  • So much bad luck and so many coincidences!

  • aww, I like Sam. She shouldn't have said that about him, that he was the only hope that she has. he seems really sweet even though he does not have much. He is the best choice for her so far. For starters.,, he is not a married man! haha

  • I minored in history and love English history. These stories are very accurate depoctions of Victorian England. Does anyone know when education became mandatory?

  • @glencora63 I know slavery was abolished in 1833 and compulsory education introduced in about 1870 or there abouts.Having moved to Canada I am learning a little about North American history - How can anyone not be interested in this subject!

  • What I don't understand is WHY people don't leave and come to America. I guess the brave ones did leave; our founders. The class system and lack of opportunity was so oppressive!

  • @glencora63 I'm not sure that people who left for the states had it any easier! Both my grandmothers were in service (worked for the big house) and my grandfathers working class, were treated well and they had good lives. They had cheap council houses rented to them, lived in a very small town and with the National Health Service had access to free doctors and very cheap medicine. Not all in the States is/was ideal and not all in England hard.

  • @glencora63 History 101...those "brave" ones who left to go to America were usually outlaws both economic, religious and political and on arrival proceeded to found the same caste / class system here that is personified by the still persistent north and south standoff. That is why you still have the insanely rich and immorally poor and the allusion to "old money"...as in those who by birthright belonged to the upper crust to which the rest of America still aspires, via hopefully the lottery!

  • My paternal Grandmother's parents and grandparents were from Co. Durham. So were all her great grandparents who would be born around 1800, were from Co. Durham... One, Joseph Carr was born 9 Apr 1815 in Chirton, North Shields, just like they mentioned here. What a thrill to think that of the experiences of my people in England.
