up with a reply to the Maschine and....here it is! Something tells me this may be better than Maschine, also taking into consideration the legendary Akai build quality.
WOW, way da go AKAI! I work with Ableton Live, a Novation SL MK2 and my sweet little AKAI MPC1000..... But I would love to own one of these Renaissance and change it for my 1000 :P!!!!!
I had a MPC-60 in 1990 with 24 seconds sample memory. mono. I would sample left and right sides then trigger the right with the left pad then i had my stereo. I thought i was doing something at that time.
This looks like a great product too bad i don't have the money or the time to re learn it.
This is why Youtube suck because all you dumbasses in here talkin shit.
Your here for the product save the bullshit for some other place
@notlimited214 Sorry to disappoint your expectations, but Akai can choose to utilize anyone to promote new products and it's no news flash that many black producers and beat makers have used the MPC...and I'm sure others have to, but in terms of "Success" in using the MPC and its use in hip hop and r&b, it's a no brainer to utilize the most interested parties involved. I dont get mad when I see a Usually white male, metal guitarist promoting some super cool high gain guitar amp.
I think its worth the price because all hardware beat machines have digital software now the software for the akai has taken the leap of being more integrated with the computer while you still have the mpc and workflow.
I like how the software looks. It looks solid like protools or logic. From what I'm seeing I would skip over the maschine skip under the 2500 or 5000 and get this baby in a heartbeat.
Maschine to me looks plastic when people bang on it looks like its going to break.
I want to embrace this MPC but I cannot see my workflow and use without the Q-Slider. What on earth were you guys thinking? ALL knobs and NO slider? I am perplexed. I had the 1000, 2000, 2000XL, 2500, 5000 and sold each one to get the MPK88, Logic 9, Komplete8, and Ableton Live. I want the MPC cuz it's iconic, but I need my sliders man...
I have the akai mpd32 already, with that i had to open it up and adjust the pad sensitivity with electrical tape from the inside... with the mpc ren, will i have to do that as well?
Now they just have to make a video explaining why it's not better to just buy an MP32, Presonus FireStudio Mobile, and Ableton Live for $250 less than the Renaissance.
@meedily The workflow and experience wouldn't even be close. You'd have to keep your head in the computer and on the mouse the much of the time. Time stretching would be more complicated. You wouldn't have seamless, matched integration between the software and hardware as you would with MPC Renaissance. You wouldn't have the 6GB+ sound library that comes with MPC Renaissance and you couldn't import projects and samples from any previous MPC as you can with MPC Renaissance.
@meedily agreed. Im not leaving my MPD32. Rather put the money towards another piece of equipment I dont have yet. Maybe I would consider if I didnt buy the MPD32
As a seasoned producer "IN" the music business, Owner of the best mpc Roger Linn ever made the MPC 3000, & now user of the Maschine, the one thing the Maschine lacks is workflow & swing. The latter was missing in all the other Mpc's after the 3000. Hence Those that have owned one, owned 2. Maschine workflow is challenging but i've condensed it so it feels like the MPC 3000. But at the end of the day, it is, and will always be the BEST! & doubters have never used it. enough said
@skylarjones123 Nope, on thomann.de the mpc ren is 888 euro and maschine 579. But the mpc is much better. The real competition against the maschine is the mpc studio which is still better but costs 498 so as long as the software turns out good it will kick machines ass
Will do everything of the maschine plus more. Looks like it Way more efficient also. I love my maschine cant wait to grab this tho. Renaissance/studio-maschine only downside could be a little cheaper
I love the MPC series but the whole point of an MPC is to not rely on a computer. For maximum effect, I used to pair my macbook with my MPC 2500 to have the best of both worlds but still sequenced with the MPC. You could buy both a laptop and a used 2500 for the same cost. Don't get me wrong, this will still be better than a maschine but using an MPC for that is comparing apples to oranges.
Not entirely sure i get the point of this. Why get a MPC that works like a MPC, sounds like a MPC, looks like a MPC - but you're forced to drag you computer along for the ride???
