In many ways he was up there with the greatest and undoubtedly would have won a world championship. Vatanen, Salonen, Rohrl & Kankkunen would all possibly agree. I actually prefer Toivonen's style of flat out driving and the mass attack.. RIP Henri & Sergio. If you look at some posts on YouTube you will realise you will never be forgeten
R.I.P Henri Toivonen and Sergeo Cresto. Thanks for pushing your selfs to give us all great rally's God bless both of you and Thanks Marvdogger for this
Henri was real flying finn! Henri was driver who can do almost anything those Group-B cars. He would be a World Champion. Like we finnish people says "Henri oli oikea lentävä suomalainen. Team Finlandia"
Fantastic video as always Marv. But I am unsure of the theories of the driver being asleep etc. It is clear from the footage that the car was laying down rubber on the road as it tried to turn left and probably understeered off. It would be different if that the car had just gone straight off, the Lanci was trying to turn in a radius only it was going too wide. Look at Colin McRaes 2002 Corsica crash on Youtube. What is different ?? his car didnt flip and he was also very lucky in my opinion.
Have to agree having seen the footage. We will never know what happened, but Henri was clearly turning the car around the corner. It could have been a simple mistake on the pace notes, with the way Sergio read them or a driving error, but the design of the Delta S4 turned what may have been a survivable accident into a fatal one.
Your research and facts makes your videos that much better than any others. They complete your videos in such a brilliant way. This is a great series/video,and a great tribute to a driver who will undoubtably go down in history as one of the truly greats. And the music is always spot on to catch the mood, and SET the mood. Thanks for 7 great minutes to start my day.(i wish english was my 1st language, but this is the best i can do)
Its fair to say that had Toivonen & Cresto not had the accident that Group B would have not been banned that year. However i think FISA would have eventually clamped down or merged Group B with Group S. It's a known fact that after the drivers refused to drive in Portugal that alot of people wer'nt happy and wanted to somehow punish the teams and drivers. Which they did in away by changing the points system at Corsica.
Another thing worth noting about the S4's at Corsica is that according to eyewitnessess the cars appeared to have no undersheilds fitted (not required on a smooth asphalt stage), nor saftety fuel tanks.
One wonders weather these could have turned a fatal accident into just a case of the car leaving the road.
The blame for the above is down to FISA though since they check the cars before the rally and even before they are homologated so if they did'nt like it they'd would have stopped it.
Bloody hell, it's terrifying that they are left the road probably totally unconscious. So their death caused by the leaking fuel system afterall, not because of the average speed of Group B cars.
I think the problem is, that the manufacturers never had enough time and money together to develop the technology that is winner and totally safe at the same time. And they decided to win the competition
Brilliant but gutted at the same time, top stuff as always and the explanation to Henri and Sergio's death was excellent. Marv do you think that if the death of Henri and Sergio would not have happened group B would of ended? Anyone else please comment also.
It is. That should be his daughter Arla. I once saw a picture of a memorial they did to Henri in finland in 2006, and you could see his kids all grown up and also his brother harri.
We Miss You! Henri & Sergio.
