I'm 58 and grew up shaving with a double edge blade. I just went to buy some quadruple blade cartridges and finally got fed up with the price and ordered an Edwin Jagger razor along with the brush and shaving soap AND 100 Derby Extra razors, all this stuff was only about double what a large box of cartridges cost. I also remember how close double edge razors shaved and the best part was slipping them through the slot in the back of the medicine cabinet. Great video.
mantic, i know you're not partial to canned shaving cream, but can you recommend a brand that would be the most "wet shaver friendly"? i travel a lot, and i don't like to take my mug and soap with me, for fear my mug might get broken.
@rockergod789 depending on where you are and what products may be available, look for Cremo-Cream, Anthony Logistics, Real Shaving Co. products. Of the widely-available drug store products, King Of Shaves gel is pretty good. At least get something out of a squeeze tube--nothing out of a pressurized can!
@mantic59 i did some trial and error, and i found that a can of classic barbasol (!!!) gives me the best shave out of any drugstore brand. it's still not as good as Cella Crema da Sapone, though.
I think a little alcohol such as in Witch Hazel is good at least for me. Ive been doing some tinkering with different after shaves. Seems to me that the ones that contain a small amount of alcohol seems to calm my face quicker. Now im not speaking of just ol regular after shave that is 50% alcohol but say the 10% that is in Thayers/Humphries.
I charactered out (grin) ...anyway, I WILL NEVER go back to a mach 3 and canned shaving cream. I sincerely thank you for the inspiration to try this. My face instructed me to tell you that you changed its life. (grin) ....seriously, thank you for taking the time to do all these vids.
WOW WOW, and Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!, I started watching your videos last week, and studied them fofr 4 nights straight until I figured out what I needed to get into this kind of shaving, and how to do it. TODAY, I got all my stuff in from West Coast, put my merkur progress on "2", wet face and lathered up with some prorasco. I do admit I had to make several passes, and it was about a 15-20 min. shave as learning, BUT MAN... I have not had a face so smoothe since I was 12,.
@niallie1984 open comb razors are meant for really thick, multi-day (or week) beard growths; the comb "channels" thick hair towards the blade. Typically open comb razors are more aggressive than closed/safety bar razors.
I just wonder. Palmolive still sells 2 different shaving cream tubes here (normal and sensitive, both in dark greenish colors)) but I've never seen a red tube ?
I started wetshaving in the past week, and your videos have been so helpful. At first I just got the cream and brush and kept using my cartridge razor, and that was a noticeable improvement. Ordered a Merkur shortly after, and am very happy. I have a lot of room for improvement, and I could upgrade my cheap badger brush, but I'm pleased so far. My grandmother told me yesterday that this is how my grandfather shaved, and that makes me feel pretty cool.
I like to watch these intro videos again from time to time to relive the excitement from when I first started wetshaving. Thanks, mantic, for being such a huge help for me and everyone who has watched your videos.
@mantic59 Great :-) what products do you recommend for beginners? I don't mind using mens products, I've seen some pink handled badgers brushes but I'm not bothered about looks! I'll watch your vids so I can figure out the right way to lather and such. I know with legs it's different to the face, but with legs it all grows in the same direction, so it won't be too hard to figure out!
@jocybum I see from your youtube profile you're in the UK. There are a number of products that are reasonably inexpensive and available. Boots has a shave soap "stick" and a lathering shave cream, and many carry a Wilkinson Sword safety razor (plastic but a good starter razor). Tesco carries Palmolive shave creams and Wilkinson brushes. Many Chemists carry Erasmic shave cream. Also check out theshavingroom(dot)co(dot)uk discussion forum.
Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to try wet shaving. I got a 180 long handle, a badger brush, and proraso soap for Christmas. I just had my first ever wet shave and WOW. That was the best shave I've ever had. Sure, it took me 30 minutes, but I'm sure that will improve. So smooth with ZERO irritation is what impresses me. If I got this smooth with my Fusion I would be in pain. It was easy when I followed your tips/instruction. Thanks for your hard work on these videos! You're the best!
When I was very young,I remember seeing my father using a bowl to generate his lather and telling my mother that shaving was one of life's great pleasures. After my youngest sister was born, making it six people using one bathroom,he took to face lathering. He used a superspeed and scoffed at the new multi blade razors.
May I ask what is the problem with after-shaves with alcohol?
I shave with a straight edge razor and absolutely LOVE the feeling of alcohol on my face after a good shave, but I have never been quite sure if it is unhealthy or not. Is there any danger or risk that comes with it? Why do you not recomend it?
