I think this is absolutely her best ASL song translation. She conveys the perfect amount of emotion and is amazingly expressive. what is the diffrence between pse and asl and see? like i know asl is american sign languge and see is im pretty sure signed exact english, but what is pse?
@britnielukacs PSE is pigeon signed english best way I can explain it is like spanglish, you sign with some word order the same as you speak in english, there is a set word order...SEE is signed exact english fading quickly because it paints the wrong picture when you sign it ie: if I said," I worked all day, I'm toast." you wouldnt think I meant I'm a piece of toast, but with SEE they would sign the words "I'm toast" instead of translating that to ASL and saying "I exhausted I"

I like some of your other videos, but you really need to strengthen your facial expressions in this video. One of the most important things in Sign and Interpreting is matching the expression. When I was young my Deaf brother told me, stop watching my hands and look at my face, you will be able to see what I mean from my facial expressions. Ever since then I don't look at a deaf persons hands but look them straight in the eye and I understand so much more.
I learned ASL from a deaf girl, she's very pretty also. She was in my computer class but she always had her interoreter with her; so one day when her interpreter didn't show up... guess what I did. :D Honestly she was cool to kick it with and it was cool to learn something new. I think that's the reason why I still like to look at all this stuff. Well that, and it's impressive to other people. Great job too, not only are you very pretty, but you're also adept at signing. I have been studying sign language for a good 4 years. I would like to know what PSE signing is. I wasn't aware there was more than two types of sign language. Thank you in advance for your answer.
@MelovesAngelique 1. signed exacted english (SEE) which is word for word english very annoying to sign that much, 2. pidgin sign english (PSE) is cross between american sign language (ASL) and SEE, 3. ASL which is more concepts and acting than actual words. Then there are thousands of sign languages between militaries, different countries, different areas of countries and different people so many variations
I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.
@allyballybabe Winkler, your interpretations are so different than Ally's. I don't know which I like better. I like watching the thoughts and opinions behind the lyrics like in Ally's videos because it's cool to see the song as a story instead of just phrases thrown together..
but yours are word for word and mostly english word order. It's catchy, but it's definitely a different experience than what Ally does. She breaks the lyrics down.. You can kind of sign it as you hear it. My opinion...

Conceptually, that's a little off in my opinion.

@nicolehm3.. hmm ok first of all ASL is an INTERPRETATION and if you ask someone who is truly deaf to watch this video might say it was boring because they do not feel anything from it.. its signing and transliterating. With Ewittborg's video, I was pumped up and felt the way the music was swelling and all the powerful concepts and the hairs on my neck and arms stood up because I FELT it. That is what you need to remember.. deaf people cant hear it so they need to FEEL it..

I saw your version of "Handlebars" first then Ewittborg's. I noticed about that song & others of his, it doesn't seem to be ASL but looks more of an expressive type of sign. I guess if I was deaf I would want to know the words more than someone just almost doing their own expressive interpretation, as awesome as his was. well, i wasn't trying to make that a crutch.. i was just saying, that i am still a student and i still have things to work on. i agreed that my video did not have much enthusiasm to it, but i still stated that i am a student, so there are certain things that i am still improving and learning about, thats all... it wasn't an excuse.

Clearly, you don't know me and it sounds like you have had several encounters with these so called "stuck up" people - not my problem. I have seen Ally's other videos and I am a fan, especially of her Taylor Swift videos - I think she translates them very well. That said, I'm glad that you pointed out "her other videos" because I'm just not a fan of THIS one.
Being a student is a legitimate thing to note when you are doing any type of translation work- including to ASL. It's not a crutch unless the person doing the translations is not trying to improve. If you HeartASL as you say, you should be happy that she is trying her hardest to make songs available to the deaf through a language she is still learning.

Like I said before - I'm not trying to discredit her work - Maybe it's not her fault, perhaps the poor quality of her translations of ASL as a language and as a culture falls back on the one who taught it to her. I do HeartASL. I love ASL so much that I'm not going to praise work that does not accurately convey it's meaning.
Very cool to see you putting yourself out there on YouTube for people to give feedback. My 2-cents: Your translation's very consistent with English grammar and mostly follows the English lyrics verbatim. Your editing was slightly distracting, too. Did you use multiple takes and edit them into one video? I'd love to see you unpackage the metaphor and allegory in the song to create a true ASL translation.
@allyballybabe I have much the same impression with the Live version of Handlebars as this one. The song just has so much metaphor that it's got to be unpacked a little more. Following the English is too easy to do the lyrics justice. I REALLY enjoyed your "Firefly Live" video, however. More comments there! :-D