What i've always admired about the MPCs were the fact that they offered a real and flexible alternative to the computer, with all the sequencing, internal and external, you'd need to make music. You guys should've stuck those knobs and such on the existing design, done more about effects and realtime performance-changes
The whole point of an MPC is it's internal clock - rock solid yet a little quirky on the groove - hence all the groove templates for drum machines like GEIST etc. With the sequencer being outsourced to the computer, this makes it just another controller - a very expensive and desirable one, but just realise what you are buying into...
I hope people do the research before getting a hard on for this thing. Remember MPC Music Production Center, That thing in the video is a MPC Music Production Controller there is a difference not downing it because it has its good points, i just want people to be aware before they go spending all that money and then they are all butt hurt when they do the math. In business, the best way to hide something is to put it in plain sight. I will stick with the 2500 never fails.
and now all the dumb ass people who wanna make rap beats are gunna go buy some controller with 16 pads and have no idea what to do with it when they get home
@DigitalDevilXL ... Really? NO WAY!! Wow ive never heard of a MIDI controller. WHATS THAT? LOL- It is overpriced, but I have a feeling it will be fun to use if I can ever find one...
@bm4n11-- Depends on what your producing. @thugsy15-- I play strings AND keys. Ever heard of MIDI? Tell me what you would prefer over the MPC 2000XL...
I still own the MPC 60 actually. The 2000XL, the 4000, and a 5000. So what do I need the Ren for? I don't. Even if you produce analogue, there is no reason not to like the Akai digital samplers. Times have changed over the past 20 years. You can be retro if you want, but some of us are utilizing new developments in music production technology. @zitosonic, it is not standalone, you would need a PC or mac to run the REN...
@zitosonic cant use it away from your computer like an actual mpc lol its just a really expensive controller... mpc is supposed to stand for midi/music production center... but this is called a music production controller lol
@bm4n11 i knw right? so if one producer doesn't like mpc's then he's a bitch? anyone who believes that statement is an uneducated and immature sample-head who doesn't know how to play keys.
@fruitypebbles904 You won't have time stretching, MPC workflow, MPC Swing, MPC pads or Audio I/O that sound like an MPC3000, MPC4000 or MPC60 when you want it to. These may not be important to you, but there are many producers for whom these features are important.
i just got the octatrack and gotta say: you are right! but i also use the mpc 2500 with jj os. the two are now in love with each other! the really complement each other very well.
C'mon Akai, Namm is here and no good updated product demos, and a 1299 price tag? Maschine for 599 vs Ren for 1299....with Ren you get an interface....Maschine...Komplete elements. Maybe it should cost a little more than Maschine because of the additional ins/out,interface, etc, but 1299 is enough for a guy to get Maschine and a Laptop.
I would actually as a MPC 2500 owner see an option to just get the software with a firmware upgrade that allows your existing MPC to sync/map to the software.
Correction...I owned the 2000xl at one point and now 2500. I didn't realize that Mpc no longer stood for Midi Production Center but rather Music Production Center. How about making a driver/firmware update to enable full control of the software through the use of our already purchased MPC's since the new MPC's are essentially Midi Controllers anyway?
Dear Akai, why don't you make the software compatible with the USB equipped MIDI PRODUCTION CENTERS that we already purchased via downloadable firmware updates?
All the camera phones at namm and knowbody has a real life demo up yet telling us if this thing really works like a 2000xl or even as good as maschine and to think I have namm tickets but can't go do to work someone post something ASAP
Hmmmm $599 for machine or $1299 for this? In a time where Hip-Hop no longer sells? I'd say Machine has more bang for the buck, plus for another stack u can get Komplete 8 that works in Machine..