@TheStrangerInTheRye too much alcohol will dry out the skin. Admittedly my suggestion is a "rule of thumb"--a little alcohol in a product is OK, just not as the primary ingredient.
LOL! "vibrates like a marital aide" Great stuff here. I have a twelve year old son that asked me how to shave the other day. I'm gonna show him the right way as I was never shown how to shave. Mostly inpart because my five o'clock shadow comes two weeks later.
Hi Mantic ! I"m shaving for almost a year daily, and I love it ( thanks to you) and I have one question: Can daily shaving cause premature ageing? Thanks a lot !
thanks for the great vids - i've moved to a merkur heavy + proraso (i'm on a budget, so it's great for me) after 5+ years with a mach 3 and whatever gel/foamy, and love it. but mostly, i just wanna say i'm really impressed that you respond to people's questions - keep it up.
I just bought a Merkur 180 razor from theindianfoodstore. Paid only $30 something dollars and got free shipping, better than any other website I saw. Picked up a badger brush as well. Thanks so much for your videos - I hope this works out and I don't cut myself up!
if you use alcohol one more time, i'll supplex you and put you in the camel clutch and then im gonne fuck your ass the old country way until you are humble again and never ever disrespect me again!
I have always used an electric razor, but just resently started shaving with a ragular razor. Anyway, I've noticed that after I shave the skin on my face gets really tight. Is there any way to prevent this?
2:25 "vibrates like a marital aid" too damn funny. ill remember that when i introduce my girlfriend to wetshaving when i do her coochie lolol. lather it all up with that brush tickling the hell out of her, get it all nice a foamy, then get the vibrating Gillette and watch her twich while i shave her. mmm that skin will be as smooooth as.... um i wont say lolololol... too funny
@stevemcqueenforever youre probably using too much pressure. try just lightly touching the razor to the skin and use short strokes. be sure to first go with the grain, then against the grain, then across the grain, relathering before repeating of course. also make sure your face is moist enough too. and to use a good aftershave to keep the skin moist and cool it down. but like i said, be gentle, you probably have sensitive skin
Mantic, thank you for taking the time to create videos that focus on traditional shaving! I am turning 30 in a month, and I have been using can goop and the latest multi-bladed contraption since I started shaving. For Christmas 09 I got a brush and mug (w/ soup) and have used your videos to really learn the technique. I love the brush on my face! You have convinced me to order a safety razor now (or wait till my birthday next month). I really look forward to shaving now! Thank you so much!
KMF "Moisture Shave" is a shave cream, I don't know if they make an aftershave as well (wouldn't suprise me if they do). Rinse w/cold water to close pores then the aftershave balm will protect the skin. See my "advanced shaving techniques" video for ideas for the chin--I find "blade buffing" works well there.
Mantic, Thank you for these helpful videos. I've just begun wet shaving and your videos provided excellent guidance. With each shave I'm getting better...I actually look forward to shaving now. This is turning into a hobby.
Ok getting kind of frustrated... My neck is red and bumpy, almost wrorse than with my fusion. Razor burn like I've never had. I'm trying out Derby blades. How long do I try the blades before I figure out they are not a success. What other words of wisdom can you offer?
kschmidt4- How long have you been using the double edge razor? It can take a month or so for your face to get used to it (and for your technique to settle in).
I'm 17 years old, and have a variety of shaving razors on me currently. An electric foil razor, straight single edge razor, safety razor. The blades I use for the ones other than the electric (since it's foil, so exclude it), I use either a Derby Extra blade or a Shark. I haven't started yet, so basically I'm trimming for now, because I am waiting for a badger brush to come. Question is, Is it alright to be using all of these razors for each week's shave, since I prefer to shave once every week?
Hello everybody i have a question what do you think about the spanish FLOID VIGOROSO after shave ?And Proraso after shave slash? And the pre and after shaving creme from Proraso? thx bye
I recently switched from a fusion to a merkur 1906 classic, using trumpers cream and a cheap brush from the drugstore. I have been practicing for a week or two now, but still seem to get irritation on my neck below the jaw line, and razor burn that I never had before. Is this part of the learning process of wetshaving? Should I keep going? Thank you for all your videos!
You might want to experiment with the type of blade you are using as this can have a massive effect. I used derbys in my HD and was getting cuts and rash worse than a cartridge :S I switched to wilkinson sword blades and it solved the problem completely
I just now used a vintage Gillette razor over a Parker 91R. Wow! The difference is like night and day. The Parker feels like I am shaving with a set of alligator teeth! I eventually have to put the razor down and step back from it like a dangerous weapon. New wetshavers: if you have not yet purchased a razor, please do yourself a solid and steer clear from that Parker 91R.
