It is sad......and wrong.....I think because the human population is so overwhelming, and these shitheads treat animals the way they do...why not slaughter the slaughtereres instead, let the animals watch and laugh. The best hope for these animals is to just wait it out. Mankind will annilate themselves soon enough, as we've seen on recent activities here on earth, and then all the animals on this planet can get back to grazing in wide open grassy fields, marine life as well too
Years ago we'd heard about the plight of horses. As Amish, we use horses dependently, and, our horses are the best cared for in the nation. But we have to breed our own horses because they're too expensive for us to buy. We contacted the persons for who were leading the drive to save horses from slaughter (actor Bo Derek) contacting all emails on the "Bless the Beasts" contact page saying we'd take 10,000 to start - No reply was the reply! Why? See homepage (U-posts are limited in size)!

thanks for making this video to "educate" the public.....however if there is no dough in it most dont give a hoot . For the most part , People are still neanderthals !!-
a horse is no different than how badly all animals are treated. dog are treated bad. chickens really bad. pigs and cows not so good. even lab rats and monkeys feel pain. beings from deep space come use us as food and treat us like that would wonder what we are crying about. this is how it's done from watching us. what's the problem. u feel more suffering because your big wonderful brain? most people are not good people.
barrl re hres are treated good but why not the bronco horses.these ppl are losers.who would wanna kill the most beutiful creature onthis earth????every day i pray to gd saying how happy i am for horses to be on this earth but knowing that the animals i love to death are being slaughter breaks my heart.yes fls are a beutiful sight but d you want to see them being killed and hurt.????!!!no!it so heartbreaking...
But if they were able to be helped and lead comfortable lives, I have rehabed them to other careers or just living out their lives as someone's pet with the agreement if they can no longer care for the horse or no longer want it, it is returned to me.I don't neglect them and don't pass them off as junk. Please do not judge. The horses best interest is at the center of my heart as I love them all.But prolonging their pain if they can't be fixed isn't kind, it's cruel.
I will add here that sadly, many rescued horses do duffer from health issues, mild problems that are not cared for, for whatever reason, turn into major health issues. 75% of horses surrendered due to a health issue was a direct result of owners neglecting to fix the problem in a timely manner. Animals can be expensive, that is why we educate about responsible pet ownership. animals should not be viewed as a disposable resource that can simply be replaced when a problem comes up.
Very well stated indeed. Sadly many get horses without realizing the cost of the upkeep and the fact that even routine care is not cheap, much less if there is a larger problem. Instead they keep passing it off until it is one that can no longer be fixed. Had they fixed it early, something as basic as proper hoof trimming many times would prevent all the horse's problem. Instead they neglect them until they are unable to be saved. Quite sad outcome indeed.
I have sympathy but as a responsible breeder much of the problem does lie with breeding for color/spots/etc and the overbreeding of thoroughbreds. However, most horses I have gotten with a history of abuse did not work out due to major medical problems that the kindest thing to do would have been to euthanize them.Problems that were not discovered until later down the road directly linked to their abuse.I do however buy a vast majority of retired racers and support giving them another career.
I've seen the slaughter auctions its always so sad. I've seen so many abused and injured horses go through the ring even foals. I've also seen just amazing horses with so much potental (I can't spell). Many have been through so much but some still aprach hoping for kindness. If I had the money I'd buy them all and give them a good home. Its so sad.
Suffering is the problem. I really don't know what is worse than that, and you didn't bother to elaborate. Like most problems, including the ones you would probably consider "more serious," this one results from human stupidity, ignorance and selfishness.
Its important to think about all of the problems we face in our world, don't you think? this person has taken the time to do something positive about one of them, and thats great. That type of sarcasm disempowers people. I care about grasslands ecosystems, is that less important than animal cruelty or helping children in need? someone has to give a damn about these issues too.
Well that is simply not sarcasm- lets get it taken care of so we can work on other issues- like human life. Watch those videos, tell me they are easier on the eyes.
i find it problematic to dismiss issues of cruelty and the environment as "less important" than those such as starving children because they're often symptoms of the same problems.
how is the average person supposed to impact on the issue of child abuse? Its socially unacceptable for 1, and 2 already covered by legistlation and law inforcement.
i just cant understand why compasionate people squabble so much when there are so many apathetic people around us.
Living where i do, i understand the rodeo very well. We have rescued several of the "kept till they get old and bred to make more broncs" mares. Many were given to us because they refused to buck even after being beaten and shocked. While it is true that some rodeo stock is managed by upstanding ranches,.. All are not, and until you see what we see on a daily basis that comes from the so called "cared for buckin' horses" then it is not fair to say we do not understand the rodeo.
Every year here there is a very big rodeo. I always worried about the calves and bulls, but it never occurred to me that the horses would be considered equally disposable. How awful.
When rescues are full to the brink of owner released horses, because in the current state of things families can not afford the cost to keep them, i don't think breeding more is the responsible thing to do. But perhaps that is just my opinion, and the great thing about that is we each get to have our own and by doing so we can have our differences while still working towards making things better for the things we care about.
the so called song played along with this video is SO ANNOYING it litterally takes-away from the message.I'm sorry singer but get another job.The iraqis could use this to torture peoples.Take the rediculous noise off the air P L E A S E