I really like this song, and the first time I heard it, I was like, "Oh, this is cool." then it got towards the end and started talking about making people go to jail and guiding missiles with sattelites, and I was like, umm, ok, they just wanna sound tough, It can still be a good song, but I hate the thing about the Holocaust. That isn't something to joke about. I try to listen to the music during that part, because I don't know why they put it in there.
The song is about how people in power can do things like kill people, put them in jail and, to the extreme, "End the planet in a holocaust". They're not joking about it. If you actually paid any attention to the lyrics you would understand that.
watch the music video... it explains the song better... it warns of what could happen if one person gets too powerful... ie... Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust.
And not only explains how people in power can kill people and cause such destruction, but how people in power do that instead of using their power for good.
Like a quote from "Schindler's List".

hey ive noticed that you mouth some words for the songs you sign. doo you only mouth the words that are visible. casue only about 30% of words are visible when you lip read somthing and it looks liek you are onyl mouthing the words that are visible. this proably makes no sense

i like it it funny each peson has there own signs for each of the words in life you know i mean there books but people take it diffrently that is where the face come in i took asl for one year and we didnt use our books but yet flobots is a varry political group reaching out to the world thu music that the way the do it i like deaf music also it really kool i know alot of deaf poeple and i love the work of all the deaf arties out there i mean they have pasion for the work they do

ewitteborg's video is AMAZING!
He is also a CODA and has obviously been signing for WAAAAAY longer than I have, it's his first language.
But yes, I agree, his version is awesome.
You guys have to understand that I am just a student, still... I have been signing since Middle School, but even though this video is over a year old, I am still learning and am not a professional.

It's sad to hear an ASL student use the crutch of "being a student" as an excuse to not get into the music and to add an expressive personal touch. I'm not trying to discredit your work, I'm just trying to emphasize that Deaf people rely on the hearing to accurately interpret and convey the message of a song. Try this - mute your computer, watch your video and then get back to me.

well, i wasn't trying to make that a crutch.. i was just saying, that i am still a student and i still have things to work on. i agreed that my video did not have much enthusiasm to it, but i still stated that i am a student, so there are certain things that i am still improving and learning about, thats all... it wasn't an excuse.
and you're right. Deaf people DO rely on the body language to convey the message of a song. Take a look at some of my other videos and let me know what you think

Dude you are being a straight up jerk. She was simply saying that, duh, she isnt going to be as fluent and accomplished as a CODA who has been signing his entire life! But she has an obvious passion for the deaf and is doing her part to reach out and minister to them. Quit lecturing unless you can do it constructively. Any time you have to add "*sarcasm*" to a post, it is probably one you dont need to make. Grow up.

Why don't you look at the ratings on our posts. All mine have positive ratings, and oh look, yours are negative! Obviously my use of colloquialisms did not offend too many people.

I think you're either jealous or an idiot. Make ur own video then! I have no idea why ur so mean & bitter. You're a CODA, that's cool - they are some of the best signers out there.
Clearly, you don't know me and it sounds like you have had several encounters with these so called "stuck up" people - not my problem. I have seen Ally's other videos and I am a fan, especially of her Taylor Swift videos - I think she translates them very well. That said, I'm glad that you pointed out "her other videos" because I'm just not a fan of THIS one.

Being a student is a legitimate thing to note when you are doing any type of translation work- including to ASL. It's not a crutch unless the person doing the translations is not trying to improve. If you HeartASL as you say, you should be happy that she is trying her hardest to make songs available to the deaf through a language she is still learning.

Like I said before - I'm not trying to discredit her work - Maybe it's not her fault, perhaps the poor quality of her translations of ASL as a language and as a culture falls back on the one who taught it to her. I do HeartASL. I love ASL so much that I'm not going to praise work that does not accurately convey it's meaning.

Very cool to see you putting yourself out there on YouTube for people to give feedback. My 2-cents: Your translation's very consistent with English grammar and mostly follows the English lyrics verbatim. Your editing was slightly distracting, too. Did you use multiple takes and edit them into one video? I'd love to see you unpackage the metaphor and allegory in the song to create a true ASL translation.

@allyballybabe I have much the same impression with the Live version of Handlebars as this one. The song just has so much metaphor that it's got to be unpacked a little more. Following the English is too easy to do the lyrics justice. I REALLY enjoyed your "Firefly Live" video, however. More comments there! :-D

I really like this song, and the first time I heard it, I was like, "Oh, this is cool." then it got towards the end and started talking about making people go to jail and guiding missiles with sattelites, and I was like, umm, ok, they just wanna sound tough, It can still be a good song, but I hate the thing about the Holocaust. That isn't something to joke about. I try to listen to the music during that part, because I don't know why they put it in there.

The song is about how people in power can do things like kill people, put them in jail and, to the extreme, "End the planet in a holocaust". They're not joking about it. If you actually paid any attention to the lyrics you would understand that.

hey ive noticed that you mouth some words for the songs you sign. doo you only mouth the words that are visible. casue only about 30% of words are visible when you lip read somthing and it looks liek you are onyl mouthing the words that are visible. this proably makes no sense