Why shouldn't do dry your face after showering? Couldn't I just wet my face again when I'm ready and my lather is done? I'm a newbie and have tons of questions, this being a pretty silly one. Unless I misheard the video. Thanks.
jagcardinals22- usually not, glycerin facial soaps lack a few key ingredients to make a good shaving soap. However I have heard of them being used "in a pinch."
mantic59-Thank you for sharing all your tips. All the videos are great. But I was wondering if you can do a video on how to groom/trim and shape mens eyebrow, just like yours:) I don't want others to get the wrong idea but still have trimmed and shaped eyebrow--not feminine. Any useful tips??
mantic59 - I've been thinking about getting into traditional shaving and your videos are a great help.
Is there any big difference between using a safety razor vs a cut throat razor as far aside from the obvious safety factor? Does either tend to give a slightly better shave or cause less irritation?
ToneFreak12- I cannot say from personal experience because I don't use a cut throat. Those who have generally tell me that the shave is slightly better but the chance for irritation is about the same. And it takes a lot of practice to get good at cut throat shaving.
Brilliant guides. Converted today, and it feels brilliant even with a cheapo brush, coffee cup, and a gillette blue II disposable. Only bit of kit I have so far from your list is Proraso which felt brilliant and so much better than the modern stuff.
I've had major problems with ingrowing hairs and bumps with both wet/electric in the past and so also used PFB vanish after shaving today, seems to be working ok - do you have any opinion on these products [i.e. tendskin, PFB vanish]?
I have a question, my boyfriend has very sensitive skin, he says he always gets cuts when he shaves. What kind of razor or a particular technique do u recommend for people who have sensitive skin?
fabirox20- Hard to say without knowing what he's shaving with now. Generally speaking, a good lather with traditional shave soap/cream will give a better shave than canned foam, and a razor with fewer blades will be easier on the skin than one with more blades.
bsmyn0708- Yeah, I'm hearing comflicting information from C&E: some say they're still for sale, some say they're out of stock, and some say they've been discontinued. I'm not sure what's going on.
Great video series Mantic59. I'm moving from cartridge blades to a DE and would like an expert opinion if I may. Could you please advise as to which product would allow the blade to glide across my face easiest, so, which is best to use under a shaving cream, a pre shave cream (Proraso), an oil (Truefit & Hill's Ultra Comfort Pre Shave Oil) or one of Trumper's Skin Foods?
Also on another point. Which DE razor is the better brand for a safety razor beginner, a Parker or a Merkur?
aleseeker- There's really no substitute for good pre-shave prep, but my experience with the three products you mention is Proraso's preshave cream worked best for me, followed by Skin Food then pre-shave oil. YMMV. Between a Parker or a Merkur I would choose the Merkur.
Thank you for your videos. I watched them all and decided to switch to traditional wet shaving with a Merkur 34C. I just finished my first shave with it and I'm really excited. You're absolutly right, this was the best shave I've ever had. Shaving is now really enjoyable for me.
i realise that perhaps the comments have run their course. but i wanted to say that this is my father's preferred method of shaving and now i'm learning this method and enjoying it very much. accept no substitutes.
people may tell you that using 40 year old technology is wrong because it's old. this argument is absurd on its face! try it and i guarantee you'll accept no substitutes.
mantic59 or anyone else, what would you use before, during and after a shave if you have oily skin? I have a problem in which my skin gets really oily after a shave.
These videos are on point! I say splurge on a quality DE razor and badger brush...I use the futur kit and it will probably out live me. I also highly recommend a light pre-shave oil, my fav is truefitt and hill...please don't be afraid of the price of any of these items because they all last a ridiculously long time. I also use a natural alum stone (block) which really works well. The fact is a DE razor will last forever, soap soap last about a year and so does the pre-shave oil! ENJOY
I bought the Crabtree & Evelyn shave cream but I can't seem to produce the same quality of lather that you seem to make in all of your videos. Is there some kind of trick with creams? I have used Proraso shave soap with moderate success.
Mantic, what do you think of art of shaving cream? I've been to their store and their products are so much more expensive than Col. Conks or Proraso. I have one of their creams and it performs about the same. I told them what i use and they're like "why you using that stuff? too many chemicals" I have yet to hear a complaint about Proraso. I'd like to hear an expert opinion on the subjeck ;)
Another thing that affects lather quality is water hardness. For harder water you will need mush more soap or cream. Load the brush with just a bit more cream, about the size of an almond, and start to lather. The brush should be damp, but NOT WET. You can always add water, but it;s very hard to remove water. Try it out, and good luck!
