..well, just matchless perfection. These notes will never be played this way again, and after I first heard this version in 1963, I just will not accept any other versions....this is truly injecting fire into the human soul.....these three belong to the ages.....
One of my favorite Sopranos of all time, and of course Melchoir is stupendous. We don't have singers like this today because they can't get through the system, which too often begins in the conservatories of music and then the business itself,,
Hands down the most electrifying version of this duet on Youtube! Traubel is glorious, Melchior even more heroic than usual, and the sound is so clear it might have been recorded last week. (Talk about wishful thinking that we had Wagnerians like these two nowadays!)
Helen Traubel and Lauritz Melchior were an incredible duo at the Met and, here, with Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. These are tantalizing glimpses of how wonderful Toscanini was when he conducted the music of Richard Wagner, since the Maestro never recorded a complete Wagner music drama in the U.S. (He did conduct "Meistersinger" in Salzburg and THAT was recorded.)
