  • alot of people that weren't here still don't understand how shallow and close to the city this earthquake was....that's why it was so fu***** nasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think you should submit this to the Royal Commission of inquiry as it shows exactly the devastation at 603-613 Colombo St (where the buses were crushed) this is the result of Mayor Parker's Business as Usual after the Sept EQ. The owner of those buildings wanted to demolish, the council dragged the chain, Feb happened, the buildings collapsed killing 12 people - there were buildings like this all over town.

  • I will never forget this day

  • it made me cry as chch is my home city also when done in march this yr to to my sister & nephew where ok but chch is coming back alive i miss chch go chch .

  • Where the footage of the crushed buses is taken, you can walk down there now. There's still chucks taken out of the road from where the buses bottomed out. It's just so different now :( so sad

  • Notice the liquefication of the street into sand at 0:48. My sister lives in Dunedin and my Mum in Balclutha and they both tried calling me at the same time telling me what happened, and I live in Canada! I was once in Invercargill when there was a minor quake, too. My Mum's dog was going beserk in the minutes before it happened.

  • I often come back to this video, I was the tow truck driver that turned up there as my partner and mother inlaw work at yellow pages and these images play thru my head all the time. It was rather scary going up into the cherry picker to look for survivers as we were coming down they ALL got out no 1 died at smith city (Just to cllear that up,) Thanks for this footage

  • Watching the people leading their children out of town makes me feel so so grateful that mine happened to both be home with me that day at lunchtime!! Still terrifying, but at least we were all together and they didn't see the vast scale of destruction. I can't believe that after all this time our city is still so shattered.

  • @benjas401. Yes this be Liz and Patrick. Who is benjas401?

  • At 2.47 you can see my Nissan primera!!!!!! It looks ok on 1 side the other different story

  • this is insane, i cant believe i survived this.

  • :(

  • An American show called 'Celebrity Close Calls' used part of this video for the earthquake segment. And my name got a mention in the credits. How cool is that?!!

  • Poor ChCh, theses quakes just dont wana give up !

  • Those of us living outside Christchurch, must not forget, overlook, dismiss this. This pain, this shock, we need to help, love, hope and build, Not just move on.

  • Wow, thanks for sharing that raw footage. So many of those buildings along columbo st should have been removed after the first earthquke! It seems the local government there were just wanting to get the money making wheels turning again as quickly as possible without any real thought. Such a shame.

  • Amazing footage.

  • heros that worked on the bus, every one of them!

  • brilliant footage, thanks for sharing.

  • It was a a quiet big disaster for such a weak earthquake, don't you think so?

  • @EP1997 yes I do think so. Thank goodness it wasn't any bigger!

  • @EP1997 i dont really think that the earthquake was very weak!!!

  • @EP1997 It wasn't weak. The magnitude was low, but the force of gravity that the earthquake generated was 2.2G twice that of Haiti.

  • @chchquakehub Exactly!!

  • @EP1997 A weak earthquake? It was 49 kilo tonnes! That sounds like a pretty strong earthquake to me...

  • @EP1997 it wasnt weak because it doesnt matter what magnitude it is its how shallow to the ground , it was only 5kms deep under the ground and there was heapz of damage coz christchurch already had a earthquake in 2010 which loosened up all the buildings then this 1 hit and made them all fall!! dumbitch

  • @EP1997 - Actually, although it was weak, it was shallow, so still very powerful

  • Comment removed

  • @EP1997 I believe ground movement speed was 3 times that of normal earthquakes, don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure I read it in new scientist magazine...It definitely wasn't weak.

  • @EP1997 yes, think it was due to where it was and depth. My dad said it felt like an 8mag in comparison to the 7.1mag in September.

  • @EP1997 there is a reason for this it has to do with the focus , the deeper the focus the weaker the earthquake , in this case the focus was close to the surface meaning that it was stronger

  • @EP1997 IT WAS NOT WEAK, DID YOU GO THROUGH IT. DIDN'T THINK SO EVEN THOUGH I WAS AT SCHOOL IT WAS A VERY BIG EARTHQUAKE BECAUSE IT WAS CENTRED CLOSE TO THE CITY AND NOT VERY DEEP !

  • @EP1997 Ummmmm a 6.3 magnitude is not a weak earthquake, sorry but you are mistaken

  • @EP1997 There were a number of factors that increased the severity of the earthquake relative to its actual magnitude, including the position of the hills, the depth, the consistency of the ground our city is built on, etc etc. Very bad luck!

  • @EP1997 If you google peak ground acceleration and go to the wikipedia page and go to notable earthquakes. We've all learned in Chch that magnitude means very little in the real world !

  • @EP1997 it was shallow and central.

  • @EP1997 weak,u cant have been there....it was shallow 5kms.what is weak to u?

  • @EP1997 this is because of the force behind the quake it broke all records for the quakes force. it was going at twice the strength of gravity

  • @EP1997 Sorry your comment is ages ago but you're wrong in that the G forces were extremely high.

  • @EP1997 Its a common misconception that the magnitude is what describes the intensity. The magnitude is only one part of measuring a quake. Its depth, its position, the energy that is released, its direction, and many other factors are what define its strength.

The 6.3 quake that hit Christchurch on the 22nd of February had more vertical ground movement than in the Japan earthquake that followed weeks after. That my friend, is terrifying to consider.

  • i work in south city mall and was there whn the quake hit, i had know idea how bad things were at the time, i hate the siren tht plays in the background, thts all i can remember after the quake.

  • @gildac2 I know what you mean. Everything was quiet except for the sound of the car horn .. very eerie

  • great just had afta shok while watchn this

  • Thank you for sharing.. truly amazing that more did not perish. I am glad to my family and i are safe - and that you as well were safe...

We will all be stronger because of how we have all come together to help...

    Kia Kaha CHCH

  • While i watch this we have an after shock. great.

  • @Abbyshontelle123. Aftershocks can come as a shock !! I was in town today when an aftershock hit. The hard part is not knowing how long it will last and if it will be another big one

  • good stuff, deserves more views

  • RIP to the victims in the buses

  • Man, that's harrowing!
