@15AaronMan after the impact with the spring massa was knocked unconscious and tried to brake to allay the impact with the tire wall. he couldn't let off of the throttle though.

@15AaronMan He was barely conscious, both his feet came to rest on both of the pedals. Hence, simultaneous throttle and brake. If this video included the onboard footage from immediately after he hit the wall you'd be able to hear that he's still on the throttle even after the car has stopped. He was, in short, in a bad way.

1 in a million crash.Definitely luck has betrayed him while in Hungary.Remember in 2008 when his engine blew up with 2 laps remaining while he was leading the race and that surely lost the championship for him,and a year later he gets hit by a small piece of metal that was flying from miles away and went straight into his head.

@machoman5001001 They do. The standards that Formula 1 helmets have to meet FAR exceed anything that road-motorbike or small-time motorsports helmets have to comply with. If he had have been wearing a low/mid range motorbike helmet for instance, its structure would have completely failed, and Feipe would have been decapitated. Even with the protection he had he was incredibly lucky to survive.

Of course they are tested, however this was a freak accident and no, it's not supposed to protect him against flying springs because that happens once in 150.000 sessions. If it wasn't for the new carbon fiber helmets, he would have been killed instantly. Helmet can only protect so much, it doesnt make you invincible.

@Tingawinga5 Actually the helmet itself is designed to withstand impacts and piercings of this nature, unluckily for Felipe the spring hit his visor which is the weakest part of the design, and not strong enough to protect from heavy impacts. After Felipe's accident, certain drivers have been testing helmet visors made from Zylon, a material similar to Kevlar which is used in bulletproof vests. It weighs a bit more, but is a lot stronger and safer.
