I use to make match rockets by slicing the heads off matches and stuffing them inside a dismantled pen. I used three stick matches as a tripod to stand up the pen rocket and a fourth match upside down stuffed into the pen casing for a fuse.

I used to use a big kitchen match with the head wrapped in foil. I'd whittle the match stick down till it was about 1/16 inch dia to reduce weight. Some of them would go 30 feet. Good way to kill a summer afternoon.
