there are no gods and life is wonderful without them. no guilt no fear, just an amazing love for all around you and your loved ones. my wife and I and our two boys are all atheist (and yes I did let me boys chose for themselves unlike the religious who force their views upon their young) and we have a fantastic life. I feel sorry for those people who go each day racked with guilt #

The problem with atheism is the lack of knowledge and understanding of the HOLY BIBLE. Religion confused THE NATIONS! THE BIBLE is about whites, blacks, and, arabians; THE NATION that came from ABRAHAM. if you belong to these nationalities then YES you should be concerned! If God was to talk to THE NATION they would believe, but non-believers gotta know why He don't openly speak today; Why because His CHOSEN WAS afraid, so He talks openly with letters in the Bible.

A quick search on the Piraha clearly demonstrates that the idea that they don't believe in the supernatural is a misreading of their linguistic concept that things outside of their immediate frame of reference cease to exist (itself seeming to be a supernatural belief).

In the internet age, it is dangerous to use an inappropriate analogy...it's too easy for your audience to look it up and it changes a powerful argument to a weak one. I only looked it up BECAUSE it was such a strong example.

I have to say - I agree with this video. It makes perfect sense - Pity that religious people are too narrow minded to want to listen. Well they can continue to scare themselves for the rest of their lives as far I'm concerned. But it would be nice if they could wake up and start enjoying life for a change.

Actually, it's an ambiguous term, since Greek is not consistent with its head-directionality. The head of the word could be the "a-", as you suggest, or it could be "-ism". In the former case, Atheism is a kind of "lacking" - in the latter, it's a kind of "doctrine." If we use the English suffix -less instead of the Greek prefix a-, it's less ambiguous, since we can distinguish between "god-ism-less" and "god-less-ism"

The etymology you have quoted is out of context, it refers only to the early ancient Greek definition. Language like anything else evolves as society evolves, it is corrupted, but those corruptions are valid as it is the understanding at any given moment in time.

The world evolved meaning in 5th century BCE. Indeed in the 20th century it evolved to what has been defined here. Each generation owns it.

I now think it is incomplete to say that an atheist does not believe in deity/deities, as this ignores 'strong'-atheism. As vezrig said in these comments, "If we use the English suffix -less instead of the Greek prefix a-, it's less ambiguous, since we can distinguish between "god-ism-less" and "god-less-ism." I have thus decided to utilize godless, as it removes any doubt about weak/strong. Plus, it evokes a harsher response.

I'm not anti anything. I simply relate to people and the environment, I am aware that anything else is my projection and I prefer to put that to better use than being anti people, stupid monkeys, cows or pot plants.

The difference between 'weak' and 'strong' atheism is important to know. A lack of belief in god(s) - weak atheism / god-ism-less - is a vacuous stance. It's like baldness describing what kind of hair you have: none. A belief that there is no god(s) - strong atheism / god-less-ism - is an positive assertion. Thus, a person taking this position shoulders a burden of proof.

I don't mean to come across as a now-it-all; I just came to understand this discrepancy recently.

I have no issue with what individuals "believe". If the meaning of atheism is to be redefined into non theist then what "word" would be appropriately descriptive as a label for the likes of myself???

Atheism has been redefined in the past few decades as either weak- or strong-atheism, as the single term no longer sufficed for both labels. Check it on wikipedia; they can explain it more words.

I define anti-theism as someone who is specifically against theism. An atheist doesn't necessarily have to be anti- anything; they can just keep it to themselves.

A weak-atheist is a non-theist, just as a square is a rectangle - a non-theist could still be a deist.

@BigTopBrain I think I am just going to give up on labels completely, i only use them for the purposes of communicating with those who "believe" they are important and live by them, afraid they will not exist without them. But if everyone has their own perception of meaning it makes their use irrelevant, and as I consider them to be exactly that it would suggest the necessary melt down of labels having any validity is underway.