I used to use a Philips Norelco shaver. It was great and all....really fast but I didn't like the 5pm shadow showing up at 1pm! Wetshaving is the way to go.
I accidentally deleted rahulsarathy82's comment: "now a days it is difficult to find DE razors and badger brush products, but if even if u get one of these in net, you may never know how long these products especially DE blades will survive in the market for the upcoming 10 years or so .Don't u think that big companies like that 3 or 4 blade razors will replace DE razor products completely in another 1o to 15 years are so ?" Personally I think there will always be a niche market.
very nice videos. I'm wondering do these same principals apply to shaving the head. I used to shave everyday in college but it became such a chore. now I look like a balding hippie. My biggest concern is would you happen to know if the products work on course hair. basically i'm a black guy. would like a clean shave but the razor bumps are a killer. currently use clippers when I get around to it. talk about a drag.
Hey mark, at the 0:52 sec mark, where you are showing the proraso shave cream, and razor, what are those other products present in the frame? I made one of the bottles out to say "Lavender Witch Hazel". What do you use witch hazel for pertaining to shaving? And what were the other products and what were they used for?
Lars1540- In front of the Proraso is a sample vial of a cologne (I don't recall which one) and a limited edition shaving brush by Shavemac. The razor is a Merkur Progress. Behind the Progress is indeed witch hazel (Thayers), "DaVinci Water" (a hydrosol from QEDUSA), and Trumper's "Skin Food" (limes scent). I use witch hazel as a final cleanup of my skin before applying aftershave balm (or in this case Skin Food). I'm working on a video about aftershaves that will explain further.
If you use a sharp blade (changing your blades every 3-5 shaves) and follow the right procedures, you can wet shave every day!
I'm sure this videomaker has some instruction videos on that but here are the basics: warm your face with water, apply shaving cream with a brush (lather), shave (one pass only!) with the grain, re-lather en shave again. re-lather en shave against the grain, apply shaving balm and afterward apply moisturizer.
walkerdav2003- You can absolutely wetshave every day. With proper preparation and technique (much like claest007 describes below), you can easily avoid shave bumps. Also, in your case fewer blades is better than more blades! Try a single blade safety razor or a two blade sensor.
Well I just had my first wet shave last night and I can honestly say that it was as good, if not better than a straight blade barber shave. My skin feels like baby skin and the shave was very close. I went with the grain and did not cut myself at all. Everything ended up costing me about $280, but I bought high end products (Merkur razor/blades, Trufit&Hill silvertip badger brush & SS pewter mug, proraso creme etc) which will last a lifetime. It was a very enjoyable experience. Thanks Mantic59!
Yes, I wanted to just spend x dollars up front to get good quality products rather than having to go through the expenses again. I had shaved 3 times thus far and it was well worth the investment
Interesting, most shavegeeks find that the gain in performance with a silvertip over a $60 super badger isn't much. Then again, you now have a really high quality beautiful brush that you like. So congrats. :]
I bought my silvertip badger brush at Trufitt & Hill. It cost around $150 dollars with taxes. They had even more high end brushes in the $300 dollars range, but I thought mine was good enough. I expect the brush to last a very long time. One thing I have found with traditional wetshaving is that I get a much closer shave and I have no ingrown hairs anymore. Its a win win situation...
Very nice! That's actually a pretty good price for a silvertip, I've seen them run easily twice as high. You're right though, when you consider how long it will last, the price isn't that much. Quality products in the end are cheaper than buying several cheap versions. :]
hey, when I shave, I always miss some areas (around the edges of my mouth and just below my nose) no matter how hard I try, I cannot get them, and when I do get them I end up cutting my self. Any tips?
GayLorckTheFirst- First, be sure not to press down; too much pressure will miss spots. You might also try a little "blade buffing" (see my 'Advanced Concepts' video).
Thanks alot for these videos. Ive had trouble with razor burn since i began shaving, and this technique really helps. now i only get the occasional bump, if any. Again, thanks
TheFifthEmperor- An ultrasonic jewelry cleaner can work very well (you might have to use several cycles though). Or you can try soaking it 10-15 minutes in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts very hot water. Another popular way is to soak it well with a biodegradable, non-toxic household cleaner like Simply Green. In all cases, scrub well with a toothbrush and rinse very thoroughly. Discard the toothbrush when finished.
i tried the king of shave gel stuff in a tube thinkin it might be a quicker and just as good shave. but the shave was hardly close and my face dried out completely and i got bad razor burn. im sticking with wet shaving.
This is a "knowing" video. =p

