p.s.: Does anybody here think that it somewhat looks like the recent Silverchair style (check 5th CD of Silverchair). By the way, JK's hair and beard style looks like Daniel Johns' on the song Straight Line. Well I think it
I see what you're saying with the whole Young Modern (Silverchair) thing. YM has more of a pop/dance element to it but it is still way more whimsical. Justin King is gettin' that pop element to his music as well however. Some got angry that he's not doing any more slap acoustic guitar but people evolve. While I still love his old stuff from Le Bleu, I have to admit this song is catchy and a great pop song.
Wow that's.... a huuuuuuuuge change in music genre. Not even a guitar solo? Guess he wants to be the new Clapton, hardcore guitar and then fluff pop. I'm cool with that, whatever floats his boat...
*studio magic.* As far as I know they have never used that effect live. It's too bad too, because that's my favorite part of the song. It's some kind of detuner/pitch shifter with reverb I'm guessing.
It sounds like its his regular voice mixed in with a vocorder, which adds the formants (high frequency concentrated noises in a frequency spectrum, like the sound of a hiss in an "s") into a "carrier" signal, which in this case sounds like it's a synthesizer playing a chord around the melody. I could be wrong though. Oh, and you can do that effect live if you have the equipment.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Sounds very complicated. Like I said, they haven't used it live but it's also a somewhat recent addition to the song. Earlier recordings of Same Mistakes didn't have it and I'm pretty sure they only added it for the final album version. Perhaps they will integrate that live at some point
yeah its a vocoder with a synthesizer playing chords as input for the filter bank. its not too hard to reproduce live, i think micro korgs come with a vocoder built in and you see those in shows a lot.
he or someone would indeed have to be playing the chords into the vocoder. the only other way to achieve that effect live would be to have a pc/mac running midi software which could tell the vocoder which notes to re-produce. though then they'd have to be playing in sync with the pc/mac via a click track ie. in the drummers ear. not hard to do but i bet they would want the pc hidden side/back stage heh
who care about the money? it's the coolest and most nice video they made so far :D and I see it as a big step for them, people need to listen to these guys, they're really pro :)
Hey guys. We shot Same Mistakes and Bright and Dirty Lights over a couple of weekends in Dec 2006. We're a small creative outfit, and JK is a buddy of ours.

Yeah but wouldn't he then have to be playing keyboard at the time in order to use that effect? It seems impractical considering he is playing guitar.

where is the money coming from to film these videos?

I would guess the record company.. they are signed to a major label.

They're not with Epic Records anymore. I think this video was filmed by themselves (I could be wrong though).