We don't yet have this problem in the UK but it seems to be creeping that way. There are so many people here breeding thoroughbreds that no one knows what to do with them. Most get put to racing, don't win anything then get sold on as "experienced rider only". It's not a big problem yet but with most people just wanting a nice family cob, where will all the ex racehorses go?
Well said video, I can relate to the back yard breeder problem. Out of three mares we bought all were bred, including a less than two year old filly(she slipped fortunately). But where we could only afford the four original I had too sell some of the horses we had, because we could not afford all of them. Fortunately we found good homes for them. With any animal spay/neuter is my theme phrase.
Very true! Though there is not a safe or cheap way to sterilize mares, Most castrations on studs are affordable. Responsible breeding is key to keep numbers down. Horses are not cheap to maintain, one horse can cost about 200 a month and that is simply for hay and grain. I <3 your theme phrase.
Thank you for the kind words. I urge everyone who loves horses to support their local equine rescues with donations, volunteering or even word of mouth. One voice does make a difference.
It is a shame these morons got a law passed prohibiting it. They bear the responsibility for the longterm mistreatment of equines. At least when they were legal to sell to the food market...Humans were fed and the misery was short term. Now equines are left to waste away instead of being used for something.I realize this is not a popular stance but if you truely cared for these magnificent creatures, you would educate youselves as to the reality, instead of falling for the PETA bullsh*t.

Great video, only thing I disagree on is the rodeo part, which I do not believe is cruel (some _people_ yes, but they're in every discipline). There are horses bought at auction, go in inexperienced pleasure homes, trained incorrectly, get labled as 'problem' horses and wind up on the market again...
Education is definently the key...it's why I buy OTT TBs and problem horses and have never bred my mare ;)
many pmu breeder produce nice stock with good bloodlines and work to produce nice foals. its hardly relevant since the market for pmu mares is nearly non-existant because the side affects of many of the hormonal meds caused them to be pulled off the market.
Though the Premarin drug is off the market, we still see horses being bred at alarming rates. Though there are some good horses to be found everywhere, it is overproducing those horses that becomes the problem. When supply is much higher then demand you find large amounts of throw away horses. Moderation is best, with any breed of horse. Producing more then you need to can result in a bad situation for the horse the owner and the community. Breed Responsibly.
note - when rescuing malnutritioned horse, if unsure, please consult vet as to correct procedure to nursing ur new best friend back to health - remember its a gradual process to nurse a horse back to health & should not be rushed
video highlights cruel world we live in, & i would prefer all those poor horses find homes so they live long & happy lives, only solution if no1 will look after them is euthanasia - far more humane than dying a slow & painful death from starvation etc
HEY , no time to worry about the slaughter of horses, soon WE HUMANS will face a massive global blow which will cut our population down by 50%, that is the governments solution to overpopulation, they prefer this method instead of the AL GORE solution
I went to a horse auction back in march. Foals sold for $5-10. The horses were slapped, beaten, and scared half to death. Most of them were lame and thin.
my horse broke down on the track as a 3 year old. he is a 17hh high black thorougbred gelding. and we took him, unwillingly, as we have no money. we still dont, and he's definately not as well cared for as a show horse, but he's alive, and doing fine.
the alternative was to go to auction. to become dogfood or what have you.
so, I do sympathize. I don't think horse over polulation is the biggest issue in the scope of the entire world, but one that hits home. thanks for the vid.
There are many issues in this world that we face your right. I may not be able to address them all, but i am good with animals so i feel it is better to start somewhere then ignore it all together. Equine overpopulation is a big issue to me as i have worked with horses since i was a little girl, rescuing animals alongside my mother. If everyone in the world picked one issue to educate and help on, think of the wonderful place we would live. Good luck with your TB they are not easy keepers.
There are a lot more videos out there that you guys can see. Some are WAY more graphic. Go to myspace and go to videos and search horse slaughter. There are some that you will prob. need tissues with. A lot of people are unaware of this. I didnt find out about this till about 2 or 3 years ago.
I don't think I could stand watching those. This one alone brought tears to my eyes. I am a huge horse lover. Have been around them all my life. I'd give anything to have taken just one of those poor babies (even an adult is a baby to me. Sue me. I've a huge heart.) home with me. Thank you so much for the insight.
Yes, they have bred some of their horses, but they grow up with a purpose, and will die with that purpose. PMU is also adding to the industry of slaughter, and that's one reason why it needs to be stopped, along with the last slaughter house in the USA.
I agree with this completly. My riding barn has had some of their mares bred several times. Sugar was bred for refinment, but her colt, Swayzee, was gelded, and is now used as a lesson and show horse. Jolene has had two colts, Connor and Cruze, who will grow up to be lesson and show horses. Nick bred a mare at our barn before he was gelded, and their filly grew up to be a show horse.