Mantic have you ever tried to shave in or after taking a sauna?
Imagine doing it IN a sauna after sitting there at least 30 minutes.
Your pores probably could not get open more then that.
And lather would be warm non-stop...

many thanks!!! does anyone know how to avoid irritation under the lower lip? this area always is reddish
stevemcqueenforever 2 years ago

Many thanks for the introduction to the world of wetshaving,
You've helped me spend over $100 on the items shown here,
The kiss my face Shave Moisture, I bought this, is this a after cream, like a soap, or a balm, for after the shave?
When you say rinse with cold water, is this before putting on after-balm? Closing the pores, then putting on balm?? Is that not defeating the object?
Also - Do you have any tips on shaving the point of the chin? Like I always mess up here..
Thanks,
itsGoodYaar 2 years ago
KMF "Moisture Shave" is a shave cream, I don't know if they make an aftershave as well (wouldn't suprise me if they do). Rinse w/cold water to close pores then the aftershave balm will protect the skin. See my "advanced shaving techniques" video for ideas for the chin--I find "blade buffing" works well there.

About a month. I've been changing the blades I'm trying about evry 4 shaves. Or should I give them more of a chance?

kschmidt4- it depends on the brand of the blade and your stubble but 4 shaves sounds about right. Check out my video "How Many Shaves In A DE Blade?"