@CentipedeTheReal It seems it's a MIDI controller and a computer program, much like Maschine, except it has the added bonus of a built in audio interface.
im still maschine and akai mpc3k till death!!!! my way is to sample your own drum tracks made on the mpc3k then run through maschine chop it up again it gives it that great 3k grit and the fuctionality of maschine ;)
@dulaone Maschine has VST support, pretty detailed editing (though the automation editing needs improvements), and stackable effects et.c., but it needs a computer and an audio interface (and doesn't timestretch). Beat Thang is a standalone battery-driven unit which does timestretch, but the editing is mostly "delete note, try again", the way the effects work is useless and there's obviously no VST support. Maschine's better at home or in studio, Beat Thang's good on the move. Both chop well.
@dulaone Well, you can change the speed of the samples, which shifts the pitch and tempo together, but you can't change pitch and tempo of a sample separately...except there's the work-around, which is using a pitch shifter VST plugin to change the pitch back after changing the speed, but the results of that method obviously vary depending on what VST pitch shifter you can get your hands on.
i have the mpc 2500 with jj os. i am interested in switching to the 5000. but after i read the comments on the mpc-forum with all the bugs i am not sure. will there be a new os with bug fixes for the 5000? or are all the programmers now only working on the renaissance?
i think it's certain to say that dj premier wouldn't test it. maybe for money. ok.
but he is still on his mpc 60 and his s 950 that he knows inside out. he never changed: no mpc 3000, no 4000, no 1000, no 2500, no 500 - and especially no software controller!
which shows: you don't have to have the latest gear or fall for some marketing-bs to make the dopest music on the planet!
"Being ignorance" well that's a wonderfully ironic statement. May I remind you that you're commenting on an advert for the latest in a line of classic HipHop production tools. 'Rach to their own" is meant to imply you respect the opinions of others who do not share yours... That being said, shut the fuck up. How can you hate on hiphop DJ's too? All other DJing is merely mixing. You don't know what you're talking about do you?. Moron.
The look of the machine is wonderful, if it had the guts of a JJOS 2500 along with these new PC/Mac-integration features, it would be a marvel. Too bad it's no much more than nice controller.
@themodularmodular This is an instrument of its own. Hip Hop is sampling, that's how it was created. Why do you think DJing is an element of Hip Hop? But then again, judging by your coming you probably don't know the culture.
ne ways .. the conclusion is , this machine is garbage ... i meen piece of plastic .. overpriced plastic , that cannot even be a standalone !!! lol.. now thats funny ... lol...booooo
@onlyomari .. comon have you seen the video with arab .. and his latency issues .. lol.. look if you have half of an ""artistic brain"" you would use a 3000 , .. producers in the game respect you alot more .. well especially the ones who have made that will be cutting your check ..plus omari . you still havent mad any hits or break through in the industry , .. lol.. you dont know what i do out here in the city of l.a. for me to post any videos.. thanks for showing your concern .. about ME :) .
Akai is totally copying NI's Maschine lineup. Their new MPC software looks a lot like the Maschine software, the MPC Renaissance reminds me of a complicated and expensive version of the Maschine, the MPC Studio reminds me of a complicated and expensive version of the Maschine Mikro, and I'm betting that the MPC Fly will be a lot similar to iMaschine. I though MPCs were better when a computer wasn't involved.
@bobbio555 - Gosh, harsh words - I quake in my Georgian manor house. You really must have strained hard on your potty to get that intellectually stunted sentence out.
I just looked at the back of NI's Maschine and decided that they are in trouble. Akai's MPC Renaissance is about to take over. The only thing that will kill Akai's attempt is its pricing. I think it should be $800 or less.
@BigPooch1970 I really don't think so, because this is practically the same thing as maschine, with an audio interface. and the software looks uglier imo. The only plus is the rca out, I think thats pretty cool, but it's still computer-based, not offering anything new
@OnlyOmari yes it is offering something new, the classic akai workflow but of course much easier now that you dont have to worry about how to record all the stuff into your daw, with the akai swing, and note repeat with latch, time stretch, and more... BUT with the possibilities to do what maschine does so it's just plain better =)
@ImDino not knockin it man. I'm still def. keeping my eye on it, just a few things I'm already sketchy about. More interested in the studio model though. I'll agree with you on the mpc workflow though, it is much better, but let's wait and see first. I'm not really a quantize guy, so that never bothered me. i actually have a 2000xl, and the tracking out was hell for me. Maschine did a pretty good job at replacing that, and that was inspiring the creativity. I'm for whatever works best.
