Some of the finest choral music in America came from the Shaw"s Chorale in the 50's and 60's. The men's sound in absolutely incredible. This came from an album of sea chanty's recorded in the 50's. Most of the arrangements on the album were by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, including this one. Find the song "Lowlands" from the same album if you'd like another spine-tingler.
Hi. Many thanks for coming back to me. Just to let you know, if the question would be asked of most English people, where would you like to visit? I would think over 50% would say America. Our 1st visit was to Nth & Sth Carolina & Georgia. We as tourists obviously visited the nicer parts,[ we as well as America do have deprived areas] Enjoyed Savannah & Charleston.New England ,beautiful !!.
A London dish would be Pie & Mash & liquor.Manzi`s,Tower Bridge Rd. Unique pies, Liquor= Parsley sauce.
We recorded this in 1975 (The Techmen from Virginia Tech) and sang it on a European tour. Great arrangement and nice video. Brings back great memories of my college days.
Thanks for posting, I can recall singing this in grade school. In the era of rock it seemed out of place for us. But now I appreciate the singing teacher who drilled us and formed the foundation of music appreciation. This song has some deep emotion that is pivotal in understanding the real majestic nature of music at its heart.
This is definitely the best version of this song (by far) that I have found so far; beautifully sung and I especially like the fact that they know how to properly pronounce "Missour-ah"!
Lovely video, great singing. Have been to America 6 times & have been made welcome every time. Loved every trip, been to most of the east coast also California. As an Englishman & a Londoner, I say god bless America. The people that say they hate America & Americans, don`t really, because they have probably never met Americans or been to the States, I would think they disagree with certain policies that America pursue.
@Teddyb1939 Thank you Teddy both me and my dad love the Brits. HA HA infact one of my friend's thinks I may be a closet Englishwoman!!! My love for your music, art, history, literature. We love Masterpiece Theatre!!! Can't wait to get to the English Restaurant near his home. Can't make up my mind either Fish/Chips(LOVE!!!) or maybe Shepherd's Pie(love). Malt Vinegar on the Chips and lemon on the fish. I agree with everything that you stated and the last part!!!
@Teddyb1939 and worked in the Timeshare business for 16 years loved meeting so many different people from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds. Especially when the English came in we would talk about food, (crumpets)and Masterpiece Theatre. Can't wait till Downton Abbey 2nd Series hits America!!! Just finished Larkrise to Candleford, Bummer that it finished on the 4th Series.
When this beautiful song was written, so much more of this country looked like the pictures in this video that it breaks my heart to know how much is gone. Beautiful version, perfect in tempo, feeling, everything..
Always count on the R.S.C. to deliver a quality product. Really nice images to go with the music but i got distracted by wondering what kind of transition was coming next. Pick a couple of related ones and stick with them.
Oh man, what a beautiful arrangement and performance! Robert Shaw Chorale never disappoints. And the pictures in video present a perfect setting for the song.
This song..this particular rendition; is the song that made me fall in love with vocal music. Thank you for posting this. Brings back great memories of Dad and the old 33's!
Our North Georgia chapter Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America sings an arrangement of this beautiful song by Joe Derosa. I haven't found a utube site for this - perhaps it will come to pass in the near future.
Many thanks for this fascinating song backed up by your beautiful pictures. Could you or anyone else kindly provide me with the lyrics of this song which is , I presume, an American folksong ? Regards
Nothing like the sound of a fine men's chorale...just outstanding!!

Chanticleer's version is almost as powerful, though they are a much smaller choral. Most of the weight in their version lies in the arrangement.

Miss those college chorus days with wonderful SATB singing, and the purity of a musical line....this brought me back....