Ok getting kind of frustrated... My neck is red and bumpy, almost wrorse than with my fusion. Razor burn like I've never had. I'm trying out Derby blades. How long do I try the blades before I figure out they are not a success. What other words of wisdom can you offer?
kschmidt4 2 years ago
kschmidt4- How long have you been using the double edge razor? It can take a month or so for your face to get used to it (and for your technique to settle in).
mantic59 2 years ago
I'm 17 years old, and have a variety of shaving razors on me currently. An electric foil razor, straight single edge razor, safety razor. The blades I use for the ones other than the electric (since it's foil, so exclude it), I use either a Derby Extra blade or a Shark. I haven't started yet, so basically I'm trimming for now, because I am waiting for a badger brush to come. Question is, Is it alright to be using all of these razors for each week's shave, since I prefer to shave once every week?

Is this part of the learning process of wetshaving? Should I keep going? Thank you for all your videos!

kschmidt4 2 years ago
You might want to experiment with the type of blade you are using as this can have a massive effect. I used derbys in my HD and was getting cuts and rash worse than a cartridge :S I switched to wilkinson sword blades and it solved the problem completely
MrSmudger687 2 years ago
Also try feather blades and give them at least two weeks. Let the weight of the razor do the work. Do not press down while shaving.

New wetshavers: if you have not yet purchased a razor, please do yourself a solid and steer clear from that Parker 91R.

mantic59 - I've been thinking about getting into traditional shaving and your videos are a great help.
Is there any big difference between using a safety razor vs a cut throat razor as far aside from the obvious safety factor? Does either tend to give a slightly better shave or cause less irritation?
ToneFreak12 2 years ago
ToneFreak12- I cannot say from personal experience because I don't use a cut throat. Those who have generally tell me that the shave is slightly better but the chance for irritation is about the same. And it takes a lot of practice to get good at cut throat shaving.

Brilliant guides. Converted today, and it feels brilliant even with a cheapo brush, coffee cup, and a gillette blue II disposable. Only bit of kit I have so far from your list is Proraso which felt brilliant and so much better than the modern stuff.

Thanks! Your videos r awesome
fabirox20 2 years ago
fabirox20- Hard to say without knowing what he's shaving with now. Generally speaking, a good lather with traditional shave soap/cream will give a better shave than canned foam, and a razor with fewer blades will be easier on the skin than one with more blades.

Thanks
aleseeker 2 years ago
aleseeker- There's really no substitute for good pre-shave prep, but my experience with the three products you mention is Proraso's preshave cream worked best for me, followed by Skin Food then pre-shave oil. YMMV. Between a Parker or a Merkur I would choose the Merkur.

mantic59 or anyone else, what would you use before, during and after a shave if you have oily skin? I have a problem in which my skin gets really oily after a shave.
vancityguy 3 years ago
I would suggest any non-comedogenic face wash. It's very good at cutting down grease, and it doesn't clog up pores.
After that I apply a little bit of non-comedogenic lotion; rub it in so that it doesn't leave any greasy residue.
Cetaphil is a good and common brand.

ENJOY

Hi Mantic,

Mantic, what do you think of art of shaving cream? I've been to their store and their products are so much more expensive than Col. Conks or Proraso. I have one of their creams and it performs about the same. I told them what i use and they're like "why you using that stuff? too many chemicals" I have yet to hear a complaint about Proraso. I'd like to hear an expert opinion on the subjeck ;)
Hewhosmokeswomen 2 years ago
I really don't understand why all the hassle about shaving soap.
If you are not a snob about shaving then you should have a look at my video on why the soap I use gets me over three months on a single blade.
magiclifestyle101 2 years ago
Another thing that affects lather quality is water hardness. For harder water you will need mush more soap or cream. Load the brush with just a bit more cream, about the size of an almond, and start to lather. The brush should be damp, but NOT WET. You can always add water, but it;s very hard to remove water. Try it out, and good luck!