@OnlyOmari I know you like to think like that now that you probably use a maschine i guess, by all means use it if it makes you happy. Both are good products
I think the product is great for a controller. It already blows NI Maschine out the water. It has all the outputs needed to expand your home studio. The line inputs will be great for genuine direct sampling. Being that its based on your computer's CPU means that its software can be constantly upgraded. I think that Propellerhead's Reason will soon be in trouble. The unit just looks so cool it makes you want to have it. I think we are witnessing the final chapter in hardware vs. software.
This is a garbage machine... akai has failed again to produce a quality machine.. they want to emulate the 3000 and 60 .. lol.. whe with the price of this piece of crap you can buy a 3000....
@DigitalDevilXL lmao this guy again. The software hater. I think most people coming from the mpc's will be looking forward to this joint. IF it has the same sequencer as the mpc (which I love) this will do well. My only issue with maschine is the sequencer. Nobody would buy a 3000 now unless you're just collecting, thats only 16-bit dude. and Tracking out is hell. and these young dudes wouldn't know how to get the mpc sound, so no point. I see you still don't have any vids up, whats up man?
wow I can't believe people are pissing on each other so hard on this NI vs Akai debate. wtf, none of yall work for either of these companies but you take it upon yourself to get in arguments with each other over whos better..wtf does it matter what you use to make good music?? I watched a video of a dude mixing and scratching with cassette tape decks and it sounded dope!
@djbuzzword Thats some truth right there. AKAI Should pay Roger Linn what he deserves and get back to the Next Next Level ish.. this looks cool but they are just runnin away from one of their forefathers!!
@Moog168 idk if they were as huge as you say they were, cant find any charts. But if swizz beatz, kanye, alchemist, timbalan, just blaze werent in this commercial what makes you think J dilla who is not in the right condition of holding up an mpc in front of a camera should be the one thats missing :P
@ImDino if the man produced the beats to most of Busta Rhyme's stuff and also Janet Jackson's "Got til it's gone" yeah thats pretty huge.
Like I said all. And if you're biasing by charts you're really forgetting the artistic value. I mean you see Pete Rock in that moment and J Dilla and Pete Rock worked with similar artists.
Also it would be very respectful to do so J Dilla has changed how the MPC can be used to create beats. Instead of judging the hits just look at what he has done.
@Taurus602 I agree with you,Akai is like the washed up jock who's trying to get its shine back, but its too little too late.they had 25 years now its time for some one else to be on top.
I´m wondering If it´s possible to use the software without the hardware when you´re on the move? Will you offer the software without the controller as well? any ugly dongle or challenge -response copyprotection? I guess it will support 96khz at 24 Bit? when will it be in stores, what´s the price tag ? :-) ? cheers Philipp
@MadjaGonz IF UD LIKE TO CHECK OUT MY BEATS I HAVE ONE POSTED UNDER MY FALBERT NAME WHICH I MADE ON THE MPC YEARS AGO AND I HAVE MY NEW STUFF UNDER A NEW NAME PM IF YOU LIKE TO CHECK IT OUT ALL MADE ON REASON 6.0 AND CUBASE
, AND LIKE OTHERS SAID WHY PAY 1500, OR 2100 LIKE I DID FOR MY 2000XL WHICH I STILL BUT ITS USE HAS GONE TO CONTROLLER FOR LAST COUPLE YEARS , I AM A REASON AND CUBASE USER AND THE THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THESE PROGRAMS SURPASS THE MPC EVEN IF I LOST THE SWING I HAD TO MY TRACKS LIKE VIXKERS IM LOOKING TO ORCHESTRATE MY TRACKS MORE I WONDER HOW THERE DAW CAN EVEN COME CLOSE TO ITS COMPETITORS , FRUITY LOOPS , REASON AND ABLETON LIVE
Any one think this device might be suitable for classical music composition? The gentlemen depicted certainly show a spirited, if not curiously agile approach to emitting noise, whereas I'm looking to achieve compositions of a more complex harmonious structure with a beginning, middle and end.
