JODIJAY AND BOND, DO NOT FORGET ME HERE! rsrsrrss LOVE, LOVE THE BAND ELO! SINCE IT STARTED TO ITS END! I HAVE ALL THE BAND! THE BEST CHANCE TO SEE WHAT HAD BEEN THE BAND IN ARGENTINA! THIS BAND IS EVERLASTING, PIONEER! BEST band ever!
It was good to hear Jeff actually talking for once. I was wondering what his sense of humor was like. I thought he handled that reporter with his confrontational question rather well.
It's from the Montreux Pop Festival in 1986. All the acts mimed to their singles. It was pretty standard practice at that time for all televised music shows.
definitely not a live version. But: it was still a live concert. Hm... Only explanation: SOMEONE overdubbed this video with the studio version. Would love to hear the original audio of this video.
i dont know why i'm saying this but i'm going to anyway. i was on facebook the otherday and it said jeff was on there but i dont believe its him. all the info is right about him but i think he has other things to do then go on there
Also, I liked Lynne's music from Xanadu. He got to meet the hottest babe on the planet at the time and he took a gamble it could be a phenom like Grease. But you, smart dude law man lawyer, whatever, with your advantage of hindsight, pass almighty judgement. How insipid. When the Beatles did their dumb movies, everyone thought they were just great.
I don't think so. All your posts are rags on Lynne. Pathetic by the way. Also you act like all moves by Lynne should have been deeply weighed and calculated to reach optimal financial and career superstardom. What a joke and how foolish. Lynne was a creative artist. He probably liked Montreaux. I know he loves Switzerland. He wrote OOTB there. He hosted the festival too and it was on MTV, so it was a career risk too. The things you say make absolutely zero sense, period.
I love jeffs comments at the begining. They really were above this show and i was suprised when they turned up. I remember reading about how Jeff used to piss reporters off by refusing to do interviews. Go Jeff
This is mimed, not live. Talk about diluting ELO's legacy, Jeff....by 1986 you should have been way past miming anything live. Might as well be Milli Vanilli.
Your analysis of this situation is absurd. Lynne and Co. were consummate artists and musicians. SO many acts lip synched back then to avoid mistakes on TV. I could name about 30 I've seen including The Beatles. For you to be unaware of the reality that TV producers forced these guys to do this seriously injures your credibility.
Actually, your response is rather absurd. My point is that ELO's reputation was such by the end of their career that they didn't need to mime in any location and for any producer. Nobody forced Jeff to do anything. He agreed to mime and that is him diluting the band's legacy. Like turning down headlining Knebworth to do Xanadu? My God-what a mistake! I'm sure you'll defend him by saying he was "forced" by someone to make those equally disastrous mistakes.
I wouldn't say that Jeff made a wrong choice there either. Ok, the Xanadu movie flopped, but that soundtrack has made him millions, and is loved by fans .Never forget the music business is a BUSINESS, and Xanadu earned Jeff more money than he'd have got for Knebworth, and the Xanadu music is much more remembered than playing Knebworth would have been.
Also remember Jeff was bound by his contract to Jet Records, and Xanadu was one less album he needed to make...
As for credibility? Jeff was sick of ELO by the time BOP came out anyway.
And ELO used extensive tape backing on the OOTB tour - another reason Jeff was getting cheesed off with it all - it was impossible to produce that sound live - they needed tapes. Later albums were more simple in sound and more reliant on synths as synths developed. Jeff ( and the rest of ELO, such as it was at that time...) had nothing to prove by refusing to mime...
@rayfenwick Got to concur. More than half the ELO tracks on the Xanadu album were big hits on the charts in the USA. That, in and of itself, is amazing. The music was far better than the movie. Depending on how the folks who put the movie together set the deal up, the inestimable Mr. Lynne may have pulled their butts out of the fire.
That's just because they are so good live that they sound exactly the same. What most people realise is that everyone in elo is either a classical or jazz musician with perfect pitch, most of which are considered the best players of their respective instruments unless overshadowed by another member of elo. To not sound like the recorded version they would have to purposely stuff up, which is a low that elo refuses to stoop to.
Yes, and I remember that in protest of this Frankie Goes To Hollywood started smashing their equipment before their tape finished playing. Awesome! :-D
I watched this entire programm back in 1986 when it was aired and to be fair to ELO EVERY Other act there Mimed as well including Brian Wilson, but its always Jeff who gets the flak
Sorry this has been on before with nearly 6000 visits, my son acidentally erased it from youtube, apologies sent to those who favourited it, you can always make it your favourite again. Cheers, and Roy Wood's "Lion Heart" is now uploaded, shame its camcorder, but better than nothing.

It isnt live! nor was any of the other dozen or so acts who performed that night. It was a showcase not an actual concert

This should have been called the Montreux Music
Video Festival instead of The Montreux Rock
Festival. Every Group had to lip sync to their
songs for TV. ELO were hosts for the MTV's
coverage of The Montreux Rock Festival 1986.
