sweet dude, i have linux mint install on a partition on my pc, but what dock is that your using...? cairo dock, because when i install cairo dock. it lags so much on my linux. i have 2gb ram and 9400gt geforce 1gb ram graphics card, with drivers installed....
Can you successfully install and play games on linux? Yes. Of course. Are games specifically made for this OS? No.
In my opinion and experience, if games were made for linux they would run BETTER and be better supported.
This doesn't matter though, recent trends show the decline in PC games as their slowly losing out to console games. And, since the introduction of Vista - games aren't handled well... Maybe Windows will get it right one day...
im on autrecourt's side with this....there is einough talk like that online as it is...and then people cant figure out why kids arounf the age of 12-16(like my self) are right next to evil....it was a simple question about linux....and you didnt even have to ansour at all...but my ansour to the question is...yes you can play games on linux...but windows is way more commin....so the only thin you are mostly going to find for games on linux is old stuff like doom or ect
what the fuck are you talking about. you have a game console to play video games. i am not completely against playing games. really you can play games very very easy with wine.
so the ancewer to your question it yes you can.
i just played halo 1 on linux mint about 5 min ago (old game but a some fun). its jyust some many people would not switch to a way better OS just because of games...thats a little childish. why pay 200$ for MS office when it is free in linux.
and by the way! Thanks for the video! it's awesome. I've been using Mint myself and couldn't get back to Ubuntu for some reasons. I actually hoped it will replace my Windows XP since I can do there more cool stuff but I still got applications I have no idea how to set working WELL on WINE
ok, read your comment - its mint Celena. I'm using Mint Daryna. How do you active all those extra eye-candy things like the 3D desktop cube. I got wobbely windows and all that but I epecially like your mac-style icons bar at the bottom of your desktop. Couldn't find a setting to activate that anywhere
nice. yes a week after I made this I started over and moved to Daryna also. a must say my desktop looks 10x cleaner and I need to post a video of the effects I have now.
for the extra eye-candy in the mint menu click on preferences (or settings -- can't remember which) but you're looking for "Appearance". within that click on the visual effects tab and make sure you have "extra" checked. by default daryna doesn't install the manager for these effects. so open up synaptic package manager and install compizconfig-settings-manager
whichever is easier for you to use. then within the preferences you'll see an "advanced desktop effects" manager and you can look at all those things you can play with. if you enable some things and they don't show up make sure you restart your computer for them to take effect (then you can edit them after the restart and for some reason the edits take place then). this happened to me when I enabled cube reflection.
i'm considering posting a tutorial with a lot of this included, from the install to all my effects. make sure you do have a proprietary driver installed (whether you have nvidia or ati) for these effects to work (use envy in system tools).
for the "mac-like" dock, it's called advant window navigator (awn). I'm trying to remember the things I went through to get it to work. if you can't find it let me know I'll try to help.
I've been using Linux Mint for about 9 months now. I started out with Ubuntu (Mint is based off of Ubuntu, Ubuntu is based off of Debian). So technically I can say I've tried all 3 haha. But I've also used Red Hat, but had a few complications with that. I've also installed PCLinuxOS 2007 on my sister's computer and she seems to like it, but she tells me she wants my setup now too...
s for laptop then desktop I don't know what to tell you. I installed Ubuntu on my laptop and had complications with the fans not working, but works perfect on my desktop. I know laptops seem to have issues sometimes (as per my experience). But I'll try Mint on my laptop sometime in the near future.
In regards to the Notebook question, i've researched for my puchase of a Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook and it's compatibility with ubuntu or Mint... There was sum issues i've read up on mostly related to slower fan speeds and audio issues primarily... also slower internet... I did locate this site that provide resolutions to all those issues for the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsby, I'll test out Mint on it as well when i get a chance.
Great setup, Linux isn't my primary OS but it is very good and deserves more support

awesome, i'm glad people are still viewing this - even though it's outdated...
linux mint is the best distro (for me)... i mainly use it as my entertainment center now that i have a macbook pro...
to answer your question, i think cairo gave me problems too... try avant window navigator (AWN)
google for the site
sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator
it ran on my OLD pc (512 mb ram haha), i think it should work fine for yours

Video effects have always been ahead of all other systems on Linux, however game support is lacking even through Wine/Cedega. That's just how it is.

I'm just about to install Daryna on a laptop. Then might switch our main computer to it if it turns out nicely.
How long have you been using Linux Mint? What other distros have you used?