@VickersDoorter As with anything, it's only a tool. The quality of the composition created with the tool comes down to the user..in other words, if you have a decent beginning and end to your complex harmonious structure, but your middle is shitty, no...you cannot blame the device, software, or this ad...you can blame yourself. My advice, don't buy the machine based on the targeted audience of an ad, but rather if the tools in question merit a purchase based on your own skill set. I guess not
@glowstickbay - Thank you for your considered views. I do indeed pay great heed to the third and fourth movements, at the risk of them being lack-lustre or mediocre. I presume that is what you aluded to as "shitty middle"? Predominantly, my work over the last 23 years has been with a Fairlight III, but with just 14mb of sample RAM available to it, I am looking for a more compliant up-to-date, all-in-one box solution.
Whatever happened to musicianship?

fruitypebbles904 1 month ago 11
@fruitypebbles904 You won't have time stretching, MPC workflow, MPC Swing, MPC pads or Audio I/O that sound like an MPC3000, MPC4000 or MPC60 when you want it to. These may not be important to you, but there are many producers for whom these features are important.

I would actually as a MPC 2500 owner see an option to just get the software with a firmware upgrade that allows your existing MPC to sync/map to the software.
youngjboy 1 month ago
the mpc ren IS 1299. haha.. didnt see that coming did you?
wuanjeffers 1 month ago
Correction...I owned the 2000xl at one point and now 2500. I didn't realize that Mpc no longer stood for Midi Production Center but rather Music Production Center. How about making a driver/firmware update to enable full control of the software through the use of our already purchased MPC's since the new MPC's are essentially Midi Controllers anyway?
GrittyCityEnt 1 month ago
Dear Akai, why don't you make the software compatible with the USB equipped MIDI PRODUCTION CENTERS that we already purchased via downloadable firmware updates?

@dulaone Well, there's the Beat Thang, but it has its limitations. Decent for just throwing ideas together though.
Swenglish 1 month ago
@Swenglish In your opinion if you had to choose between the Beat Thang and the Mashine which do you think is better for music production?
dulaone 1 month ago
@dulaone Maschine has VST support, pretty detailed editing (though the automation editing needs improvements), and stackable effects et.c., but it needs a computer and an audio interface (and doesn't timestretch). Beat Thang is a standalone battery-driven unit which does timestretch, but the editing is mostly "delete note, try again", the way the effects work is useless and there's obviously no VST support. Maschine's better at home or in studio, Beat Thang's good on the move. Both chop well.
Swenglish 1 month ago
@Swenglish I cant believe the Maschine doesnt have time stretch. does at least have pitch shift or is that the same thing as time stretch ?
dulaone 1 month ago
@dulaone Well, you can change the speed of the samples, which shifts the pitch and tempo together, but you can't change pitch and tempo of a sample separately...except there's the work-around, which is using a pitch shifter VST plugin to change the pitch back after changing the speed, but the results of that method obviously vary depending on what VST pitch shifter you can get your hands on.

Moron.

I just looked at the back of NI's Maschine and decided that they are in trouble. Akai's MPC Renaissance is about to take over. The only thing that will kill Akai's attempt is its pricing. I think it should be $800 or less.
