this is live, seriously guys, true talent does exist lol... IF you REALLY listen to the tempos and his voice rests, you will tell the difference from a studio version to a live version. at 0:23 to 0:28 there is a shorter rest, and he exhales at 0:26 to 0:27, whereas in the studio he rests longer at that particular point and there is a more prominent verbrato in the studio version. also, the ending it sounds like he cut off sooner... but oh well! he is talented!!!

I believe this to be live: if not, someone should shoot the sound technician because the instrumental backing (which does appear to be playback) is overwhelming Vitas' vocal from about 1:25-1:40.

This is not the same vocal as on the official video, though it's strikingly similar. Listen to the way he pronounces the R the first time he sings the name Ester: it's more rolled here, sort of similar to Scottish pronunciation, whereas in the mv the pronunciation is more obviously Russian.

i'm certain this is playback. at one point, i thought he was using a mix of playback + live singing, but i don't believe this is the case. i checked the sound bite you mentioned; in the official video, that part is noticeably softer than the rest of the vocals. the sound system + audio recording quality probably produced a more distorted sound, causing the vocals to appear more muffled than in the official video. i really do hope to see/hear him sing this song truly live one day!

Granted it is difficult to compare an amateur recording like this with a studio recording (and doing so hurts my head!), but I don't believe distortion could possibly produce the difference I described: furthermore, in the last "Ester" (approx 0:37 here/ 1:05 MV) the R sounds slightly breathier here and more rolled in the mv, i.e. the the difference is the OTHER WAY AROUND from the first one, which would not happen were it a characteristic of the sound recording.

P.S. There is also a very slight timing mismatch in the vibrato on the first syllable of "nemici" (approx 0:54 here/ 1:22 MV), and the ending is different here. I cannot swear this is live: I wasn't there (though I suspect whoever filmed this was probably close enough to be able to tell), but I will swear this is NOT the same vocal as in the official video, and I stand by my assertion that if the vocal here is playback then the sound technician wants shot (or at least his/ her arse kicked!)

I replied to this video (rather than to the multitude of broadcast footage available) is because you are the first one to have a convincing argument. Perhaps I can go back to my theory that this performance is a mix of playback + live vocals. The similarities in all his performances of JUST this song are too strong to ignore. He never "proves" to us he's singing this song (never pulls his mic away), as he has for every other song. That alone is suspicious.

I've found performances of songs where he does do that with the microphone to be strikingly similar too: the consistency of his performances seems incredible but I think he really is that good. You have a point though, he never seems to use this song (or Dedication) to prove he's singing live as he does with other challenging songs. Maybe he just thinks it would spoil these too much, but I think it does spoil some of his performances a bit as it is. It's a shame he feels the need to do that.

I agree with you! Pulling the microphone away DOES spoil the song. I find myself saying, "Just sing, man, sing! I believe you; it's real!" It's just to me that when he's "clearly" live, the timbre of his voice is different than when it "seems" he's miming. But who really knows? He could be just that good. We're so spammy. ;)

If he's miming this song, I'm okay with that. He makes each performance interesting to watch; I would still pay to see him lip sync. It would help if they didn't play the exact backing track from the video. In fact, I'd think it would be pretty kickass if he just did a snippet of this song a capella (check out his a capella snippet, keywords "improvised Ave Maria"). Glad to know we're all obsessed with him, lip syncing or not. :)

I can just about deal with musicians miming on TV (though I'd rather they didn't), but if I went to a concert and caught the singer lip-synching I'd feel a bit cheated. Mind you, what usually happens if a singer is having problems with his voice is the audience will help out with the singing but that would be difficult with a song like this! Vitas is so awesome that if I heard him perform just one song live I'd consider that to be worth the price of a concert ticket.

yes it is playback.. I LOVE vitas but these performances ARE synced.. i dropped the three "live performances" of this i could find into sonar and protools and it all matches up EXACTLY.. As good as he is there is no reason for it though..i have heard him do actual "live" performances..strange.

what i mean when i said "singing is just like talking" is that  the sound of your voice while singing is affected by the same voice when speaking coz the sound of any voice is produced in the same way, thats why it recomend that ones you "warm-up" you MUST to be quiet, darling ;)

Not a single thing is different from him singing it in the videos or anything. Same notes, same vibrato, same everything. This sounds TOO perfect for it not to be playback. Singing and talking are NOT the same. Even the best opera singers sound different in each performance. Vitas does not.

Jesi, that depends on the microphone, and I don't know if he even uses the same one for a whole concert or if he changes mics when he wants different effects. He's not using the same kind you'd find at the pub karaoke anyway.

because he is russian (latvian), so he is snubbed by european and american organizers and listeners. he is aso very popular in israel.

believe me he doesn't need lip synching, but i can believe that his manager forces him to do it, because some passes in their contract.

Just one thing, live band doesn't mean live singing. Vitas always uses live band to prove he doesn't lip sync but he does. He doesn't have to do this...I think he can sing well in live

He doesn't always have to sing with a live band all the time! it is a little different from the cd version. he's just been trained so well it doesn't take that much effort for him do to do this. I have a lot of his stuff on DVD and I can see in plain detail that its all real. they do use re verb on the mic most of the time because it makes his voice sound bigger. Thats only normal.

It's him, in the original song, the part when the violins start to become more "pop-like" it's alot louder and it's sung very quiet in comparison to the music in this video, that and you can tell it's him by the pronounciation (sp?) of a single part of the song in comparison to the actual music video, or on his album.

By far the best live performer I've heard of. Go look up a few other of his live performances, you'll know what I mean.

Yes, that is falsetto for a countertenor or male soprano. He has incredible range - I think it's about a 6-7 octave scale. He has been doubted on other sites. This is not playback or voiced over...the microphone technician just set a reverb to give his voice a richer sound...majority of singers do that. You can see this comes from the diaphragm.
