  • colorful sweet- cute and amazing! gretchen has a beautiful voice this can only happen in fantasy

  • just listen

  • She is incredibly sexy...

  • remins me of Astrud Gilberto - Bossa Nova!... Love it!

  • Love that performance !!!! So much feeling... Could anyone tell me if there's a special metric in it ? I don't feel it's in 4 at the beginning mostly... Sounds so amazing.

  • I love the chemistry between her and the piano player..

  • She has soul..

  • very nice

  • Breath taking. There's no better contemporary female jazz vocalist I prefer over Gretchen. No means to sound biased.

  • This performance is amazing. She's one of top-rank jazz singers on the planet. She was voted #1 Rising Star Vocalist in DownBeat Int'l Critics Poll, #9 in the Best Female Vocalist category and featured on over 50 albums of top artists like Kenny Barron, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard. It's sad when insecure people get outright angry when a brilliant artist changes all the rules, forcing them into unfamiliar territory. She redefined swing & role of the vocalist. She's a total winner.

  • Sorry if you're already aware of that, but this song was composed by Djavan, a great brazilian musician.

  • @leonzioooo The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz doesn't think so since she is the first vocalist to win the competition. I'm sure the anonymous youtube Uruguayan knows much more than judges like Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter. etc.

  • @leonzioooo We can disagree on tastes but the moment you made personal attacks I stopped reading. Have a nice day.

  • @leonzioooo When you refer to Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition as "a competition" makes it obvious you don't know a thing about jazz. It is the most prestigious, highly respected jazz competition in the world, considered equivalent to the Cliburn Competition. She was also voted Best Jazz Vocalist & best album of the year by int'l jazz critics. The incredible improvisation skills and musicianship she displays here have gone completely over your head. You and your ego missed it all.

  • @leonzioooo this is music. ever heard of it? Cuz i would assume you're deaf by these comments smh

  • Superb! No translation needed, let your heart translate the emotion and the heat! She's wonderful.

  • she is pretty amazing..beautiful soothing voice and melody!!

  • I love her voice, but her mumbles are kinda funny...mumble mumble mumble

  • I'm subtley in awe...

  • Gretchen is an amazing singer! I saw her this week in The Red Sea Jazz Festival, Eilat- Israel, and I was fascinated by her!

  • Impressive!!!! Amazing voice and just love the band... Swell!!!

  • @biggieparaty Criticism obviously comes quite easily to you, but it's interesting that you took the time to post such detailed criticism of her pronunciation of Portuguese, which is obviously not her native language, while simultaneously making so many grammatical English errors yourself - obviously not your native language. That and your "too many notes" comment were entertaining.

You're obviously the expert, but you have missed the forest for the trees.

  • @pianissimode comment is out .... Sorry if U got hurt asbout it !!!

If nothing I said is correct .. disrregard the message ... Luck to all of you !!!

Keep the notes and let her keep the wrong pronouce .. Now, If U will advise the singer

on a research about the pronounce ... Seems that U understood the context !!!

lot's of luck to you ... and sorry about the misunderstanding !!!

  • another reason I love gretchen gotta say brazilian jazz one of my fav genres of jazz music! beautiful voice!

  • wow

  • Gretchen/Djavan - Pretty sure this is what Planet Earth sounds like on its best day.

  • Lovely singer

  • Holy crap...she is channeling Astrud Gilberto!

  • Utterly super job by the entire group...Awesome...Notice how the intensity gradually builds during the course of the song...Salud!

  • What language is this?

  • @slowceejay Portuguese, more exactly brazilian portuguese

  • oops, it's at 6:57... jajajajaja....

  • Love this. So great!!!!

Oh and drummers face @ 1:49 hehe!!! Made me lol :D

  • This particular group of musicians evokes a very powerful emotional reaction within me. This is an absolutely brilliant performance!

  • Who could dislike this? I'm baffled!

  • @naturallyfriseschica .. me too

  • @naturallyfriseschica Some may not like an individual part of this such as Ms.Parlato's vocalizing. The rhythm section is fine.So this listener is one who has listened to several clips of her singing and is just not particularly moved by it.But this listener is obviously in the minority.

  • @zapatogrande1 Fair enough, I see where you're coming from. Me personally though, I like the whole composition

  • @naturallyfriseschica a Justin Bieber fan !

  • Absolutely yes! Fantastic performance!

  • Parabens!!!!

  • Saw this group last night with a different drummer. Absolutely electric and mesmerizing. I've heard this kind of energy before. She was jaw dropping as was the pianist.

  • She's not only virtuosic but also really full of soul, it touches me inside.

  • Wow!

  • ..

  • She sings like a bird.

  • Wow! fantastic!!!

  • Wait, I found them.. YEAAA!!! lol :-J

  • I sooooo...... <3 this. I wish I could get the lyrics :)

  • oh yeah a great video from a great artist

  • That is how you fuckin' samba.

  • I guess Bieber liked this video too, seeing there are no dislikes :]

  • So nicely recorded.

  • lol, Guiliana is bored. He is such a beast. Nice song though

  • eu gosto Gretchen!

  • This obviously professional videography. Anyone know what it's from (channel 3?) and where I can get the rest of the concert?

  • @smulkin1

    That's "3 sat"...a german channel.

  • SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE!!!!ONE OF THE BEST JAZZ SINGERS FROM THIS TIME!!!!!

  • Outstanding. Gretchen is a master of phrasing and nuance. My favorite cut of hers... NO ONE can do what she does!

  • @SRK212 I can't figure out how she handles the rhythm. She's always slightly "up" (not sure if that's the right expression) ie. just half a beat ahead of the piano. How does she do it?? I think bossa rhythms are often like that though.

  • @Ningxiabird

What she is doing is singing off the beat. Sometimes ahead of it, sometimes behind it. If you listen to Gilberto as a starting point, you will hear this a lot. Gretchen also sings with musicians who work with African rhythms, polyrhythmic rhythms, rhythms that are not always familiar to the traditional ear. I wish I could break it down for you in a more specific way, but I can't! It's almost as if she skips ahead of the beat and then plays catch up with the rhythm. She's something!

  • omg, incredible as always, Gretchen

  • beautiful!