BigPooch1970 1 month ago
@BigPooch1970 I really don't think so, because this is practically the same thing as maschine, with an audio interface. and the software looks uglier imo. The only plus is the rca out, I think thats pretty cool, but it's still computer-based, not offering anything new
OnlyOmari 1 month ago in playlist More videos from AkaiProVideo
@OnlyOmari yes it is offering something new, the classic akai workflow but of course much easier now that you dont have to worry about how to record all the stuff into your daw, with the akai swing, and note repeat with latch, time stretch, and more... BUT with the possibilities to do what maschine does so it's just plain better =)
ImDino 1 month ago
@ImDino not knockin it man. I'm still def. keeping my eye on it, just a few things I'm already sketchy about. More interested in the studio model though. I'll agree with you on the mpc workflow though, it is much better, but let's wait and see first. I'm not really a quantize guy, so that never bothered me. i actually have a 2000xl, and the tracking out was hell for me. Maschine did a pretty good job at replacing that, and that was inspiring the creativity. I'm for whatever works best.
OnlyOmari 1 month ago
@OnlyOmari I know you like to think like that now that you probably use a maschine i guess, by all means use it if it makes you happy. Both are good products
ImDino 1 month ago
I think the product is great for a controller. It already blows NI Maschine out the water. It has all the outputs needed to expand your home studio. The line inputs will be great for genuine direct sampling. Being that its based on your computer's CPU means that its software can be constantly upgraded. I think that Propellerhead's Reason will soon be in trouble. The unit just looks so cool it makes you want to have it. I think we are witnessing the final chapter in hardware vs. software.
BigPooch1970 1 month ago
@BigPooch1970 Reason will be in trouble??? Talk to me when this thing allows you to compose... ok then.

DigitalDevilXL 1 month ago
@DigitalDevilXL lmao this guy again. The software hater. I think most people coming from the mpc's will be looking forward to this joint. IF it has the same sequencer as the mpc (which I love) this will do well. My only issue with maschine is the sequencer. Nobody would buy a 3000 now unless you're just collecting, thats only 16-bit dude. and Tracking out is hell. and these young dudes wouldn't know how to get the mpc sound, so no point. I see you still don't have any vids up, whats up man?

He's considered a legend among people like Pharell,Kanye West,Flying Lotus,9th Wonder and other cats who work with MPCs.
Moog168 1 month ago
@ImDino So to answer your question yes....he did make HUGE hits.
Moog168 1 month ago
@Moog168 idk if they were as huge as you say they were, cant find any charts. But if swizz beatz, kanye, alchemist, timbalan, just blaze werent in this commercial what makes you think J dilla who is not in the right condition of holding up an mpc in front of a camera should be the one thats missing :P
ImDino 1 month ago
@ImDino if the man produced the beats to most of Busta Rhyme's stuff and also Janet Jackson's "Got til it's gone" yeah thats pretty huge.
Like I said all. And if you're biasing by charts you're really forgetting the artistic value. I mean you see Pete Rock in that moment and J Dilla and Pete Rock worked with similar artists.
Also it would be very respectful to do so J Dilla has changed how the MPC can be used to create beats. Instead of judging the hits just look at what he has done.

Any one think this device might be suitable for classical music composition? The gentlemen depicted certainly show a spirited, if not curiously agile approach to emitting noise, whereas I'm looking to achieve compositions of a more complex harmonious structure with a beginning, middle and end.
VickersDoorter 1 month ago 9
@VickersDoorter As with anything, it's only a tool. The quality of the composition created with the tool comes down to the user..in other words, if you have a decent beginning and end to your complex harmonious structure, but your middle is shitty, no...you cannot blame the device, software, or this ad...you can blame yourself. My advice, don't buy the machine based on the targeted audience of an ad, but rather if the tools in question merit a purchase based on your own skill set. I guess not
glowstickbay 1 month ago
@glowstickbay - Thank you for your considered views. I do indeed pay great heed to the third and fourth movements, at the risk of them being lack-lustre or mediocre. I presume that is what you aluded to as "shitty middle"? Predominantly, my work over the last 23 years has been with a Fairlight III, but with just 14mb of sample RAM available to it, I am looking for a more compliant up-to-date, all-in-one box solution.
