it can but Mariah has nodules on her vocal cords and because her constant touring and abusing her voice she has done permanent damage to voice. She said she has had them since she was a child. But in the past 5 years I guess she has smartened up and has been doing alot of vocal resting

Yes, it's lipped. A lot of singers record a "live-sounding" version during rehearsal (or just the high second half of a song) and then lip-sync to that so that it sounds live during performance. There's so much pressure on singers to be perfect that I don't fault them for it. Mariah, unfortunately, has damaged her vocal cords as one of the hardest working singers in the biz and her voice isn't always reliable so she often does this.