Personally I think there will always be a niche market.

Lars1540 3 years ago
Lars1540- In front of the Proraso is a sample vial of a cologne (I don't recall which one) and a limited edition shaving brush by Shavemac. The razor is a Merkur Progress. Behind the Progress is indeed witch hazel (Thayers), "DaVinci Water" (a hydrosol from QEDUSA), and Trumper's "Skin Food" (limes scent). I use witch hazel as a final cleanup of my skin before applying aftershave balm (or in this case Skin Food). I'm working on a video about aftershaves that will explain further.
mantic59 3 years ago
how often can u wetshave? everyday? im black and dont want to get shaving bumps as i have in the past.
walkerdav2003 3 years ago
If you use a sharp blade (changing your blades every 3-5 shaves) and follow the right procedures, you can wet shave every day!
I'm sure this videomaker has some instruction videos on that but here are the basics: warm your face with water, apply shaving cream with a brush (lather), shave (one pass only!) with the grain, re-lather en shave again. re-lather en shave against the grain, apply shaving balm and afterward apply moisturizer.
claest007 3 years ago
thanks man!!! wish me luck
walkerdav2003 3 years ago
Every day. Infact, DE razors are said to be better for black skin than disposables because DE is less likely to give shave bumps.
ExplodingTeeth 3 years ago
walkerdav2003- You can absolutely wetshave every day. With proper preparation and technique (much like claest007 describes below), you can easily avoid shave bumps. Also, in your case fewer blades is better than more blades! Try a single blade safety razor or a two blade sensor.
mantic59 3 years ago
Well I just had my first wet shave last night and I can honestly say that it was as good, if not better than a straight blade barber shave. My skin feels like baby skin and the shave was very close. I went with the grain and did not cut myself at all. Everything ended up costing me about $280, but I bought high end products (Merkur razor/blades, Trufit&Hill silvertip badger brush & SS pewter mug, proraso creme etc) which will last a lifetime. It was a very enjoyable experience. Thanks Mantic59!
Hellenicone 3 years ago
You bought a silvertip for your first time?
ExplodingTeeth 3 years ago
Yes, I wanted to just spend x dollars up front to get good quality products rather than having to go through the expenses again. I had shaved 3 times thus far and it was well worth the investment
Hellenicone 3 years ago
Interesting, most shavegeeks find that the gain in performance with a silvertip over a $60 super badger isn't much. Then again, you now have a really high quality beautiful brush that you like. So congrats. :]
ExplodingTeeth 3 years ago
I bought my silvertip badger brush at Trufitt & Hill. It cost around $150 dollars with taxes. They had even more high end brushes in the $300 dollars range, but I thought mine was good enough. I expect the brush to last a very long time. One thing I have found with traditional wetshaving is that I get a much closer shave and I have no ingrown hairs anymore. Its a win win situation...
Hellenicone 3 years ago
Very nice! That's actually a pretty good price for a silvertip, I've seen them run easily twice as high. You're right though, when you consider how long it will last, the price isn't that much. Quality products in the end are cheaper than buying several cheap versions. :]

How do I clean an old safety razor, with lots of lather remains on it?
TheFifthEmperor 3 years ago
TheFifthEmperor- An ultrasonic jewelry cleaner can work very well (you might have to use several cycles though). Or you can try soaking it 10-15 minutes in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts very hot water. Another popular way is to soak it well with a biodegradable, non-toxic household cleaner like Simply Green. In all cases, scrub well with a toothbrush and rinse very thoroughly. Discard the toothbrush when finished.
