i play guitar, and i have always wandered, do you really need to look at the score(i think the word is score at least) while you play? i thought that guys in symphonic did that out of custom or just for the hundreds of tempos in an opera.

@patrax123 Yes, you kind of have to! I'm a violinist myself, I lead an orchestra and when you are an orchestral player, you cannot afford to learn everything by heart. Orchestral music is a lot more complex than guitar music (I play guitar too!) and the sheet music is pretty essential especially in many classical pieces, which are made up of many long movements. Guitar is simple in comparison! And by the way, we play more than just operas.
