My guess is that he doesn't necessarily need to for this song. In the kind of picking he does, normally a finger is assigned to a certain string, and he just may not be using that one.

Adam's guitar playing is phenomenal. I don't know how much credit he gets for it, but I've been listening to Two Gallants for almost a year and his guitar playing just just... phenomenal.

I know exactly what you mean. I´m from germany and this girl was the most annoying bitch on MTV over here. Maybe you're lucky to hear that her show was canceled. "I want to punch her in the face." are the exact phrase, most people I know say when she appears on screen. You are not alone.
